Day 44, part 2, Carnaval 💜💚☠️
February 16 in Bolivia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C
After a very bad start of the day, things only got better 😊 we started walking to the hotel again, and a big dog started following us. He made us feel a bit safe again ❤️ we arrived at the hotel and we had a rest. Carnaval is starting today, with a childrens thing at 09:00, and a grownup thing at 12:00. We don't know what is actually happening today though 🤭
So, after some rest it was time to go outside. About every 20 meters there are people selling filled water balloons. 6 in a bag for 2 bolivianos (0,25 euro). They also sell spray cans with foam. Hmmm... what does this mean? 🤔 every now and then we got sprayed on with water from cars, and some people sprayed foam on us. we saw many groups of people wearing the same tshirts and accopanied by big fanfare bands. We thought there would be a parade so we walked to the main square, but that was closed off for cars and and it was super empty. We got us some breakfast and went on our way again. Then the fun really started! Water balloons were flying everywhere and we decided to follow one group with band. At some places people were throwing buckets full of water over the group and water fights started to happen. Nobody is safe, and water can come from any direction. There are people on roofs and balconies, inside cars, on top of cars, everywhere! So to not just be targets, we got ourselves some balloons and a spray can and started joining the party! 🥳 it seems like a few blocks of houses have their own group, wearing their colors and waving their flags. Every group also has a marching band. They walk around and go into other groups blocks, where water fights then errupt.
We left the group we were following, stocked up on our balloons, and went looking around. We found a perfect group, called Nina Ninas, who were wearing purple and green shirts, with bones and skulls 💜💚☠️ perfect! So the rest of the day we stayed with them and had a lot of fun dancing and throwing and receiving water balloons. We were completely, completely soaked, and when it got a little bit colder around 19:00, we went to the hotel to put on some dry clothes. Here we realised why the fake cop stole Eikes rain jacket, and we also know why.
Back on the street it was dark and the water fights just kept on going, so we got some rain ponchos. We found the Nina Ninas again and partied with them untill about 01:00. They kept feeding us booze, and we went very drunk to bed.Read more
