    Footy rail trip

    13 de marzo de 2025, Inglaterra ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

Well early start today, 05:30 from Preston to Euston then st pancras for Eurostar to Amsterdam 😎 all's good sat in st pancras waiting 11:04 to Rotterdam. We've had to re book tonight's hotel because Billy had booked us in for yesterday 🫣
Well I've stopped in some dives and this one takes the biscuit, just trying to find somewhere for a beer and food that's not in the red light zone 😵‍💫

  • The stadium

    15 de marzo de 2025, Inglaterra ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

The first thing you notice is the name of the stadium: Karl Liebknecht Stadion. Liebknecht was a fervent antiwar demonstrator and member of the Social Democratic Party for Potsdam, who together with Rosa Luxemburg went on to found the Spartacus League, a Marxist revolutionary movement organised during the First World War. Like almost every football club in and around Berlin, SV Babelsberg 03, (null-drie), are happy to let their identity define them. The team in the fourth-tier of German football – the Regionalliga Nordost – are famously left leaning, anti-fascist and anti-racist.

The liveliest section of the crowd wears that reputation on its sleeve. For the first few minutes couldn't see match for flares and banners, even missed the first goal 😵‍💫 the flags flying all commemorate Liebknecht, Che Guevara, Trotsky and other famous revolutionary figures litter the thousand-strong Nordkurve, while there are loads of anti-fascist and anti-homophobia banners on the advertising hoardings. The coordinated singing and bouncing soundtracks during the game are something sadly missing at north end and although a lower division club the atmosphere is electric, helped by the ability to stand and have a beer during the game
    3-1 final score

  • Homeward bound

    17 de marzo de 2025, Bélgica ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Well up for a short stroll around the midi area then train home at lunchtime. Nice breakfast time for a bit of shopping now sat in Eurostar terminal.

What a good trip home, really impressed with all the European railways, but Avanti let's it down on London to Preston run with their tired and tiny rolling stock, chalk and cheese, roll on nationalisation 🤞Leer más
