I came through here the previous day on the bike and we decided to stop off on our way to the next location to take a look at the impressive castle that overlooked the town. The aire is situated next to the fire station and has been improved by the volunteer fire fighters who have added a washing up area and seating alongside the free to use water, grey and black waste points.Baca lagi

Lovely little spot right next to the Tagus, where the remains of a 30,000 year old settlement were discovered. Nice aire with all the facilities and a resturant just few meters away. We took a walk along the river looking for the advertised otters, kingfishers and other wildlife but came away without catching a glimpse. As it was the day before Valentine we went for a really nice meal on the evening.
This morning we got chatting to a couple of Brits out here for the first time, nice couple called Elspeth and Jim, before heading further north through Castello Branco to the edge of Penamacor.

Still heading north, drove through one of Portugal's national parks. Some very steep and twisty roads with stunning views down into the valleys. Dificult to take it all in when driving as a lot of the bends have no barriers and it's a longgggg way down. Stayed the night on an aire located behind the town's multi purpose arena. Water, waste and free 16amp electric points. Made the most of that by baking potatoes in the halogen oven. Incredible that a small town in rural Portugal can provide you with a place to spend the night, including electric, without any charge.Baca lagi

    16 Februari 2020, Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

The drive to this aire was pretty spectacular, through national park gaining and losing altitude continuously. The parking was opposite Campismo do Rio de Anor but unfortunately at this time of year all the services were turned off. Wasn't a problem as we had sorted that before we left the last location.
What a stunning little village this is, I took the dog for a walk through it and came across the local band playing outside a bar. The houses are a mish mash of stone and wood with what looks like new builds next to almost derelict houses. We were only about 400 yards from the Spanish border and this must be the narrowest crossing anywhere. Wasn't sure that the motorhome would even fit through the narrow cobbled streets.

The drive out of the village this morning was a littke hairy but we made it without incident. After a long day driving we parked up at the edge of town and took a stroll. Nice location close to a river and park area. We entered the town over a lovely stone bridge and found a bar open with outside seating, dogs aren't welcome in most bars across Spain, and enjoyed a beer. We are feeling the temperature change as we travel north and it was pretty cold sitting outdoors. The town has some lovely buildings but like most places there doesn't seem to be enough people to populate the amount of houses and apartments.Baca lagi

  • Alarcia

    18 Februari 2020, Sepanyol ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

Spent a very cold but peaceful evening in Alarcia. Chose this aire for its close location to a bar that had free wifi and did good food. Shame that it closes on Tuesdays! Still after a frosty start to the day we went onto the now open bar for breakfast. Fried chorizo, eggs, warm crusty bread and coffee all for the princely sum of €6 each. The drive down the mountain was pretty amazing too.Baca lagi

We stopped at an aire a few miles from here mainly due to the fact that there were a couple of grocery stores there and Tess had eaten the last of her food that morning. However we couldn't fond either store at the locations google maps provided so we moved on.
This was a nice aire, €4 for up to 72 hours next to a leisure centre and cafe. Barrier entrance and services. Got talking to a nice Scottish couple and managed to pick up an open Wi-Fi signal from somewhere.

Long drive today, covered about 450 kilometres with a stopover for a quick bout of shopping and fuel.
Arrived at tonights stopover and realised that we stayed here last year on our way back. Nice little aire surrounded by woodland, they've even put water and electric points in.
Good news is we can now pick up UK satellite TV so this evening will be spent watching the rugby.

Last stopover in France and we have returned to Ry village. Stayed here on our way out last time and it's a very welcoming place, however Sunday evening and Monday pretty much every thing is closed. Still we took advantage of the free electric and chilled out with the rugby. Tomorrow we have a couple of hours drive to the eurotunnel.Baca lagi

    24 Februari 2020, Perancis ⋅ 🌬 10 °C

The plan was for a nice relaxed couple of hours drive from Ry Village to here. Didn't exactly turn out as planed. We left with more than enough time to spare which was just as well. As it got dark the rain started to fall and the wind picked up. As we weren't using tolls we were driving along the unlit D roads with virtually no visabilaty, add to that the patches of thick fog that kept popping up and all in all it was a bit of a pain journey. Jaynes heart rate peaked at about 125bpm but was above 110bpm for most of the drive.
After finally reaching Calais, check in was smooth and hassle free, we even got on to an earlier train so were back in the UK by 10pm.

We were planning on making an overnight stop around Folkestone but decided to continue back to Norfolk and avoid the morning rush hour. To be honest I'm not sure it would have been much different. After 5 1/2 months of pretty amazing driving, spectacular scenery, minimal traffic and almost no stress (Ry to Calais and exception) as soon as we left the terminal we got stuck in traffic. It was the same story virtually all the way back, road works traffic jams, police cars and ambulances flying by, and articulated lorrys swarming with police removing illegal migrants!
Oh it's so good to be back in the UK!!
Finally arrived at Dower House around 01.40 and parked up in the lane to catch a few hours sleep before making our way in the following morning.
It felt great to be back at Dower and we have a couple of weeks now before the start of the season.
It's been a brilliant winter and we have travelled to some amazing places, but it's now over for another season.
See you later on this year.
