We contacted the owners of the cottage that we had booked into for winter to see if we could get access in early. Thankfully for us, due to the increased tier system measures, we were able to move in immediately so we made our way over on Christmas eve.
The cottage is part of a group of old barn buildings which have been converted to holiday cottages - we have a small cottage in a terrace which was lovely and cosy on our arrival. We spent the afternoon emptying the van into the cottage which will be our home for the winter months.
The cottage is surrounded by farming land - green fields for cattle and sheep, walking tracks abound. On Christmas day, waking up to sunshine, we went for a short walk across the fields towards South Perrott - returning by the Langmoor Trail track to Mosterton. It was very wet underfoot but the views across the countryside well worth the effort.
We enjoyed a full Christmas dinner - turkey, stuffing pigs in blankets and all - excellent.
On boxing day we wandered into the village to get the Saturday paper and enjoyed a peaceful day

    19 de dezembro de 2020, Inglaterra ⋅ 🌧 10 °C

We used Friday to stock up on food for our proposed visit to Sidmouth over Christmas, leaving just a fresh turkey to purchase before the event.
On Saturday we got the miserable news that due to the virus spreading new covid prevention measures were being implemented, which meant we had to abort all plans. Like many people around the entire UK we will be spending Xmas alone. At least we have plenty of food and drink - and it is only one Christmas. By this time next year we should be back to normal!!!
On Sunday we parked up at the South Winchester Park and Ride and walked via the Hockley viaduct to St Catherine's Hill followed by a walk along the meadows. The weather was beautiful - blue sky and sun. There were many people out and about makng the most of the warm weather. We avoided Winchester city centre, and enjoyed the beautiful scenery.

We returned to Body Farm at North Baddesley, so we could properly self isolate prior to Christmas - The site at Warsash was fully booked for the Christmas week and we thought it more wise to rely on our own facilities prior to seeing family.
Big thanks to Syd and Jo once again for assisting us with the move.
We met with Mike and Lizz in the afternoon for a socially distanced walk in Chandlers Ford. We enjoyed the mince pie and mulled wine. Tuesday saw Karen meeting with the girls for a walk around Chandlers Ford and on Wednesday she caught up with Charmaine too.
Alan tested the walking tracks around our site which were all very soggy underfoot after all the recent rain.
On Thursday we met with Vivien and Graham at Calshot for a walk along the sea front. It was quite chilly in the wind, but we found shelter behind the sports building where we had our picnic prior to enjoying a coffee and tea inside at the cafe. After that we walked along the pebble beach.

We completed The Solent Way walk today under a grey sky. We drove to Hilsea once again and picked up the footpath on Langstone Harbour - this time walking northwards. The landscape was flat, the path hugged the harbourside and we barely got to 2 - 3 metres above sea level all day. The tide was out during our walk and there were plenty of Brent Geese feeding in the harbour and on the grasslands behind the sea wall.
We finished the walk at Emsworth, which was as nice as ever, in perfect time to catch the direct train back to Hilsea.
All in all, in completing this walk, we covered 176.8 km (110.5miles) and 238240 steps, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed.

The penultimate section of our walk saw us driving to Hilsea where we parked up near to the train station. From there we walked across to Langstone Harbour to pick up the pathway which we followed southwards into Portsmouth. We watched a strange incident in the harbour - the surface of the water was broken as if by an underwater jet which lasted for a few seconds. The water surface appeared to be boiling for which we could see no explanation, the eruption soon died down to a steady stream of water coming from below which rippled the surface- presumably some pumped outflow into the harbour. An egret clearly considered it the possible source of some food.
This section of the walk was most enjoyable, hugging the coastline for most of the way - around Eastney, Southsea and into Old Portsmouth. - an area rich in naval history with monuments and memorials galore.
The walk took us through Gunwharf Quays, and after a cursory visit to M and S and a compulsory visit to the Cadbury shop we escaped the commerce to finish the walk at the Harbour train station where we were lucky to find a train to take us back to Hilsea waiting on the platform.

We dusted off our EH membership cards and booked ourselves in for a visit to Porchester Castle. A bitingly cold day with a sharp wind under a blue sky.
The audio guide for the castle keep was most interesting - covering the early history of the site as a stronghold for the Kings of England, as they prepared for wars with the French et al, and its use as a prison for captured foe.
We climbed up into the keep prior to descending down a beautifully engineered spiral staircase.
We walked along the Porchester Castle trail outside the old fort which took us along the banks of the harbour.

We chose today to do the next section of our walk which was the section passing along Stokes Bay round the head into Gosport.
We parked up in Alverstoke and returned on foot to The Diving Museum - walking into a sharp and very cold wind. We could see the red flags flying at Downberry which would have prevented us from passing through the military training area had we been going in that direction. From the museum we walked along the foreshore through Stokes Bay and around Gilkicker Fort. The Fort has been decommissioned for some time and is protected by high fencing with barbed wire. We quickly passed around it and continued on our way through Haslar, past the Royal Military Hospital which is being or has been converted into flats and houses.
We wandered past the entrance to the submarine museum then passed over the Haslar bridge into the harbourside marinas. The promenade overlooks Portsmouth and Gunwharf Quays where we had clear views of the waterside and the old city. The two new Royal Navy aircraft carriers were in port alongside the quay at the Royal Docks - they are truly enormous.
We enjoyed our picnic on the promenade adjacent to the sundial clock and the multi storey building that brilliantly puts it in the shade for most of the day.

    30 de novembro de 2020, Inglaterra ⋅ ⛅ 7 °C

We had already completed the Warsash to Stubbington sections of the walk in our first week here so we drove to Meon Shore where we parked up. A very cloudy and misty day - The Isle of Wight could not be seen on the other side of The Solent.
The walk hugged the shoreline all the way to Gosport except where the high tide forced us inland for a short section. We passed through Lee on Solent into Browndown military training area ending up at The Diving Museum at the periphery of Stokes Bay. There were some very early examples of deep diving gear on show outside - must have been some very brave men and women who climbed into them. The walk along the shingle through the military area was hard work so we returned via the road to miss that section out on the return journey. The mist barely cleared all day.
