  • Drive to Burra

    3 juli 2023, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Long day today and a bit of a slow start with a sleep in and morning run along the Murrumbidgee. Stopped for lunch by Lake Benanee and in Paringa to see some silo art but otherwise it was mostly a day of driving. Staying at Bon Accord Hotel in Burra - free camping when you eat at the hotel.Läs mer

  • Remarkable walk

    4 juli 2023, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

A shorter drive today so we made a detour into Mt Remarkable National Park and did the narrows walk through Alligator Gorge. It was well worth the effort as we hopped across stepping stones in the creek with red rocky cliffs towering above us on either side. After the walk we had a short drive to Stony Creek bush camp where we set up camp and for the first time put up our hammock. Nice to have some relaxing time with some big driving days ahead of us.Läs mer

  • Wilmington to Ceduna

    5 juli 2023, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Another big driving day from Wilmington to Ceduna. The views after we dropped down the foothills towards Port Augusta were a surprise and a delight before a pretty uneventful drive the rest of the way.

We arrived at Ceduna, set up our tent and then walked out to the end of the jetty before picking up supplies for the Nullarbor which will make up most of the next three days of travel. We grabbed some great fish and chips from the Ceduna Oyster Barn.

  • First bight of the Nullarbor

    6 juli 2023, Australien ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

It was a rough start to the day after high winds and rain set in overnight in Ceduna making sleep difficult and packing up the tent very unpleasant.

After a while both the weather and our moods brightened up, we saw Australia's largest windmill, paid for a great view at the head of the bight, got an even better one of the sea cliffs later on for free and then arrived at Koonalda homestead to make camp for the night.

It was still very windy so after one aborted attempt in the open we moved our tent next to an old cottage to use it as a wind break. A walk to see a blowhole, dinner and then a stunning sunset over the plain. A much better finish to the day than the start.

  • G'day to WA

    7 juli 2023, Australien ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

We woke up at Koonalda station to a stunning sunrise and for the first time a dry tent - what a luxury!

After breakfast and pack up we were on our way to the border and then first stop in Ceduna to see the old Telegraph station that was claimed by the moving sand dunes.

After this it was a loooong day of driving, including the 90 mile straight, before arriving at our stop for the night at a free camping spot at Fraser Range.

We drove up the back and found a beautiful spot surrounded by Norseman gimlet trees with rusty red bark, cooked some dinner and settled in for the night. We kept an ants nest at bay with some ash sprinkled around the outside of our tent. The stars were stunning again with a late moon rise.

  • Esperance

    8 juli 2023, Australien ⋅ 🌩️ 17 °C

Our last night camping in the tent was in Esperance. We started the day with a stop at a Cafe and Thai restaurant in Norseman for brunch, I had an omelette, Jessica had a hotdog, Lewys had chicken tenders and Kelly had a Thai curry!

We arrived early afternoon into Esperance and set up the tent at a new Caravan Park right on the foreshore. Jessica and Lewys jumped into the pool for a swim, we grabbed some supplies and then headed to the brewery for dinner.

Unfortunately the brewery was hosting a blues festival with a substantial cover charge for entry. Jessica was challenged by the sudden change in plan but we ended up having an amazing seafood dinner at Fishface in town instead.

We woke up with a dry tent, packed up and headed off for a long drive to Margaret River.

  • Family time

    12 juli 2023, Australien ⋅ 🌬 18 °C

After the long drive from Esperance to Witchcliffe we spent the next four nights at cousin Bec's house with mum and dad, and for the last three nights Annwen, Ashley and Nathan. We caught up with Lyn, Maira and Billito, who were over from Mexico, Taid, Allan, Ella and on our last night Myfanwy, Jasper and Finn.

Some of the highlights were Nathan playing the piano at Taid's retirement village, the local Cafe in Witchcliffe and lunch at Brewhouse.

We then drove past Bunbury on our way up to Fremantle where we spent one final night in a house before driving North in mum and dad's camper trailer.

