  • Cayó Iguana

    19 de junho de 2018, Cuba ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We then head back towards the Cayo Largo area. Ben, Joss and myself decide to take the kayaks to the nearby Iguana Island, a very small low-lying island. We land on the island and immediately come face to face with some very big iguanas. They are all coming towards us, but we manage to avoid them. It turns out that other boats land here with tourists, who feed the iguanas, causing them to expect it now unfortunately. We manage to walk around a bit, before another sailing boat arrives, and a big crowd of day trippers wade to the island. Time to leave. We kayak around the island and head back to where the Neptune left us.

We find the catamaran beached on another Island's beach, where we join the rest of the group spending the afternoon in the shallow water playing volleyball, dancing and having cocktails with our Iguana friends. Later we leave the shore and go further out to anchor for the night.

  • Kayaking to Cayó Rico

    20 de junho de 2018, Cuba ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

After breakfast we sailed westward for a short time, we were heading for Cayo Rico. Half way there we tried something new and dropped the kayaks in the natural pools and eight of us paddled our way over three miles to Cayo Rico.

What an experience! We saw nurse sharks, Osprey, Black Hawks, Stingrays, not to mention the beautiful scenery and water. Most of the way the water was barely knee deep, despite us being a fair bit offshore. Occasionally it was so shallow the kayaks would run aground, and we had to walk. At one point we saw a nurse shark, that went under our kayak, and we felt it striking the underside. A truely amazing experience.

  • Cayó Rico

    20 de junho de 2018, Cuba ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Once we landed at Cayo Rico, the rest of the tour group were already there, we had lunch in the open air café. As with many places we'd visited on the Canarreos Archipelago, this place was deserted apart from the two café workers. Then we hung out with the Iguanas & Jutias before swimming in the beautifully warm waters.Leia mais

  • Coral Gardens

    20 de junho de 2018, Cuba ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

In the afternoon we kayaked back to the Neptune, spotting a stingray on the way. We again set sail to the east, heading for Cayo Largo, stopping for a short while at the Coral Gardens.

Here we went snorkeling and the crew went hunting for food. Eduardo who was using a speargun managed to get several fish, however, one on them had darted into some coral just as he fired at it. He got the fish, but the spear got lodged inside the coral. Eventually he had to cut it from the rope and leave it. He wasn't happy.Leia mais

  • White Wednesday Party - Cayó Largó

    20 de junho de 2018, Cuba ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Then in the evening we docked in the marina of Cayo Largo and after sundown we all tried our dance moves at the “White Wednesday” party..

This was an open air nightclub, with only the dance floor covered with a thatched roof. It was the Cayó Largó event of the week, as all the workers and tourists congregated here. It was pretty normal to take your own bottle of rum to the party, as did the captain when he plonked the bottle on the floor in the middle of our group and said drink. 😜

The funniest event of the night had to be when a red crab 🦀 walked across the middle of the dance floor and nobody thought it was unusual. 😂🤣

  • Freedom for Leonardo

    21 de junho de 2018, Cuba ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

After breakfast, we revisited the Turtle Rescue Centre, because today we were going to do something very special, releasing the 1.5 year old green turtle "Leonardo" out onto the reef.

It was an emotional moment when Leonardo the man, who had raised him, said his goodbyes to Leonardo the turtle.

We sailed a short distance to a nearby reef, and gathered in the water, as Allan released him. We followed him for 30 minutes and he was already eating after that time – amazing!

  • Playa Paraíso

    21 de junho de 2018, Cuba ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

After releasing Leonardo, we travel a short distance, anchoring offshore and taking the zodiac ashore to a beautiful beach. This is Paradise Beach, one of the main beaches on Cayó Largó, and unusually for us there's a few people here.

We relax here for a while, before Eduardo and the rest of the crew come ashore for a BBQ picnic, grilled chicken on the beach yum yum.

After returning to the Neptune and just before we leave, most of us decide to continuously jump off the roof of the cabin into the water. I think the people on the beach enjoyed it as several are seen waving.

We went into the beautiful city of Cienfuegos and visited the UNESCO World Heritage site of the central park Jose Marti. In the evening, we had a musical surprise visit by Luisito’s live music on the boat. After a delicious final dinner of fresh lobster and fish we caught ourselves, we danced the evening away at the local disco.Leia mais

  • Schiphol

    24 de junho de 2018, Países Baixos ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

I managed to sleep on the 9 hour plane from Havana to Amsterdam, but the seats were very uncomfortable, no padding, so I was always waking up to shift position, plus we only got 3.5 hours sleep on the friday night.

So by Amsterdam I was shattered, and had 8 hours until the flight to Aberdeen. So found out they have a Yotel, which is a very small room hotel in Lounge 2 of Schiphol. I could get it for 4 hours, it had a bed, TV, power sockets, toilet and shower in a very small space. I felt great after the 4 hours. Will do that again if I have a long flight somewhere. I also went for a 40 minute full massage too, soooooo good 😄
