  • Bangkok, Thailand

    Dec 14–16, 2023 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 46 °F

After processing through the Bangkok airport we caught a van to take us the 1 hour into downtown. The distance is only about 20 miles but the traffic is perpetually busy. Glad we are not driving. On the way in we saw some incredible architecture-very imaginative and modern, mixed with the normal detritus of almost any large city. We also were struck by a proliferation of huge billboards-easily 4-20 times the size of billboards in the US.
After arriving at our hotel, the Centre Pointe , in downtown , we cleaned up and got a bite to eat before we hibernated for the next 2 days. We awoke pretty refreshed and got ready to fly to Chiang Mai, the Capital of Northern Highland. We were going to stay there for 5 nights by ourselves before meetings 3 other couples for a Norwegian cruise of Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia (Bali x3 nights and Lombok for 1 night) and ending the Cruise in Singapore.

After sleeping for 2 nights in Bangkok to recover from the flights, we caught a van back to the Bangkok Airport to fly North to the capitol of Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai. Here we found incredible temples, a bustling city of a more manageable size than Bangkok, and some fascinating tours.Read more

  • Norwegian Cruise Line “JEWEL” sign-in

    December 22, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

Having spent the last couple of days in Bangkok at a pretty exhausting pace we were looking forward to the much more relaxed pace of an ocean cruise on the NCL “JEWEL” for the next 2 weeks. Unfortunately, our previous experiences with multiple cruise ships di not prepare us for the extremely disorganised sign-in and boarding procedures as done by Norwegian was horrible. Instead of 15-20 minutes of normal embarkation, we were stuck in interminable lines for 2-3 hours before we finally made it onto the ship.! And then, we had to find our luggage in a pile on our floor and move it into our room-never happened before. Go with Holland America, Celebrity or the like.
Once on board things started looking up. The cabin stewards, dining room wait-staff, and Matre de’s were all excellent, although much more stressed than other cruises due to personnel shortages-another systemic short-sighted decision. Our group of 8 quickly set into a routine of meeting for meals and excursions, and resting well and often. Our schedule included stops in Koh Samui (Thailand Island), Saigon,Vietnam (overnight) then 2 days at sea as we sailed to Bali Island for 3 stops(Indonesia), then 1 stop on Lomboc Island(also Indonesia), before finishing up in Singapore for 3 days. I will dedicate a footprint to each of our stops.

  • Next cruise stop is Saigon, Vietnam

    Dec 25–26, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ 🌬 82 °F

We sailed over to Vietnam's largest city, Saigon( aka Ho Chi Minh City since the end of the Vietnam war) for an overnight stay. We selected a Boutique hotel called Bon Ami close to the downtown sights and market. We walked all over Saigon, saw lots of great shopping and the sights of the helicopter evacuation of the city in 1975 from the rooftop of a CIA safe house. We had a drink on the rooftop bar where the news correspondents stayed during the war and briefly went into the Hanoi Hilton where our POW's , including John McCain spent 7 years as a prisoner.
We learned that Hannah, Kevin's wife andour tour hostess for our next trip segment, is a world class negotiator, especially for jewelry. We took advantage of that to buy a gorgeous set of pearls, with a gold and emerald broach incorporated into it at a huge market across from our hotel.
