    Cania Gorge

    We completed another couple of walks in the bush, this time taking in the Two Storey Cave followed by a trek to the Overhang and Dripping Rock. These walks were through the dry rain forest and we enjoyed them greatly. The paths took us upwards into the gorge on both sides side of the valley.

    Cania Gorge

    Today we took the car out for a drive up to the Cania lake where we had a quick stop at the lookout. The lake is a man made affair with a dam constructed to hold the waters which cover the old town of Cania. Cania was founded on the back of a gold rush which followed the find of gold in the hills by a man called "Greasy Peter". The lake is stocked with fish every year and to encourage people to fish the waters people with boats are invited to the big fishing competition which takes place every March. One of the prizes is a new boat. Aside from the main event ,apparently one Barramundi has been tagged in the lake and whenever it gets caught the tag will earn the angler a $10000 prize. There was one boat on the lake trying while we were there.
    After the lake visit we drove a short distance to walk up to the old mine workings at Shamrock Mines. According to the local information board one lucky man found a nugget weighing in at 96 ounces (3.2kg) and there was a picture of him looking very pleased with himself wearing a very dapper three piece suit, presumably taken after he cashed in. The mine workings were up the hill side, and the walk took us past the spoil heaps where gold had been sifted. The local ant population took a particular liking to Karen's feet.
    We then drove into the local town of Monto and enjoyed a nice meal at the bar of The Albert Hotel. A couple of local workmen were in the bar knocking back the beer - archetypal aussies with deep deep voices, and one with a long unkempt beard, could have come straight out of the movies. On our way back to the car we were accosted by a wino with a broad Yorkshire accent, turns out he was from Doncaster and claimed to be a Falkand war veteran. He wasn't best mates with Margaret Thatcher apparently. If it is true about the Falkands then respect to him, he is now clearly spending his pension on beer and annoying visitors. He did however tell us about a local farm stall where we could buy local produce which we took note of.
    In the evening we were joined at our trailer by some of the local king parrot population.

    Cania Gorge

    We completed our first bush walk from the site today which was to look at some ancient aboriginal art called the Big Foot painted in a rocky outcrop near the site. We then ventured on the trail up to Fern Tree pond before taking in the lookout at the top of the gorge. As usual we were walking in late morning and early afternoon but cloudy weather prevented us from overheating. We got back to the site in time for a swim in the pool (Karen) and to watch the site management feed the birds which they do at 4pm every day. Cockatoo ruled the roost that afternoon in light rain.

    Cania Gorge

    Tuesday was a travelling day. We arose quite early and set off into the country to Cania Gorge National Park where we had booked ourselves into a site for five nights. Renee's parents had stayed here quite recently and enjoyed the bush walking that the area had to offer.
    We passed through rich farmland (and an area delightfully called Litttle Wonga) rising steadily into the hills past lonely homesteads and small farming communities eventually stopping off at Gayndah which claims to be the oldest town in Queensland where we found an open bakery who made us a very nice chicken and cheese roll consumed in the air conditioning of our car.
    We continued on into the area known as Three Moons before arriving at the gorge in early afternoon.
    This place grew on us as we passed our time here. The bird life is incredible with cockatoo, laughing kookaburra, king parrot, currawah, lorikeet, raven amongst a host of others all adding to the noise in the forest canopy. The screech of the cockatoo outdoing the ka ka ka of the kookaburra by some mile in the decibel stakes.    Weiterlesen

    Habitat Noosa

    Jamie and family left us on Sunday as they needed to be back at work and school. We stayed on for a couple of days to further enjoy the area. The site emptied quite considerably on the Sunday and the kangaroos came into the camp in greater numbers as families left the site.
    In the afternoon we completed a short bush walk through to Mill Point, the site of an old saw mill which was located here to service the timber industry at the time this area was being cleared for farmland. The local authorities are now re naturalising the area as much as reasonably possible with the emphasis on restoring the natural habitat. A couple of noisy cicada jumped out of a nearby tree to give us a glimpse of something we usually hear but do not see.
    On Monday we drove round to Noosa Heads once again so we could complete one of our favorite walks which is the coast path to Boiling Point followed by the Tanglewood path back through the rain forest. No Koala to be seen or heard this time. After our walk we spent some time on the beach and in the surf in glorious sunshine.    Weiterlesen

    Habitat Noosa

    Its always a joy to come here - the Habitat Noosa site is adjacent to an inland sea water lake with very safe swimming for the girls in warm waters. The site itself is surrounded by woodland in which hoards of kangaroos live, coming out in the daytime and evening when the sun drops a bit in the sky. We camped in The Gums and soon we had the trailer setup and all Jamie's tents and gazebos set up for the stay. There were kangaroos aplenty in the overflow camping fields and we were surrounded by the rich bird life once again.
    The new gas bbq was put to immediate use and we all enjoyed a chicken dinner.
    After nightfall the kangaroos venture into the park in great numbers and it was nice to casually walk past one or two of them as we walked through to the shower blocks each evening. At night we could hear them munching the grass immediately outside our tent.
    On Saturday we drove off site to visit the Beach at Noosa Heads. It was a baking hot day and we found some respite from the sun at the top of the beach under the tree canopy. Crossing the sand into the surf had to be a quick job to stop our feet from burning but the sea was warm and the surf most enjoyable. The girls stayed in the sea for ages with their body boards enjoying the waves.    Weiterlesen

