    With our one day on Santa Cruz we decided to spend it visiting the Darwin Research Centre, a biological research facility operated by the Charles Darwin Foundation. It was really interesting learning about the history of the Galápagos Islands and the conservation efforts that have made and continue to make a huge difference to the unique flora and fauna on these islands. Also fascinating learning about all the different species of Galapagos Tortoises and what differentiates them from one another. We sadly realised the hostel we were staying at on the island, La Mirador de Solitario George, was actually named after the last known Pinta Tortoise, who passed away in 2012 marking the extinction of his species.Read more
