    Tokyo - day 5

    Monster street, godzilla store and Shinjuku.
    Monster street is a short street with 11 little raccoon dog statues that have different purposes. Like the saints (lost causes, travel, lost items). There was a raccoon for passing tests, good fortune, family issues, etc. Each was outfitted to match is cause. Sorry no pictures
    We had a really good lunch at a small place that specialized in grilled eel.
    We then worked our way to Shinjuku to find the godzilla store. It was a small corner of a department store but it was packed full of everything godzilla. I really like the action figures that were based on the different godzillas and his adversaries over the years. I wish I could have taken home all of them. Found a cool 3rd floor tiny bar for a cocktail before doing an evening walking tour which was a little different than we expected but we were able to see the Golden Gai bars, Godzilla Rd., the red light district and a couple of shrines. Other stuff too but you'll have to ask. Walked around a little found a dinner spot then headed back.    Leggi altro

    Tokyo - day 6, videos, lights and food

    Out of the house by 9 we had tickets for team labs Bordeless. Amazing technology. Tens of rooms of interactive light shows. There were mirrors, lights, 3D objects, hidden rooms. It was a maze of things to see. We were so lost. The rooms change too. So we didn't even know if we were in the same room twice.
    Lunch at a Whole Food- type market, then we walked and found a nice little park where there was a community picnic sponsored by Suntory to promote their new N/A drinks. After we walked and people watched until dinner. Well I did find a pair of Japanese denim pants that fit .... well not like a glove.
    Dinner at an A5 snow beef restaurant recommended by Angelo. We opted for the chef's menu and weren't disappointed. Every course was delish. They even took our photo, signed it and put it in a frame.
    Then went to the government building to see the light show. Amazing and free. Kind of like the SF Christmas one on steroids.
    Quick stop at our local bar for a Manhattan then home.
    Our 2nd to last day was a success.    Leggi altro

    Tokyo - day 7 - back to nature Mt. Fuji

    Decided to spend or last day out of the city proper. We took an hour train ride to Mt. Takoa. Hiking, chair lift, tram, good snacks and great views. Even the real MT. Fuji. Actually, we knew where it was supposed to be so I took a close up photo but couldn't make it out through the clouds... until I looked at the photo. It was right in front of our eyes. It was magnificent.
    Beautiful forests, wildlife and great weather made for a wonderful day with the realization that we are going home tomorrow. We're ready but going to miss japan.
    We made it back to the hotel to relax a bit pack and head out for our last night.
    Enjoyed a delicious dinner at a small place nearby. We had brought a bottle of angel's envy and finally found the place to share it. The cook and a patron really appreciated it. Then we went to the cook's wife bar for a final cocktail. She is Peruvian. We had a nice time.
    Final stop at Family Mart for desert then home. Mary beat me at cards again and in bed by 1. Wonderful final day.    Leggi altro

    Sayonara Japan

    It's been a unforgettable 4 weeks. I say that now but I'm old so if you have questions ask in the next couple of days.
    Mary found a shuttle bus that was beefy enough to handle our luggage. We got to the airport early, locked up our luggage and took the train into the town of Narita. Wandered the main street and had a delicious lunch. It started to rain so we cut our visit a little short and headed back to the airport to spend our last few Yen. Loaded up on candy and cookies, and relaxed in front of a beer to wait for our takeoff. We're expecting a pleasant but slightly delayed flight bringing us to SF around 4pm.
    We'll be happy to be home.    Leggi altro
