• Day 44, We got robbed

    February 16 in Bolivia ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

The busride felt quite short because we slept quite a lot. The bus was also 45 minutes early. The hotel vas only an 18 minutes walk away, so we decided to walk instead of taking a taxi that would charge us too much. That was a bad idea. We were walking for about 5 minutes when a woman came to us, asking for directions. A car stopped and a guy said he was police and showed us a badge. He looked at our passports and let us walk again. 2 minutes later another guy asked us for directions, and again the police guy showed up. He wanted to check our bags for drugs and got a taxi saying he was intelligence and showed the taxi his badge. We had to go to the police station he said. The guy who asked us directions also had to come with us. The taxi stopped somewhere and the guy had to give his bag to the police guy to get it searched. Then eike had to give his bag. Nina started asking a bit pissed why we didn't go to the police station. It was because the other guy was in a hurry he said. The police guy smelled everything and kept asking if we had more money in our bags. We lied and said no. Then everything was ok he said, and let us out of the taxi. The taxi then quickly drove off. Since everything was really fishy and weird, we checked if we still had everything. Eikes money was gone (about 100 euro) and it seemed ninas wallet was gone too, but luckily we found it later. Later eike also found out that his rain jacket was missing (sounds weird, but in the next pinguin of today it becomes clear why). It could have gone a lot worse, and they could have taken everything. Luckily our passports, bank cards, cameras and ipad were still there. We feel really really stupid we stepped into this trap, because we both knew it was wrong what was happening, but we also know that they were with four people and they could have knives or something. We walked away unharmed but 100 euro and a rain jacket lighter.Read more
