Day 48, last day in Sucre
February 23 in Chile ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C
Our hangover was over, but we had to wake up early to pick up our laundary. It was all fresh and folded neatly 😊 We packed our bags, ate the rest of the pizza for breakfast and checked out of this lovely place. We could leave our bags, which was nice because our bus to Uyuni leaves at 22:00. We had a coffee and went on our way to the 'secret catacombs'.
The museum was hard to find because there were no signs, but we did find it by just walking into an open door 🤭 We could only access the catacombs with a tour, and we also had to go to the communication museum upstairs. Two more people walked in who also came for the catacombs and went with us. It was a mother of 63 and her son. The woman who gave the tour was extremely enthousiastic and happy to tell us some really dry facts about news paper printers, typewriters, radios, record players, movie projectors, and -cameras, photo cameras, and mobile phones. Then we finally went downstairs. The building is an old theatre and is still in use for that. It was a nice theatre. The mother who was with us in the tour took her phone out and showed us some pictures from when she was 17 and was 'military queen' or something, and all dressed up on that same stage. They renovated it not so long ago, and with these renovations they found the catacombs. The entrance was under the backstage under the stage. We had to wear a helmet and crawled down. There were small ways with gaps in the walls where human bones were lying. Not one skeletton was complete, and in one of the gaps they had a spine with shoulder blades, but also shoulder blades where the pelvis should be... Not very respectful, but ok. There was also a small room with a bed, a chair and kitchen ware. The lady said one theory is that a janitor lived there, but why would anyone live down there with no windows? Doesn't make sense. We bet on an illegal prison cell. It also looked like the catacombs were not dug out properly, because some brick arches showed that it goes further under ground. And yes, that was also what the lady said later. We came to the last room, and there were a few mummies in glass boxes. They were not that old (only 2 or 3 centuries), and not found under the theatre, but somewhere else.
After the museum tour we sat in the park. Then we went to the next park, walked the wrong way somewhere, and got some food. We went to the main square, ate some ice cream, and walked over the market in search of choclo what we didn't find. It was quite hard to pass the time, while waiting to go to bus. We went to the hotel where we sat a bit in the garden and wrote some penguins. Then it was finally time to go to the busstation! We wanted to go when it was still light, so we would not be targets for muggers. At the station we waited some more, untill we finally could step into the bus.Read more
