    Day 10

    April 30, 2023 in Iceland ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

Half day in Reykjavik! We spent it wandering along the waterfront and then checking out some shops before enjoying one last beer.

What we learned from our 10 days living in a camper van in Iceland:
    • Buying your alcohol at the duty free is worth it to avoid pub/restaurant prices ($14-$20 per pint for a beer). 80% of the price of alcohol is tax!
•Viking Brewery - Bondi Session IPA is honestly the best - something we wish we could import
    • If you do want to go out for a drink, look for happy hours, drinks are typically are 50% off
    • Campsites were between $35-50 per night (for 2 people). All charged extra for washer/dryer facilities and some charged extra for showers.
    • Netto was the best discount grocer in our opinion - good discount and quality/variety
    • Don’t bother with bottled water, all water sources including glacier rivers are safe to drink from
    • Local pools are a great spot for a hot tub soak and shower at a reasonable price ($10)
    • If you have the time, the scenic routes are worth it (driving through the east fjords and Trollaskagi peninsula)
    • The shoulder season is ideal - drastically less busy destinations
    • Pack for changing weather especially wind (a toque, sunglasses and layers are ideal)
    • Don’t be afraid to pack light. There are washer and dryer options at the majority of campgrounds
    • Cash was minimally needed here. Other than 1 campground, a horseback riding tour and washing machine, we used cards. A couple hundred dollars in cash is likely fine.
    • The majority of Icelanders spoke English
    • It is worth looking into the folklore and history of the different regions you are in
    • Signing up for a glacier tour is highly recommended
