Waihi Beach-Island View Reserve

Waihi Beach holds a special place in our hearts—it’s close enough to home for a quick getaway but far enough to feel like a true holiday. This time, we brought Emily, our 9-year-old granddaughter (technically MY step-granddaughter, if we’re being precise).

After arriving and easily finding a park, we set up camp, enjoyed lunch, and set off on a bike ride into the village. Taking back roads and winding through a couple of reserves, it was a scenic ride. I couldn’t resist stopping at two second-hand shops along the way, dragging Emily in with me. Her lack of enthusiasm made it clear—Ems is not an op-shopper.

Our next bike adventure took us to the Coombridge bach to visit friends Bev and Rodney. We spent a lovely afternoon soaking up the sun and catching up before heading back to the motorhome. Emily was quick to change into her togs, ready for some beach fun. We grabbed our metal detectors—dubbed "The Turner Treasure Hunters"—and headed to the surf. While the dogs and Emily had a fantastic swim, our treasure hunt didn’t yield much more than sand and shells. Still, the thrill of the hunt and the joy of being together made it worthwhile.

Back at the campsite, dinner was followed by a visit from a young boy who came over to meet the dogs. He and Emily hit it off immediately, spending the evening playing at the playground, attempting a board game, and having fun with the dogs. By bedtime, Emily was ready to settle in. She watched a bit of TV in our bed before climbing up to the Luton. Marley, however, wasn’t keen to stay with her, so both dogs ended up in our bed for the night.
