In 31 BC, Octavian defeated the navy of Antony/Cleopatra at Actium. In 2024 AD, I drove through.
Nothing remains of the battle - it was at sea. But Octavian founded the city of Nicopolis here afterwards (literally "victory city"). The walls are still visible and have been restored slightly. Pictured is the west gate, leading down to the old city's port.
I then visited the city's old Roman theater built into a nearby hill.
I also found China Mall - a huge warehouse selling plastic stuff/electronics/clothes. The Chinese lady staffing it spoke a little Greek (no English) and said she had been here for 10 years.Læs mere
