  • Night at Geraldton

    June 8, 2021 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

Made the last minute decision to stay in an Airbnb and what great decision it turned out to be...... It was a lovely comfortable house with lots of character and all the campers were washed out by torrential rain and howling wind.Read more

  • A years worth of rain in one night

    June 10, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Arrived at Yardie Creek Homestead to hear the news of massive rainfalls which prevented anyone exiting or entering. Many of the campsites were under water and they had also experienced gale force winds. We had spent the night in our cabin at Carnarvon pretty much oblivious to the mayhem and arrived to the calm after the storm!Read more

  • Swimming with whale sharks

    June 12, 2021, Indian Ocean ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

An early start (4.30am) to drive down to Coral Bay for our whale shark tour. The day began with a reef snorkel and within minutes we spotted sea turtles, which was definitely on our wish list, along with sea cucumbers and a myriad of beautiful coral fish. Then we motored North to the outside of the reef looking for the elusive whale sharks. The spotter plane had engine trouble (and had to return to the landing strip) but we loved standing up on the fly deck of the boat with our eyes pealed.......and we spotted them! It was the most incredible experience sliding into the ocean to swim with these 6 metre long, beautifully patterned, gigantic fish.
We had quite a large swell which made getting back into the boat an adventure in itself. We saw a number of humpback whales including a very close encounter with one that surfaced and breached next to the boat. We also spotted Minke Whales and dolphins. The crew were fantastic and were very supportive of helping the person with the busted wing back into the boat (the winning technique involved being grabbed under the armpits and heaved up onto the duckboard in a 2 metre swell)!

  • Cape Range National Park

    June 13, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Spent the day exploring the National Park coastline. We did a couple of drift runs at Turquoise Bay where you could drift over the reef with the current pushing you along parallel to the shore at quite a speed - no swimming required and lots of interesting fish to see.Read more

  • Manta Ray Tour

    June 14, 2021, Indian Ocean ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Another early start for the 2 hour drive down to Coral Bay for our next adventure. We began with a snorkel over the reef and the highlight was observing a large 'cleaning station' where all types of marine life congregate to have small Cleaner Wrasse fish eat parasites and dead tissue off larger fishes' skin. A beautiful green sea turtle was on the ocean floor and a grey reef shark cruised through to have its mouth cleaned by smaller fish. We then moved on to look for Manta Rays and we had a couple of fantastic dives where we had a fantastic chance to get up close to these graceful creatures gliding through the clear waters. The excitement continued back on the boat when we spotted a Dugong (fascinating creatures that feed on sea grasses) and then a couple of Tiger Sharks. Rudi was able to do a quick dive with one of them which he found exhilarating.... Lara lounged up on the fly deck in the sun watching the show from above! We returned to the reef for another snorkel through a maze of coral including the vibrant blue tip stag coral and were once again amazed by the diverse and spectacular marine life. It was another truly memorable day with an incredible crew.Read more

  • Yardie Creek

    June 15, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

We drove back down to Cape Range National Park and explored some beautiful bays including North Mandu which was covered in smooth pebbles in lovely soft sunset colours - the sound of the ocean on these pepples was just beautiful. We continued down to Yardie Creek and were captivated by the Black Flanked Rock wallabies out on the sheer rock face of the spectacular gorge.Read more

  • Wooramel River Retreat Homestead

    June 17, 2021 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Arrived at Wooramel Homestead after a 5 hour drive, just as the sun was going down. Jumped into bathers and raced to the thermal pools where we caught the last rays of sunshine shining on our faces as we soaked in the gloriously warm water with a glass of Prosecco in hand - paradise for me! This working station of 356000 acres was a real highlight - our accommodation was great, the beautiful river bed had large pools of water in it and was lined with large gum trees. The real highlight though were the thermal pools filled with the high mineral content artesian waters of 33 degrees. We spent all evening soaking and also returned to watch the sunrise the following morning.Read more
