  • Journey and arrival in Portsmouth

    30 maggio 2025, Inghilterra ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Lazy start with a walk around the lake and bacon sandwiches. Ery long day with lots of road works. Arrived at Portsmouth. Was checking out where the ferry port was and got stuck in the lane to check in 😜 so we checked in and watched a cruise ship leaving port whilst we had a drink.
On board and had a lovely supper in the commodore lounge

  • At Sea

    31 mag–1 giu 2025, Bay of Biscay ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

After leaving Portsmouth we got some great pictures of the coast line. Woke to a lovely day following the French coastline past Brest to the last outcrops rocks and light houses into open sea. We sat in the sunshine and then after dinner went to watch the sunset and Jim spotted 3 Northern Bottlenose whales - which the lovely marine biologist said were the rarest and deepest diving whale in the oceanLeggi altro

  • Camping Caravaning Oyambre

    1–3 giu 2025, Spagna ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Arrived at the campsite, got booked in and set up on our pitch. Weather is a little changeable so after a beer and tortilla in the bar on site we went for a walk to the beach. First Swim of the holiday and water a little warmer than Scotland but not a lot 😜
We had intended just having a drink in the bar at the beach but had a gorgeous late lunch with Octopus Galician style, grilled squid ( chipirones a la plancha) croquetas (ham and cheese) and a bonus plate of mussels in a tomato sauce. Washed down with local beer and Albariño white wine. Walked back and chilled at the van and another dip in the pool, Good day !

  • Grizzly Mizzly day

    2 giugno 2025, Spagna ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Started slowly as was chucking it down. Had Breakfast of BBQ sausages and did some planning for the next 3 days. The weather is to be so bad on the coast we have decided to head inland tomorrow to chase the sun. We will have a driving day tomorrow to Salamanca whilst it is wet.

By mid morning the rain had cleared enough to go into Comillas. We visited El Capricho De Gaudi which was a bit wacky. We then wandered through the town but it was siesta time so everything was shut.

We found our way to the harbour and a cafe that was open for a few more seafood tapas.
We walked back the 6.5 Km along a very lovely hilly coast path. Had a drink at the campsite bar and finished the day with some more drinks whilst chatting to other travellers, swapping tips and places to see.
Wished we could retire now as most seem to have been here
    for several weeks 😜

  • Salamanca chasing the sun

    3–6 giu 2025, Spagna ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Today has been a travel day 260 miles south of the coast.
Passed some vineyards and many mountains and big churches along the way.
Stopped off in Palencia for fuel and shopping. Look at those hams for sale in the supermarket !
We then stopped for a picnic French style with table cloth and cakes !
We have arrived at the campsite - it’s a bit rough and ready but has a nice pool and bar on site along with a bus into the city. We will go and explore tomorrow and for now Jim is having a snooze after a well earned beer and I am finishing my book with a rum and coke !

  • Salamanca visit

    4 giugno 2025, Spagna ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Caught the bus from the campsite into the city today. Found a traditional market with meat, fish, hams. Cheeses and fruit.
We then had a coffee in the main square to chat about what we wanted to see in the city.

Looked at the amazing library that was covered in pilgrim scallops shells. We then climbed the towers to the top of the cathedral and watched the nesting storks. What a view from the top of the city.

Next was the art nouveau museum which had some amazing peices of deco style figurines, glassware, creepy pottery dolls and an exhibition on dance. My fav was the glass roof which really should not have taken a photo of but couldn’t help myself.

After all that it was a late lunch which was a 4 course menu del dia. Some great new flavours and foods from the region washed down with wine and beer and a coffee for only €50 amazing!

Wandered back to the bus and a bit of planning for our next stage and a swim before a drink in the bar.

  • What a day

    5 giugno 2025, Spagna ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

So after a slow start we decided to see Salamanca in a different way by bicycle.
We set off from the campsite and followed the river Tormes though gorgeous parkland and over bridges. We passed the sights we had seen yesterday and out the other side of the city.
On the way back we stopped for drinks and some lunch, We cycled 25 km.
Back to the campsite to cool down in the swimming pool as the thermometer hit 30 deg.
After showers and a couple of drinks to re hydrate we caught the bus into Salamanca for dinner.
Drinks in the square to people watch. Dinner was in a traditional restaurant with starters from the 1980’s which I would have made at college but amazing baby meats ( suckling pig and milk fed lamb )
Now to find a taxi as missed the last bus !

  • Dam !

    6–8 giu 2025, Spagna ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Traveled from Salamanca to the border of Spain and Portugal just into the Duero valley.
Jim wanted a break from city’s and some nature. The drive was lovely through crops and cattle country with Storks on most available spots to nest.
Drove over the Almendra Dam which was spectacular the photos whilst driving down not do it justice.

The site is basic and unorganised as they are preparing for a first communion party tomorrow. The pool is shut so we cycled down to the reservoir for a swim and fish 🐟 it was so warm !

Back to the site and we did some washing and then went for a beer with a lovely German couple and talked travel.

