    Eatons Hill

    Tuesday saw us visit the local supermarkets to stock up for our trip to Stanthorpe. We ran the trailer into the manufacturer in the morning to have a small repair done - brilliant service once again. The repair was completed by the afternoon so we picked it up on our way to meet with friends for an evening meal in Redcliffe.
    Bronwyn and Frank our friends whom we met in Sydney two years ago were in the area as they were picking up a new 4x4 motorhome. They had sold off their Autotrail Delaware for a more rugged unit which could take them off the tarmac.
    We met them at a very busy Rustic Olive and enjoyed a good catch up. They, at one point, were travelling around Western Australia in the Delaware when the state borders were closed due to covid. We recounted our experiences in
    the UK over the same period. We had a quick look at their shiny new motorhome as we left and promised we would meet again either in Europe or Australia.    Baca lagi

    Eatons Hill

    Easter Sunday we were all invited to spend the afternoon with Renee's parents at Boondall. Mark and Cailtlin came over with their girls from the Gold Coast and we all enjoyed a lovely afternoon with a glass of beer or wine.
    All the girls really enjoyed the Easter egg hunt through the house and the garden. The adults has Antonella's Lasagne to look forward to, which was followed by a magnificent Easter egg chocolate cake made by Renee.
    On Easter Monday we drove to the beach at Nudgee to enjoy a picnic in the shade. of the ocean side trees.
    In the evening Jamie made some pizza to round off the Easer weekend.    Baca lagi

    Eatons Hill

    We had a great trip back south to Brisbane, passing through the Tropic once more. The roads were really quiet and the route via Biggenden really beautiful. We stopped at Biggenden for a sandwich at the Bakery. We would classify Biggenden as a one horse town, although that's being generous, however its main purpose is to serve the cattle farming community which surrounds it. The only real traffic we encountered was for a short period around Gympie and the stretch around Caboolture.
    We arrived back at EH at 16:30pm having left at 8:00am.
    On Wednesday we were up early once again for a visit to the Logan Hospital fracture clinic. Karen was worried, but the visit was a great success. We were seen to very quickly, her wound was healing well with no complications and the plaster was removed in favour of a moonboot. LGH discharged us from their care with notes for us to deliver to our doctors in the UK. Once again we have nothing but praise for the medical services. Massive thankyou to all concerned and the Reciprocal Medical Agreement we have with Australia.
    In and out of the clinic in under 1 hour we returned via the mall at Aspley to stock up for provisions for the weekend and for the family's return to EH on Thursday.
    Sushi, lamb/spinach curry, Bengali dal, sweet potato vindaloo, sausage rolls all done ready for the weekend.    Baca lagi

    Yeppoon

    9 April 2022, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

    A travelling day, packing up early we left under cloudy skies to head further north on the Bruce Highway. We passed through the sugar cane farming region and arrived at Rockhampton which lies just above the tropic of Capricorn. We were heading for the Capricorn Coast at Yeppoon. As we drove through the hills from Rockhampton to Yeppoon the rain seemed to have settled in. However as we neared the coast the sky lifted and we arrived to set up our sites in the dry.
    The girls loved the water slide and jumping pillow facilities on the site and spent a lot of their time on site there. We all enjoyed the free film at the site theatre one evening.
    Karen and I revisited Emu Park and the Singing Ship, another monument to Captain Cook. The winds were very strong and the noise of the air through the monument was very calming. A walked along the Remembrance Path to the Anzac memorial.
    On our previous visit the fabric shop here kept Karen amused for some time, but sadly this time it was closed for the duration of our visit.
    On the Monday Karen organised an Easter Egg hunt for the girls, which went down very well and in the evening we all went into Yeppoon where we had booked a meal at The Vue restaurant and wine bar. The food was excellent with a very varied menu which catered for us all.
    We needed to be back in Brisbane for an appointment at the fracture clinic on Wednesday, so we left the site early Tuesday morning for the long drive back to Brisbane.    Baca lagi

    The Town of 1770

    6 April 2022, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

    On our first full day we drove into the local library to view the tourist information, keep up with our diary and to do emails. We then drove up to the point for a quick look at the peninsular head. We had completed the walk up to the lookout on a previous trip but this time, with Karen’s foot in plaster we enjoyed the views from the car.
    In the evening we all trotted down to the local marina to enjoy a fish and chip supper as the sun dropped below the horizon. The marina is a magnet for people visiting the area to watch the sunset over the bay. This is virtually at the point where Captain Cook anchored prior to stepping onto what would become Queensland soil for the first time in 1770.
    The Barramundi and Sweetlips fish were delightful which we all enjoyed as the sky ran through its colours for the evening. The girls enjoyed skimming stones on the beach in the twilight.
    We spent the next morning with the girls fishing off the beach, but with no luck. The guy fishing off the rocks next to us was catching what looked like cat fish, but he seemed pleased with his result and was intent on taking them home to eat. Sophie and Samantha enjoyed the experience in the baking hot sun even though we only caught rocks most of the time. They tell me that one large fish definitely got away. Back at camp Summer used the white stool to raise up her left foot in sympathy with Granny.
    The following day we visited the museum which is adjacent to the library, it tells the story of the early pioneers in the area and clearly the community is very proud that this is the place that Captain Cook chose to pick for his second steps onto the continent. Afterwards we re-visited the monument on the headland which commemorates the exact spot where CC came ashore. We did not take a picture as we had previously done so three years ago. Karen set off for a very short walk along the cliff path, crutches and all.
    In the evening we returned to the beach adjacent the the marina, set up tables and chairs and A and Jamie with Sophie’s assistance drove into the precinct to get some pizzas. We watched another lovely sunset over the bay after which the elder girls tried to restyle Granny's hair.    Baca lagi