    Eatons Hill

    We enjoyed more family time with Jamie and the girls. Jamie prepared a great spicy noodle dish one night and the following day we bought a big snapper from the local fishmonger and cooked it on the bbq in a spicy sauce - very nice. The three girls are great fun and the two bigger ones are great sisters to little Summer, who is quite a character. Sophie managed an aerial jump for the first time in the garden which she was pleased about, and it was fun watching Summer trying to emulate her not quite managing to do a full roly-poly.
    On Thursday, Karen's birthday, we prepped up for a road trip. Jamie and Renee had bought Karen a bbq for the trailer and a battery fan/light for warm evenings we were hoping to experience. We did food shopping in the morning and reacquainted ourselves fully with our camper trailer in the afternoon. We were all excited about a trip with Jamie to the Everglades Ecocamp site at Noosa where we had booked in for the weekend.
    In the evening sunshine we enjoyed ourselves in the pool with the girls.    Weiterlesen

    Brisbane

    We spent a lazy day unwinding the jet lag then took ourselves off in the Nissan for some essential shopping. Spotlight (the fabric/craft shop for Karen) and K Mart for some cheap togs.
    On Tuesday we planned our first trip of the visit which will be to Noosa Heads with Jamie and Family for the coming weekend, followed by us extending the trip to look at Cania Gorge Nature reserve and Rainbow beach - all with our camper trailer which we are looking forward to reacquainting ourselves with.
    After that we went into the hinterland with Jamie to have a walk around the rain forest at Mount Glorious. The forest lived up to its name - quite glorious and very wet - although we took cover from the rain under the canopy.
    We had our first encounter with the noises in the rain forest - the Whip Birds etc and all three of us were made friends of by the local leech population. Band aids were necessary upon our return to Brizzie which we managed in time to pick up Sophie and Sammy from school and later Summer from day care.    Weiterlesen

    North Baddesley/Brisbane

    With less than 48 hours to our flight we got up early to visit the covid testing station at Eastleigh Football Club ground for our fit for flight PCR test. In early afternoon we dropped the car off at Jo and Syd's who are kindly storing it for us when we are away, followed by a nice walk back to our site at North Baddesley.
    The following day we took the van to the storage depot in Netley and Syd kindly ran us up to our hotel at Heathrow.
    At 4pm we got the results from the PCR tests (huge relief to see a negative result) and our certificates to travel - great - we are now fit to head off at last !!
    With a bright and early start we took an uber at 5am into Terminal 5 ready to join our flight on Qatar airways. The check in provided the most anxious moment as the Australian Embassy was consulted to confirm that all our paperwork was in place. 24 hours later, after a seamless transfer at Doha we arrived in Brizzie in the early evening to be welcomed by Jamie, Samantha and Summer. We were one of the first off the plane to get through immigration so the arrival at Brisbane was quick and easy.
    A couple of beers and a bottle of fizz were opened to celebrate our arrival. Jamie did a quick bbq too. All three girls were delightful as usual and Summer was quick to welcome granny and grandpa.
    The following day was a lazy day to try to unwind the jet lag and on Sunday we visited Redcliffe to peruse the market and enjoy a family meal at The Komo - the seafood platter there seldom disappoints.    Weiterlesen

    North Baddesley

    We are back in the van today after a few weeks in our house prior to its sale. Weeks which were not without stress, due to the conveyancing system in England.
    Ours was a straight forward sale with a very small chain, but in the end we were one day away from putting the property back on the rental market. It was a great relief to exchange contracts ten days ago and complete this morning.
    We have seen some houses for sale in Chandlers Ford but will now step up our search for a new place near all our friends.
    We had a fairly hectic last week prior to the completion of the sale. We enjoyed a lovely evening with all our neighbours over a bottle of wine or two in front of our log burner, followed by an evening at Ruta and Trevor's house with the Bitch and Stitch group.
    On Wednesday two men and a van turned up to take our heavier kitchen equipment and our remaining stuff to a secure store at Dummer.
    Thursday was spent cleaning the house prior to exchange, thanks once again to Syd and Jo for their assistance with our vehicle movements.
    On Friday Karen stopped by the supermarket to buy a bottle of champers and we enjoyed a wonderful evening at Syd and Jo's (Thai curry outstanding) - many thanks for a great night.
    We are now self isolating at Body Farm to make sure we are covid free prior to our flight to Brisbane on 10th Feb    Weiterlesen
