    Las Médulas means “the marrows”. It was a Roman gold mine that operated from around 30 AD until the beginning of the 3rd century. The Romans built a system of channels that drew water from nearby mountains, ultimately creating a blast that washed sediment down the side of the mountain for gold panning.
