  • Nomad Camp

We continue on and go around the end of the high dunes, which are 25 km long by about 5 km wide. We go east onto a huge windswept plain, only 7km from the Algerian border, and visit one of the nomad families. There are many other nomad family tents dotted around, all well spaced. They have about ten tents circled around which are the kitchen, bedrooms, larder, toilet, playroom for the kids and dining open sided tent.
They are very welcoming giving us some tea and their Moroccan pizza equivalent. Little three year old Omar is a character and we meet six month old Smile as well.
We give them some spare clothes and food.

On our way back to our Kasbah hotel we visit a small Kasbah and listen to some music by the 'Groupe Deg Bambarag' in Dar Gnawa.
The village of Khamlia is located in the South East of Morocco. It lies in the shadow of the Great Erg Chebbi Dune. For more than a century it has been inhabited by a mixture Of Berber, Arabs and different tribes of Sub Saharan origin. In Khamlia the best known of these tribes is the Bambara. Bambara are also called Gnawa as they are descendants of slaves originating from Black Africa.

  • Todra Gorge

We leave the desert Kasbah and travel south. After a long journey we have a short stop in a small village synonymous with dates, and buy some, after sampling a few 😋.
We continue our journey west, only with a stop for lunch, to the start of the Todra Gorge.
It's a wide expanse of green oasis following the river and edged by a lot of old and new kasbahs.
After stopping at the viewpoint it's a very short distance to our hotel for the night.

  • Todra Gorge Walk

After a short rest at the hotel a few of us cross the little stream for a walk in the gorge.
Almost immediately we spot wild mountain goats perched precariously on the cliffside. Once we tune our eyes to their shape and colour we spot a lot more.
We continue along the gorge where it opens up a little, and the valley bottom is covered in little allotments, all very fertile. We even spot a guy at the top of a palm tree collecting dates, not for the squeamish.
It was a lovely walk in a nice comfortable temperature.

  • Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex

As we go along the road we spot a very bright object that appears to be on top of a tower. At first I thought it was a flare tower, but as we get closer we see it's the reception tower for a solar farm.
It's Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex in Morocco, the World's Largest Concentrated Solar Power Plant. The Noor Ouarzazate Solar Complex is a 580MW solar power project located 10 kilometers north of the Moroccan city of Ouarzazate. The rays from the panels to the tower can clearly be seen.

  • Kasbah Taourirt

As we enter Ouarzazate, a small town at the crossroads of the Drâa, Dadés and Ziz valleys, we stop at Kasbah Taourirt. Kasbah Taourirt is one of the most impressive of its kind in Morocco. Built in the 17th century it's a labyrinth of passages and rooms inside. There were approximately 300 rooms in the Kasbah originally and was the largest Kasbah in Morocco.
We should have toured it but unfortunately the site was damaged by the September 2023 earthquake that struck southern Morocco. An early assessment of damage reported cracks and partial collapses in the building and the surrounding historic quarter, with risk of further collapses.

  • Aït Benhaddou

We finally get to our hotel for the night in Aït Benhaddou. The new part where we stay is across the river from the old Kasbah which is built around a hill.
I walk back to the entrance of the town where there's an elevated view of the Old Kasbah. Whilst there I spot what turns out to be Moroccan Squirrels darting into their burrows in the cliffside.

  • Ksar Aït Benhaddou

Aït Benhaddou is a historic Ksar (fortified village) along the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakesh in Morocco. It is considered a great example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
We are told that the Ksar sustained some damage from the recent earthquake and to enter the walls are our own risk. So I go in carefully. The streets are fairly narrow, but because I want to reach the hill top I start climbing steps. Eventually these go under buildings, so I tread carefully and quickly. I get to the top and see the damaged remains of the grain store, located here to protect against enemies. It's surrounded by red and white tape.
From the top I get a great view across to the new town and surrounding countryside.
I make my way down again, this time down a different route. Again I come across red and white tape and see leaning walls supported by a tree trunk and elsewhere a pile of a fallen wall.

  • Le Jardin Secret

As we wander through the Medina we enter an innocuous doorway and behind it is two wonderfully peaceful gardens.
The focal points of Le Jardin Secret are its green spaces, today divided between the exotic garden and the Islamic garden. The exotic garden is home to plants that are rare in
northern Africa and come from various parts of the world, recalling the search for universality and the experimental nature of the great gardens of Marrakech.
Le Jardin Secret's Islamic garden, on the other hand, offers a reconstruction of what the garden might have looked like in the 19th century. Closely connected to the
buildings of the riad - to the point that it cannot be said with any certainty whether the garden was an essential part of the palace or vice versa - this type of the garden was an oasis of peace, a place to shelter from the heat and the chaos of the city.

  • Jardin Majorelle

Several of our group mentioned these gardens so I made a last minute decision to visit them. You have to book it online with a time to attend, I guess so they don't get overly busy.
They are very neatly laid out gardens with sections of varieties. It was a paradise for Instagrammers and selfie people, which meant you had to wait a few minutes to continue on the walkways until they got their ideal shot out of dozens 😂.

  • Jardin Majorelle

The Garden, which extends over 9000 m2 today, is one of the most enchanting and mystical gardens in Morocco. Created over the space of forty years, the complex, surrounded by walls, consists of a labyrinth of intersecting alleys, intertwining levels and Moorish Art Deco buildings in bold colors. The garden is a gigantic and opulent collection of exotic plants and trees from the most distant lands, designed as both a sanctuary and a laboratory by the French painter Jacques Majorelle from 1922.

In 1980, Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, who discovered Morocco in 1966, bought the Garden to save it from a hotel complex project which envisaged its destruction.

  • Sunset Balloon Ride

An extremely early start (5am 😭) to the final day on the tour, and the final activity.
Four of us from the tour get picked up and drive northeast from Marrakech for about 40 minutes. After some coffee, cake and a briefing they start inflating the three balloons. Firstly with big fans to get volume in the balloon, then using the burner to get lift. As the balloon part lifts off the ground, it rotates the large basket onto its base.
