    Jakarta

    February 17, 2016 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Arrival in Jakarta after an early morning!
A day and a half in this crazy busy city is enough to get a feel of the place! The traffic is intense, the contrasts are clearly visible. But the people are friendly! Give them a smile, and they will love it!
Took the train to the old town, then got lost and we ended up in slums. We walked for a veeery long time, but it was all very interesting!
We also stopped in Cafe Batavia, for a cup of delicious Javanese coffee!
Stayed in a great hostel, with a rooftop bar, and very cheep beer during happy hour, so a good end to a busy day!

  • Cianjur

    February 17, 2016 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

Few days of well deserved peace after the madness of Jakarta!
We took a bus to Cianjur, a small town in the rural area of West Java. There, we were able to enjoy the local culture, through a visit to a fish farm, a hike through the jungle in a national park, and a hike through rural villages, with a swim in a waterfall!Read more

  • Jogjakarta

    February 20, 2016 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

We took a very scenic train to get to the cultural centre of Java: Jogjakarta.
I think it's an amazing place, the central part has lots of very sweet little backstreets. We were also there during some Chinese new year celebrations and we witnessed Malioboro Street (the main street) packed with thousands of people, watching the parade of colourful dragons, dances, etc.
Two major temples are also reachable from Jogja: Borobodur, a stunning 1200 years old Buddhist temple and Prambanan, the main Hindu temple remaining on Java.
On our second day in Jodja, we took an arts course and tried out some Batik (Indonesian painting technique). Although I wasn't very good at it!

  • Mount Bromo

    February 23, 2016 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Very long drive (13 hours!) from Jogja to the incredible mount Bromo.
We arrived in the evening in the nearby mountain village of Cemoro Lawang. We quickly went to bed as we needed to start hiking up at 3am to see the sunrise!
In the very early morning, we set off to hike up for an hour until we reach the view point. And about half an hour later, the most incredible sunrise I have ever seen. The colours were magical. The view around Mount Bromo became visible, and we were able to witness a surreal landscape, of three small volcanos in the foreground, and the highest volcano in Indonesia, mount Semeru, erupting in the background.
Later, we walk back down and through the amazing little village of Cemoro Lawang, in the daylight.
I would definitely come back to this place, it is incredible!

  • Kawa Ijen

    February 24, 2016 in Indonesia ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

After having climbed Mount Bromo, we headed towards yet another highlight of Java, 7 hours drive away: Ijen volcano. The crater is full of sulfur and every day, dozens of sulfur miners climb up the very steep hill to the top of the volcano, then down the crater for another 800 metres. There, they collect between 80kg to 100kg and carry it all the way out of the crater, and down the mountain!
We set off around 1am to aim to get into the crater while it was still dark. Sulfur masks compulsory! There, we were also able to enjoy the blue fire, only visible at night, created by sulfur and gaz! No good photos though...
But when we climbed back up we were able to enjoy yet another beautiful sunrise, and a stunning view of both the crater and the blue lake, as well as the surrounding view!

  • Pemuteran

    February 25, 2016 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

From Ijen, got dropped off at the harbour. There, I found my way to the ferry to Bali. I then took the local minibus until Pemuteran, a little town by the beach.
There, I stayed in the nicest guesthouse, with the nicest owners! People in Bali really are incredibly friendly and smiley!
In my 3 days there, I dived for the first time, and did my open water diving course! On my third day, we dived on Menjangan Island, one of the best diving sites in Bali, and it was incredible! Saw so many fish, corals, and a turtle! Definitely one of the coolest things I've done!
I also explored a bit inland, as the mountains are very close, and I had a great view of the bay from up there!

  • Munduk

    February 29, 2016 in Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

I took a public minibus from Pemuteran, followed by a scooter, to make my way to the very quiet Munduk in the mountains! This is when you realise Bali is tiny in comparison to Java, it took me less than an hour and a half!
There, on my first day, I hiked around the cutest mountain villages, saw some impressive waterfalls, and definitely got lost a couple of times...
The next day, a guide took me to lake Tamblingan. We hiked around the lake through an incredible rain forest, and then took a local canoe back across it!

  • Ubud

    March 2, 2016 in Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Very few days in Ubud, cultural heart of Bali!
Arrived after a 2h motorbike ride from Munduk. I then set off, accompanied by a couple of very nice other travellers, for a walk around the rice fields around Ubud. So strange: you are in Ubud, you take a side street perpendicular to the main Street, and after a few minutes you are in rice fields! That afternoon, we also went to the monkey forest, a sanctuary where you can walk around with loads of monkeys! My bright green bag was very popular, and several monkeys climbed on my back!
The next day, I did the most amazing cooking class. We cooked 7 dishes, and my tummy was very happy. After that, a very sweaty bike ride (only uphill to get there!) to tanga lalang rice paddies, the most amazing and impressive labyrinth of rice fields! The bike down was quite enjoyable!
And to finish off a busy few days, I went white water rafting on my third day! A day full of fun and excitement!

  • Nusa Tenggara

    March 6, 2016 in Indonesia ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

A ferry got me from Bali to Lombok. I got very sunburnt. I hate the sun...
There, I took a three day boat cruise all the way to Flores. Such an incredible three days! I got to meet some amazing, really fun people, sleep on the deck of an awesome boat, go skimming in some incredible turquoise water, snorkelling around some beautiful beaches, and of course eat some delicious food! That boat was coooool!
Definitely a highlight of my trip!!!

  • Labuanbajo

    March 10, 2016 in Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

    Labuanbajo and Komodo national park!!!
We saw some Komodo dragons, on Komodo Island, the biggest lizards on earth (more than 2m long!) and can only be seen on Komodo Island! And I'm quite relieved they seemed more interested in napping than chasing us away!
From Labuanbajo, I then diid three more days of diving. Wow! I saw some incredible marine life: so many manta rays (huge 4m wide rays!), so many sharks, turtles, countless colourful fish, coral, and other creatures! One of the best places to go diving! And, I am now an advanced diver! :)

  • Kuta

    March 13, 2016 in Indonesia ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

After a few days in paradise land, I took a flight from Labuanbajo, back to Bali, to start my long trip back home...
A very touristy last stop in Kuta, where I only spend one afternoon, but it was enough!
The beach is full of surfers during the day (or people wanting to sell you surf lessons...), but in the evening, you can witness an amazing sunset, in peace, with some beautiful colours!
    Bali, I will be back!!!
