    London to Faro

    November 28 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Plane, coach and a train to eventually arrive in Lagos for the start of the Fisherman’s Trail.
    Alarm set for a 7am start ⏰

  • Walking day 1 Lagos > Figoueira

    November 29 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

So we are walking South to North on the Fisherman’s Trail.
Fabulous start, up and out after a big ol bowl of porridge and blueberries. We saw the sun rise and our first stork.
Started out flat on boardwalk then got progressively harder. We knew we were pushing our luck to get 26 miles in today. Had the terrain been marginally easier we may have made it but pulled off the trail at 18 miles. Rocky & slippery with beautiful white sandy beaches, quaint villages and perfect hiking temps…
All finished off with a juicy ribeye steak & portobello mushroom steak. Think I maybe asleep before my head hits the pillow tonight.

  • Day 2 Sagres to Vila do Bispo

    November 30 in Portugal ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

Mostly coast walking today. A pro of walking this rugged coastline from the South is the sun is always behind you the con, you’re walking into a strong headwind. Beautiful clear blue skies to match the sea. Little ascent, no sand (I hear that’s to come!). Found a great little apartment in Vila do Bispo with all amenities inc. an Aldi & Lidl, what more can you ask for!Read more

  • Day 3 Vila do Bispo > Arrifana

    December 1 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

What a day! Sunrise, 20 degrees, blue sky all day, crashing waves, eucalyptus forest’s, golden sandy beaches, a very welcome surprise cafe, views galore, arrived into town to see the sunset. Oh to have a camper van on this trail…
Left at 06:45 arrived at the loveliest hostel 17:30. Walked a mile to what looked like the best veggie restaurant to find it closed! Oops!
Signage good but at times shared with the GR11.
Two beaches to cross if the tide allows.
    Bloody love this trail 🤩

  • Day 4 Arrifana > Odeceixe

    December 2 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Arrifana is a lovely coastal town with a surfy, hippie yoga well being kinda feel about it. Very chilled and friendly.
Left again to blue skies, headed away from the coast in land today toward Aljezur. This is a really sweet town and would happily have stayed here to explore. This was our lunch stop. We had a lot of road walking today so cut it short at 17 miles and caught an Uber to Odeceixe to our hostel for the night.Read more

  • Day 5 Odeceixe > Zambujeira

    December 3 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

The path was diverse today - sandy forest tracks, mostly cliff top walking (again sand), 194 steps down to the most amazing beach and waterfall. Robin dipped in the waterfall. I got caught out by the waves. Only wading ankle deep, the wave came in so quickly and soaked me up to my shorts. We also walked past a private zoo but didn’t see any animals. Arrived into Zambujeira around 15:00 to check straight into the loveliest hostel. We were given a private room with double and single bed. Massage shower, complimentary washing machine, wine, Netflix and a warm fire. All in all a really lovely day.Read more

  • Day 6 Zambujeira >Vila Nova de Milfontes

    December 4 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

Asleep by 20:30 last night for a 6:45 start. We decided to walk two stages today. This trip is either short days or 20+ milers.
Coffee, a pastry and we were off onto a sandy trail. The sand was to be for most of the day. At one stage we came across a field of cows, it was strange to see a green field. Walked all day at a lower elevation, the sea constantly crashing in our ears. There were also bamboo tunnels, forest & a long haul into town as the ferry was closed for the winter 😩

1 fall (Robin) he’s okay - 10am coffee with a whisky chaser (Robin).
1 rabbit seen, me. Stabbed in a vein by a prickly plant (me), amazing birds and plants.

  • Day 7 Vila Nova de Milfontes >Porto Covo

    December 5 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Sad to say it’s our last day on the Fisherman’s Trail. Left Milfontes expecting a showery first half but got away with a few light showers. Considering this was a short day we both said our legs felt heavy!
The waves danced along with us and at times were mahoosive.
Robin spotted the very familiar yellow Camino sign as we walked into Porto Cavo 💛
Warm soup and fries before catching the bus back to Lagos. A lovely day but will be very glad to rest my weary feet…
