    Nexus and Shangri La, Kota Kinabalu

    Our first round of golf for the “Golfing Sector” of our holiday.
    We had an early breakfast and checked out prior to playing so that we weren’t under any time pressure.
    Looking at the layout on the score card it was evident that there was A LOT of water hazards, either adjacent to, or across the fairways.
    Playing with hired clubs is always a challenge as you struggle to adjust to the “new” clubs.
    It was good fun, even if very humid - according to the forecast it felt like 42 degrees!
    After golf we moved on to the Shangri La Resort. Another impressive building on well looked after grounds. The beach here was much wider and it was about 300m from the hotel to the sea.    Läs mer

    Mind the water on both sides!!

    Up early for golf.
    Similar to yesterday’s course it looked very much like there was a lot of water hazards.
    Luckily for us the actual course was kinder than the score card depicted, even if the odd hole had water on both sides!
    We had to be mindful of the wildlife, spotting a number of large monitor lizards.    Läs mer

    Up early again for golf, but unfortunately Mags’ back was not playing the game. So she could only manage the back 9 after it had loosened up a little.
    Dave had a good back 9 after a bit of a frustrating front 9.
    After golf we headed back to Kota Kinabalu via the Nexus resort for an excellent Mango smoothie.
    We were able to check into our hotel straight away, another nice resort in the city with views over the marina and golf course from the rooftop bar.    Läs mer

    Sutera Harbour resort, Kota Kinabalu

    The early morning was wet - as forecast - coupled with Mags sore back, which was
    much better than yesterday, we decided against golf.
    After a leisurely breakfast went on a sightseeing trip into town, initially to find the Atkinson Clock Tower that we had been threatening to visit for a while. The clock tower was built in 1905 in honour of a District Commissioner who had died of Malaria at the age of only 28.
    Just next to the clock was a mural remembering the Australian assistance in rebuilding Kota Kinabalu after WW2, and a lovely little street full of artisan craft and coffee shops where partook of a coffee and a very nice pistachio gateau. After which we walked to see a few of the city sights, passing some quirky buildings.
    For dinner we walked across to the sister hotel. This started off a bit like a sketch from Faulty Towers. Having managed to order tiger prawns with chips and a bottle of red wine, a bottle of white wine appeared. When we said this was incorrect the waitress said “No, you ordered white wine”. When we showed her that we hadn’t she tried to get us to accept the white wine, to which we refused and she wandered of in a daze not knowing how to rectify the situation, which wasn’t really a big deal as the bottle was unopened! Eventually a bottle of re wine appeared.
    A waiter came by with 2 plates of chips and asked if we wanted rice. We pointed out that he wasn’t carrying rice and so off he went to do a tour of the restaurant in search of a home for the chips, only to return under supervision a few minutes later. As time went on we began to wonder if we would ever get our dinner. Eventually our prawns arrived long after we had finished our chips, and were very nice.    Läs mer
