    July 24, 2016 on the Philippines ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

Hello Manila - arrived in the Philippines and now need to find out where to transfer to get domestic flight to Catlclan for Boracay. After heading to departures we realised we were in the wrong terminal so needed to transfer to T4. Waited a short time for a transfer then got to T4 to find out flight has been cancelled - and now need to get to T3 for a Philippines airlines flight..Read more

  • Still waiting at Manila Airport

    July 24, 2016 on the Philippines ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

The adventure continues - nearly been in all of Manila Airports terminals - plus has to pay for my checked- in luggage as even though they had checked it in no problem in Hong Kong - so £38 later my bag is now checked in and I am eating Krispy Creme doughnuts and pilinuts waiting for another delayed flight which will hopefully get me to Boracay before dark!Read more

  • Boracay Finally

    July 24, 2016 on the Philippines ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

So with the cancellations and delays we got here before dark - just! Getting here from Catliclan airport involved two minibuses and a small boat which looked like it wasn't going to start - Boracay is the sort of place that is grown too fast for it's infrastructure - hundreds of motorbikes and motortaxis clog the narrow streets. Although they do have some fancy electric motortaxis. We venture out to the western side of the island and to D'Mall - where I had Mexican Chimichangas for dinner. The whole areas is heaving and this is supposedly the low seaon.Luckily the place we are staying is on the east side which may not have the best beaches but is certaintly quieter (albeit the noisy mainland Chinese families staying in the hotel) - I heard thunder so maybe not so tonight!Read more

  • Exploring Boracay

    July 25, 2016 on the Philippines ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Walked over to the White beach..wow it's so beautiful. Turquoise coloured sea and white sand and Palm trees when you look one way however bars, shops, restaurants and all manner of people try to sell board trips or massage behind you! Wandered south until the bars thinned out then returned to find somewhere for late lunch - settled on Munchies for Filipino food - cheap and tasty.Read more

  • Time to relax

    July 26, 2016 on the Philippines ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

So today I achieved my objective of getting over the jet-lag - with a lovely relaxing day. Got up at 8 to enjoy the morning rays before it got too warm. Then had lunch at "Munchies" before exploring the Northern part of White beach. Returning to the pool to cool down. I wanted to see the sunset on the western side of the island so walked through the D'Mall again.Read more

  • Boracay Sunset

    July 26, 2016 on the Philippines ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

At 5pm i decided it was time to head back to White beach for the Sunset. So walked through D'Mall again. I was intrigued by the amount of people queing for something called Halo Halo - so we stopped off to buy one - Kay's was Mango Ice and mine pineapple. It's a very elaborate dessert made up of crushed ice, juice, tropical fruits, I've cream and "cornflakes"!! Quite nice.
Halo Halo finished we made out way to the beach which was buzzing - people playing beach volley, football, boat trip touts and kids making sand sculptures - which all said "I ❤ Boracay" - pay to take a photo - which I did.
The sunset was stunning - even though I was sharing the beach with thousands of other amateur photographers trying to get the perfect shot!
Dinner was back in D'Mall at "Spicy Chicken" #4 on trip advisor - my piri piri chicken sandwich with veggie crisps was yummy.
Now time to put on the After Sun and relax with a Malibu and fruit juice.

  • Boracay to Kalibo

    July 28, 2016 on the Philippines ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

So up at stupid o'clock - no sunrise due to rain and cloud - left vote at 7am and was transferred to the small jetty for the short ferry to Malay island - then transferred to large bus for the 2 hour journey to Kalibo - 72km - slow due to small roads and amount of motortaxis the driver has to overtake. Now I need to wait until I can check in at 11:30 - Kay's flight departs at 12:30 - mine at 14:30 - should be in Singapore for 19:40.Read more

  • Day 1 in Sin

    July 29, 2016 in Singapore ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

So now the real work/tour begins - after breakfast at 7:30 in a garage!! Yes - the hotel is renovating so they have their restaurant in a car port!! We set of at 8 for the first of 3 planned visits. First stop - Ministry of Education heritage centre - housed in a former Primary School in Queenstown New Town - this was a museum of the history of Education in Singapore - we were shown around the centre by a former principal - From there we went to the Seragoon Garden Secondary school to meet the geography teachers and learn about geography teaching in government schools - we went into what I can only describe as the most uninspiring classroom I have ever been in - grey walls, drab not even a map. The students were very polite and quite subdued compated to mine.
Our final visit was to the Housing Development Board to learn about social housing and new town development - very informative with even a look inside show flats - so I'm out free time some of us decided to take the MRT to see the New Town of Punggol - which is supposedly sustainable. It certainly is well planned with integrated transport and lots of communal areas and green roof gardens. Shopping Malls and schools. However I couldn't help thinking it was a little soulless. We took a ride on the Elevated LRT on the way back to get an overview - many areas are still being constructed.
Evening was spent near Chinatown getting Satay in the street market overlooked by the financial district buildings and then walking along Boat and Clark Quay - which was certainly buzzing for a Friday night!

Breafast in the car park and we departed for a short city tour in the morning stopping in Little India first - getting a henna tattoo on my upper arm for S$8. The next stop took us to the Colonial district and we stopped to take photos from Merlion Park of the view. Then we drove through the financial district to stop at a Hokkien Temple and then to Chinatown to stop at the URC.
Lunch was Hainan Chicken Rice at the Maxwell Road Hawker centre. Then I took a wander around Chinatown.

  • Arab street by night

    July 30, 2016 in Singapore ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Ruth had mentioned that there was something going on in the Arab Street area so 5 of us decided to investigate - it was a 10 min walk - we saw the Beautiful Sultan Mosque - although we couldn't go in due to inappropriate attitire and also as it was prayer time. The whole area has been cleaned up and seems a bit too touristy - we found Zam Zam rated the best place to eat Murtabak - believe me it was tasty - i had the Mutton one - it's like a stuffed thin Naan bread. Then we wandered over to the Malay Heritage Centre where there appeared to be a party going on - we saw a Gamelan band, drummers and dancers - it turned out of was Malay New Year - and we ended up meeting the Minister for Home Affairs twice and filmed by local tv.Read more
