We walked the length of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, stopping at the PSG shop and the Nike store for a quick run-down of their trainer tech! We explored a sculpture of very realistic looking squishy balloon tulips Coen spotted a green spider that interested him and delighted in using the free, self-cleaning toilet. We passed round the Place de la Concorde, currently shut off as they construct stands for the upcoming Olympic Games, and wandered through the sunny Jardin des Tuileries to tickle the tip of the Louvre Pyramid.Read more

  • Les îles de Paris

    May 24, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

After lunch, we made our way to l'Île de la Cité to see Notre-Dame, currently mid way through its rebuild after the 2019 fire. Busy place! There were photos on display of those involved in the work, from the safety and catering teams, to the stonemasons and stained glass artists.

We crossed over to l'île de Saint Louis and found the famous Berthillon ice cream parlours. Mum nipped into Some Glorious Church while the others did their licking to the sound of kids playing in their school playgrounds.

  • Montemarte & Sacre Coeur I

    May 25, 2024 in France ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We caught the Metro to Pigalle and fought the Saturday morning crowds to take some of the quieter cobbled streets up to Montmartre. The cafes, shops and roads were buzzing with people! We passed the Moulin de la Galette, and lots of souvenir shops on our way to la basilique du Sacré-Cœur.

After a short family conference, we decided that the dome could be a good way to tick off Rigo's wish to go up a high thing. We joined the fast-moving queue and made our way inside the basilica. Coen lit a candle by his chosen Saint and we marvelled at the mosaics, stained glass and models.

  • Climbing the Sacre Coeur dome

    May 25, 2024 in France ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

We managed to sneak in just before lunch break. There were 292 steps to the viewing level of the dome, most inside around a narrow, spiral stone staircase, and some outside over the rooftops and beside gargoyles. Encouraging messages appeared every so often.

The view was awesome! We spotted lots of famous landmarks - and felt a bit dizzy. The downward journey was just as much of an adventure, although noiser because of Jamie's flip flops.

  • Montmarte & Sacre Coeur II

    May 25, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

We found a shady garden near the basilica and cracked open our little picnic. There were great views of the white towers and a few artists were sketching out the famous scene.

We headed back down the hill via a couple of the well-known staircases and lampposts. Coen even ran back up one after he saw a couple of joggers doing the same.

There were a couple of crazy-busy streets, packed full of souvenir shops and people walking in all directions. Glad we avoided them earlier!

  • Tour Eiffel

    May 25, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

From Montmartre, we caught the Metro back west to visit Agnes, Gerald, Emilie, Laura & Alexandre at their apartment in Passy. We got a huge surprise when we saw the view of the Eiffel Tower from their roof terrace!

After a lovely couple of hours in the sunshine, catching up with each other's news, we headed towards the big girl herself and did our first swoons from the Viaduc de Passy, alongside some newlyweds and lots of people selling red roses.

We joined the huge crowds around the foot of the Tower (the cheapest souvenirs are here), and wondered about taking a boat tour but decided against it when we saw the queues. Instead, we grabbed some food from a little supermarket and found a spot in the Jardins de Trocadéro (what was accessible around the Olympic stands) to sit and watch as the sun went down, the Tower lit up and then sparkled when the clock struck 10pm.

  • Boat trip on the Seine

    May 26, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Coen's 'must do' was a boat trip on the Seine, so we took a spot on a big, open-topped Bateau Mouche and headed off for a different view of the city. The boat took off from near Pont Alexandre III and travelled east, past the islands to where the Canal St Martin meets the river, before turning and taking us all the way to the Eiffel Tower and back to the start.

Lots of waves (from other people, not in the water), great views and some info from the multi-lingual recorded tour guide all helped to make it a fun trip!

  • Le Marais

    May 26, 2024 in France ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Cousin Guillaume met us off the boat and marched us off to explore La Marais and surrounding areas. We started at Place de la République and wandered through a huge flea market, Le Carreau du Temple before attempting to have lunch in the Marché des Enfants Rouge but it was so busy that the whole thing seemed impossible. Great atmosphere though!

We found a quiet place called Little Apple for lunch and caught up with Guillaume before heading off on a hunt for macarons and beautiful buildings. The first real rains of our trip arrived but we dried off quickly in the sunshine of the impressive Place des Vosges.