  • Pinnacles and Lake Thetis Stromatolites

    14 juli 2023, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

Our first day on the road with the camper trailer, we made our way out of Perth with a first stop at the Pinnacles. Neither Jessica or Lewys were as excited as Kelly and I about the stunning scenery but it was amazing.

A quick stop at Lake Thetis to see some stromatolites and then we drove on to Jurien Bay for our first night camping in the trailer.

  • Kalbarri Loop Walk

    16 juli 2023, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

We stayed two nights in Kalbarri so we would have a day to spend in Kalbarri National Park. We did the 8km Loop Walk which was just stunning. The scrambling along cliffs by the Murchison River was a highlight but did push Jessica outside her comfort zone, she made it around and in hindsight enjoyed the walk and was proud of her effort. We might not have made it without a bag of party mix lollies that were carefully doled out at each 500m distance marker.Läs mer

  • Coral Bay

    20 juli 2023, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

After arriving in Coral Bay we set up the camper trailer at the caravan park and the kids took off to the bouncy pillow while Kelly went for a run.

Our Manta Ray tour was cancelled due to a big swell but we managed to book in for the following day before we drove to Exmouth. Instead we did some snorkelling at Bill's Bay and then went down to the beach for sunset.Läs mer

  • Manta Ray tour

    21 juli 2023, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Unfortunately, no Manta Rays on the tour, but some amazing snorkelling including a turtle, reef sharks and lots of coral and tropical fish.

Lewys was overwhelmed by the deep water and decided to stay on the boat, but Jessica embraced the experience, even swimming over reef sharks as they were getting cleaned at the cleaning station.Läs mer

  • Whale shark tour

    23 juli 2023, Indian Ocean ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

What an amazing day, two swims each with two different whale sharks, two great reef snorkels, three humpback whales putting on an amazing show and a hammerhead shark swimming past the boat.

Jessica just did one swim with the whale sharks but did both snorkels and Lewys stayed on the boat but saw the whalesharks, humpbacks and hammerhead.

After we got back to Exmouth we wrapped up the day with some great pizzas, craft beer, cider, and live music at Whalebone Brewery.

  • Yardie Creek and Cape Range NP

    24 juli 2023, Australien ⋅ 🌬 23 °C

We drove from Exmouth to Cape Range National Park for a boat tour around Yardie Creek. We saw lots of black footed rock wallabies and learnt about history of the area.

After the boat trip we walked along the gorge to a lookout and then stopped off at Turquoise Bay for a snorkel on the way back to Exmouth.

On our final day in Exmouth we drove to Charles Knife Canyon for a walk but the road was closed part way up so we headed back into town for icecream instead.

  • Cheela Plains Station

    26 juli 2023, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

At the end of our stay in Exmouth Lewys declared it the best place on earth and announced that he would be moving there to live as soon as possible.

Our next stop was Cheela Plains Station. It was a great spot to stay with the camp sites in a circle around a big grassy patch where the kids could play, a big rocky hill with great views next to the campsite and a walking trail out to a natural cave.

Through luck rather than planning we were at Cheela Plains for their campfire grilled burger night. A couple of ladies sat down next to us for dinner and Kelly asked them how long they were staying for, it turns out it was the station owner and her mother in law. It was interesting to hear about their life on the station and running the station stay business alongside the farm.

  • Tom Price

    27 juli 2023, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

On our way to Karijini we stopped off at Tom Price for supplies and for a tour of the Rio Tinto iron ore mine. The logistical and engineering undertaking of the mine was pretty incredible, with most of a mountain having been removed, and the corresponding environmental impact quite sobering.

After the tour we did grocery shopping at what might just be the world's greatest Coles. Almost everything seemed to be on special and there was an amazing range of food. It was just as well because we had the next four nights camping at Dales campground in Karijini National Park where we needed to be fully self sufficient incuding all our food and drinking water.
