Freunde der Sonne ☀️

Heute begrüßen euch die zwölf süßen und verwöhnten Hühner von unserem derzeitigen Aufenthaltsort. Wir leben bei Dana, der entspanntesten und tollsten Gastmama, die man sich nur wünschen kann. Dana hat dieses Anwesen vor ein paar Jahren gekauft und transformiert dies immer mehr zur ursprünglichen Natur zurück, mit nicht invasiven Pflanzen und Obst&Gemüse, welches hier in Nova Scotia wächst.
Wir lernen eine Menge von Dana, von Permakultur bis zu Pflanzenkunde, sowie über sämtliche handwerkliche Tätigkeiten.
Auf dem Anwesen lebt auch noch Adam mit seinem Hund Gus (wir vergöttern Gus!), der sämtliche Bauarbeiten am und rund ums Haus leitet.
Was wir hier so tagtäglich machen und unsere Aufgaben sind, zeigen wir euch noch einmal in einem separaten Post - wir wollen euch erstmal in dieses kleine Paradies mitten im nirgendwo entführen.

Mitten im Wald direkt an einem großen See, eigentlich nur mit fahrbaren Untersatz zu erreichen (10 Minuten Fahrzeit von der kleinen Stadt Hubbards), hat Dana ein kleines Ökoparadies gezaubert. Das Ziel ist es sich komplett selbst versorgen zu können, weswegen demnächst ein Gewächshaus entsteht um ganzjährig Gemüse ernten zu können.
Fast alles auf diesem Hof entsteht in Eigenregie, was das ganze noch etwas magischer macht.
Es gibt ein Haupthaus, Garage mit Werkstatt, zwei Tinyhäuser, eins bewohnbar im Sommer, das andere wird grade umgebaut (woran wir auch beteiligt sind) und der Hühnerstall.
Von fast jedem Fenster kann man den See sehen und ansonsten die zauberhafte Natur, die Aussicht ist einfach unschlagbar - Lari sagt die ganze Zeit, dass es sehr zen-mäßig ist :)
& wenn es im Winter schon so schön ist, können wir erahnen wie toll es hier im Sommer aussieht, wenn alle Blumen blühen, das Gras saftig ist und die Hühner frei auf dem Gelände umhertollen.

Die Hühner sind wohl die verwöhntesten Hühner im positiven Sinn, die wir je gesehen haben. Sie haben ein riesiges Außengehege mit Tunnel, bekommen selbst fermentiertes Futter und ganz viel frischen selbsthochgezogenen Hafer. Bis vor kurzem gabs sogar eine Mehlwurmfarm im Keller, damit die Kleinen den ganzen Winter mit Proteinen versorgt werden; leider hat Dana eine Allergie entwickelt und die Mehlwürmer wurden alle verfüttert. Das Wohlbefinden der Hühnchen steht hier aber über allem und so viel Glückseligkeit wird mit ununterbrochenenem Eiervorrat belohnt 🥚

Wie im vorhergehenden Post erwähnt sind wir hier ja mitten im Schnee angekommen, was uns ein richtiges Winterwunderland beschert hat für die erste Woche. Wir standen teils knietief (in Lari-Höhe) im Schnee, der See war fast komplett zugefroren und mit Schnee bedeckt. Danach wurden die Tage wieder etwas wärmer und die Sonne hat sich auch blicken lassen, der Schnee ist etwas geschmolzen und wir konnten den Steg rund um das Haus nutzen, welcher über das Wasser führt.
Diese riesige weiße Fläche, welche man auf den Bildern sehen kann, hinter dem Haus und dem Steg, ist alles der zugefrorene und mit Schnee bedeckte See.

..hier ist es einfach schön und wir sind dankbar hier Zeit verbringen zu dürfen.

Friends of the sun ☀️

The twelve sweet and spoiled chickens from our current location welcome you. We live with Dana, the most relaxed and amazing host you could wish for. Dana bought this property a few years ago and is transforming it back to its original nature with non-invasive plants and fruits & vegetables that grow here in Nova Scotia.
We learn a lot from Dana about permaculture and plants, as well as about all the crafts.
Adam also lives on the property with his dog Gus (we adore Gus!), who manages all the construction work on and around the house.
We'll show you what we do here on a daily basis and what our tasks are in a separate post - for now, we want to take you to this little paradise in the middle of nowhere.

Tucked deep into the woods next to a large lake Dana has build a little eco-paradise which can only be reached by car (a 10-minute drive from the small town of Hubbards). The goal is to be fully off-grid & self-sufficient within a few years, which is why a greenhouse will soon be built so that vegetables can be harvested all year round.
Almost everything on this farm is made by themselfs which makes the whole thing even more magical.
There is a main house, garage with all the things you need for handcraft, two tiny houses - one habitable in the summer, the other is currently being remodeled (which we are also involved in) and the chicken coop.
From almost every window you can see the lake or the magical nature, the view is simply unbeatable - Lari says all the time that it's very zen-like :)
& if it's already so beautiful in winter we can imagine how great it looks here in summer, when all the flowers are in bloom, the grass is lush and the chickens run around freely on the grounds.

The chickens are probably the most spoiled chickens we have ever seen, in the most positive way. They have a huge outdoor enclosure with a tunnel,
Dana grows them fodder/microgreens in winter and fermented feed.
Until recently there was even a mealworm farm in the basement to provide the chickens with protein throughout the winter, but unfortunately Dana developed an allergy and the mealworms had to go.. However, the well-being of the chickens is the most important thing and so much happiness is rewarded with non-stop eggs 🥚

As mentioned in the previous post we arrived here in the middle of the snow, which gave us a real winter wonderland for the first week. One some days we walked knee-deep through the snow, the lake was almost completely frozen and covered in snow. After the days got warmer again and the sun came out, the snow melted a little and we were able to use the boardwalk around the house, which leads over the water.
This huge white area, which you can see in the pictures, behind the house and the boardwalk is all the frozen and snow-covered lake.

...it is just beautiful here and we are so grateful to be able to spend time here.
