14/8 Isla Isabela

This morning we were picked up from our accom at 7:30 for our Los Túneles tour. The boat ride was about an hour, and we unfortunately sat on the ocean side so we got absolutely saturated from the swell, should’ve worn our wetsuits 😅 The usual entry point to Los Túneles was deemed unsafe by the captain so we looped around the back instead (for the best, even sal was nervous!) Thankfully Los Túneles itself is very protected from the swell, and no wetsuit needed as the water was nice and warm.

Before we began our snorkel we went for a little walk around the site. Thousands of years ago, lava flowed from Isabela’s volcanoes into the ocean. As the outer layer cooled, tunnels and hollow structures formed beneath the surface. Over time, parts of these tunnels collapsed, leaving behind a network of arches, bridges, and lava platforms rising above turquoise water. These formations create shallow channels and natural pools that shelter an incredible diversity of marine life.

On our snorkel, we saw turtles galore once again, including some huge ones! We were very very lucky right at the beginning of our snorkel to be joined by 3 little Galapagos Penguins 🥹 They were SO CUTE. As we ventured through the tunnels we spotted lots of white-tip sharks resting inside the dark caves, and even a little baby black-tip swam by.
