  • Siem Reap

    February 23, 2025 in Cambodia ⋅ ☁️ 35 °C

Relaxing day around town. We strolled across town to see the National Museum, which was quite large and had tons of cool stuff about Angkor wat and other temples.

Lunch, then we hit the big and comprehensive grocery store across the street, then tuktuk home. Afternoon at the pool relaxing.Read more

  • Angkor wat

    February 24, 2025 in Cambodia ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

We hired a driver to take us about today - same driver that Gerrit and family used 3 years ago.

We started at Angkor Wat, the most famous temple. Spent a few hours exploring.

After that we saw a smaller but much older temple, then another one.

Lunch, then the coolest, Ta Phrom, also known as " tomb raider" temple as it was in the movie of the same name. Amazing.

We have a 3-day temple ticket, so we head out tomorrow with our same driver to see more.

Hung out in our Airbnb until noon, then had a private transfer to the new airport which is waaaay outside of town. Great driver, and we shared various perspectives on current government in cambodia and US. He was very well informed.

Our flight isn't until 5 pm, so we're chilling at the lounge 🤣🤣

  • Relaxing in Luang Prabang

    Mar 1–5, 2025 in Laos ⋅ ☁️ 35 °C

Our first four nights in Luang Prabang were spent at a resort a bit out of town, across the Khan river. I think when we booked it there was a pedestrian bridge nearby that dropped right into the town center. But it is currently taken down as they are doing construction on the banks of the river.

The walk into town the long way around isn't too bad, about 20 minutes. Unlike Siem Reap there don't seem to be little tuktuks everywhere. So we generally walk in, and have on occasion found a truck taxi back.

Mostly we just hung out, as I've been feeling under the weather (well, my butt has 🤣🤣 ). Also we are returning for a while week after we go to Nong Khiaw, so we are saving the tourist stuff for then.

We did have drinks and dinner with a very fun nomad couple from the UK. We hope to run into Callum and Jan again.

  • Nong Khiaw

    Mar 5–8, 2025 in Laos ⋅ ☁️ 33 °C

We took a very bumpy 4 hour van ride from LP up to the small town of Nong Khiaw.

We are in the poshest resort in town, and it's nice but rustic. We're thankful for the pool!

The town is on a peaceful river, and surrounded by massive karst outcroppings. Feels a little bit like leavenior Banff.

The vibe is definitely backpackers, hostels, and guesthouses. And many outdoor activities such as climbing up (steep) trails to lookouts, exploring caves, boat trips, kayaks, and multi-day trekking. Bill climbed up to one lookout and it was hard going. We also explored one cave, a little.

But it's hazy/smokey this time of year, and we're not feeling super adventuress, so we're mostly taking it easy. It's a cool little town, for sure.

  • Luang Prabang part 2

    Mar 8–15, 2025 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

After Nong khiaw, we headed back to Luang Prabang for a week. This time we were across the street from the Mekong, a bit south of the happening part of town.
We did a few tourist sites, the grand palace and national museum, and many wats. It was hot!!
We enjoyed the town, but would have liked it more if we were a bit closer in. It was a 15 minute walk to the night market area, and 30-40 min if we walked to the far end of the peninsula. Which is usually no big deal, but for this heat of 95 daily.

We did spend one day with a private driver who took us up to Kuang Si falls, which are spectacular. Reminded us of Plitvice and also the falls near Palenque. We took a dip that was so refreshing!

A few days in the capital city of Vientiane. We did one full-day tour to see the top sites. But otherwise found this town a bit charmless.