    The town of 1770

    5 April 2022, Australia ⋅ 🌙 23 °C

    A travelling day further north through fields of fruit and nut trees and sugar plantations. We are visiting the Town of 1770 and are booked in at the Captain Cook camping resort. We travelled in 2 cars, one car with all the "girls" (5 of us) and the other car with Alan and Jamie. No need to say which was the quieter car!!!! Although the 3 grandchildren were so well behaved on the long journey and were fairly quiet.
    A stop at Subway in Bundaberg on the way fulfilled our appetites for the day.
    Sophie and Dad conjoured up a great bacon breakfast to start our day the next morning.    Baca lagi

    Australianisms!!!

    So we thought we knew all of the Australian terms we would need for our stay on the East Coast- wearing thongs and not flip flops, swimming togs and not costumes, asking for a schooner of beer and not a pint etc etc. However, upon chatting with our delightful granddaughters it appears we were uneducated on many fronts. The following terms have been vital during this trip
    Zombie chews - a sour chewy sweet
    Violet crumble- a sweet very similar to crunchie
    Redskins- chewy lolly
    Dagwood dog - hot dog sausage wrapped in breadcrumbs, fried
    Fairy bread - bread and butter with 100s and 1000s sprinkled on top
    Cheerios - frankfurter type sausages
    Cotton candy and fairy floss - types of candy floss
    Up and go - breakfast drink
    Milo- a chocolate drink or cereal
    Tim tams - a biscuit like a penguin
    Lamington - cake covered in chocolate icing and coconut
    Spider - soda with ice cream
    Trollie - brand of lolly
    Warheads - extremely sour chewy sweets
    Lamington flavoured chips
    Bertie beetle - chocolate with bits of honeycomb in the shape of a beetle    Baca lagi

    Gympie

    2 April 2022, Australia ⋅ 🌙 19 °C

    On Saturday, after a 12 hour sleep (much needed after a night spent in hospital where sleep was almost impossible) Karen was feeling fine - so we set off on our trip in the afternoon after some morning re-stocking with food and drink at the local mall.
    We stayed at the Cobb and Co site which is an open woodland location to the south east of the city of Gympie. The Cobb family opened up the area in the 19th century and started the first tourism to these parts through their coach company amongst other enterprises.
    The camp site was great and the girls enjoyed the freedom to cycle through the park and to play in the billabong, the rope swings were a great success once the initial fears were overcome.
    The campsite owner's train ride antics were great fun for the children but a broken ankle for the owner waiting to happen, as he leapt from carriage to carriage as the train rattled over rough ground.
    We enjoyed some great chicken and lamb bbqs. The purchase of a fire pit gave the girls the opportunity to melt some marshmallows, inventing some new tasty treats with biscuits along the way.    Baca lagi

    Eatons Hill

    We got the call to visit the fracture Clinic early on Friday morning, Further x-rays were taken and Karen was asked to do a weight bearing x-ray which was painful. it was confirmed that surgery would be the best outcome and we would be contacted with an appointment for some time within the next 14 days, but hopefully it could be done some time in the coming week.
    We spent the weekend with the family once again and enjoyed a picnic at Sandgate, shading ourselves from the sunshine under a canopy. We let the girls loose with Alan's camera and they took some nice pictures of the afternoon.
    On Tuesday Karen phoned the hospital to see if there was a planned date for her surgery and was told that currently her name did not appear on this week's schedules. That was a great disappointment, however, the following morning we were advised that surgery was booked in for this coming Thursday .- happy days.
    All went smoothly on the day of the operation and Karen stayed in overnight for observations etc after the general anaesthetic. By mid afternoon the next day she was ready to leave to return to Eatons Hill.
    We decided to wait until the morning to determine if we would carry on with our planned road trip up the coast with Jamie et al.    Baca lagi

    Eatons Hill

    We returned to Brisbane to family on the Saturday whilst we waited to be contacted by the fracture clinic at Logan General Hospital.
    We had a quiet weekend at the family home watching the girls play and playing scrabble and monopoly together.
    A picked the older girls up from school on a couple of days and after an ice cream we took the drone to the park for a play. The afternoon temperatures were extremely hot.
    Karen made Sushi with the girls one evening which was a great hit and Grandpa cooked two curry meals from the Meera Sodha vegetarian and meat cook books which were all most enjoyable.
    The girls practised their acrobatics in the garden and little Summer tried once again to emulate them.
    We re-evaluated our planned road trip with the family prior to Easter, cancelled the Canarvon Gorge element of the trip and inserted a trip to Yeppoon in its place.    Baca lagi