  • Bodegas, cycling and Lake dipping

    7 giugno 2025, Spagna ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

We had some great bread still warm from the bakery for breakfast.
Planned our day as it was going to be a hot one.
Cycled 6 miles to the local village Fermoselle which is known for its Bodegas ( wine cellars ) We sampled vino blanco, tinto and Moselle wines and as we were cycling and I had to carry the wine back bought a couple of bottles for with dinner.
Caught the supermarket just as it was closing and bought some fantastic steaks for dinner on the BBQ .
Settled into a lovely local bar for a couple of drinks and tapas. We loved to people watch as it was a real local bar full of local villagers who were celebrating it was the weekend.
After a 6 mile cycle up hill back to the site we stopped a little bar for rehydration and they had a first communion celebration going on - the boy thought he was the bees knees but looked like Michael Jackson in his white suit and shoes. All the adults and children were dressed to the nines!
After cool down we cycled down to the lake again for a dip to cool down even further.
Back at the site relaxed and when it cooled down Jim cooked the steaks on the BBQ and we sampled our wine we bought earlier.
    Off to Portugal tomorrow !!

  • Portugal

    8 giugno 2025, Portogallo ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

Got up and packed the van. We popped back to the bodega of yesterday and bought some more wine to bring home as it was so good.
Travelled to our next site crossing over the border of Portugal and Spain a few times and another amazing Dam which was over the Duero river. We saw a griffin vulture and a spectacular golden oriole bird whilst traveling.
A van picked a fight with our vans mirror and won smashing the casing and scratching the body 😱
Oh well no was hurt and it can be fixed.
Arrived at the site which is in the middle of no where and enjoyed a relaxing afternoon by the pool and a traditional meal from this part of Portugal.

  • Hot Hot Hot !

    9 giugno 2025, Portogallo ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Gorgeous day, breakfast at the van listening to the birds and people watching and then got an uber into Bragança and was dropped off at castelo de Braganca.
Walked around the walls and the medieval village. Lots of great views.
Was so hot ( reached 35 deg ) had to stop for rehydration and lunch smelt so good we had that too 😂 Restaurant was in a great spot by the castle. Jim had veal and I had Boar Francesinho which was ok - wished I had Jim’s veal but luckily he shared.
Uber back to the campsite and then a swim or 5 to cool down. We were still full from lunch so dinner was an ice cream and a Portuguese custard tart 💕 back to Spain tomorrow and a long travel day back to the base of the Picos mountains and a site we stayed on last year.

  • Long drives, BBQ’s and Storms

    10–12 giu 2025, Spagna ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Got up packed up and hit the road. We left Portugal as it was too dam hot lol never happy.
Long travel day - stopped for brunch at a petrol station, which actually was really tasty.

After stopping for shopping we arrived at our fav site Cabuérniga Camping ( for those we have talked to about this site the one with the 5 star bathrooms ) We took a wander down to the river with thunder stating to Ecco around the mountains. Headed back and had a couple of drinks in the bar and then set up for a BBQ using the on site BBQ’s - Prawns with garlic and chilli followed by rabbit in sage, garlic and paprika. We got the prawns eaten and most of the rabbit when the heavens opened and the storm truly hit. Legged it back to the van and now drinking the rest of the red wine and feeling thankful that we will get a good nights sleep tonight. As temperatures have dropped from 35 to a 20ish 💕🥰Leggi altro

  • Into the valley

    11 giugno 2025, Spagna ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

After the storms from last night woke up to a hot day again with the sun shining.
Jim had found a walk from the campsite to the cascades in the valley. We set off on the walk expecting to be along the road however we discovered a lovely gentle sloping upwards path along the valley floor with meadows, wild flowers and the sound of cowbells along the path. We did however find some strange wool wrapped oddities tied to trees along the path ( see the photos ) not sure what they were lol 😂

When we reached the waterfalls (cascades) I was so glad I had carried my swimmers and got to do a bucket list dip under the waterfalls in clear cold water.
The heat intensified as we made our way back along the path with the sound of thunder all around. We managed to get almost back to the village and that beer we had been imaging for a few miles when the heavens opened. We had to take shelter in a bus shelter as the first bar was closed. As the rain calmed we managed to find our way to an open bar and enjoyed the beer. The rain and thunder was right over us by this point and we did think we would be there until the bar stated serving pizza at 7 but took a chance and walked quickly back to the site and luckily escaped getting a soaking.
Dinner was a casa Helen and Jim at the van with garlic herbs and lemon pork chops and much needed veg.

  • Up the mountain pass !

    12 giugno 2025, Spagna ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Lazy chilled out start to the day and we thought we would just pootle about on the bikes - nope Jim decided we would cycle through the valley omitting to tell me it would actually go very steeply uphill. He had spotted a view point with a cafe half way up a mountain pass. Was just about to give up and turn back and Jim was checking how far we had to go and I spotted a car park ahead and that it would be safer to stop there - yippee it was the bar! Whilst we stopped and had a drink a couple off the site arrived in their van so we had drinks and chat with them.
Very fast decent - Jim got to 72 km an hour and I was a more conservative 46 km behind him.

We had a drink in the bar at the bottom and met more neighbours off the site.
We had booked dinner in the same place as we have eaten before so had amazing beef and good red wine,
Off to a campsite about 30k outside of Bilbao tomorrow for our last night but have thoroughly enjoyed our relaxation and chill time here at Cabuérniga Camping and we will
    Be back 💕🥰

  • Making the most of last day

    13–14 giu 2025, Spagna ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Packed up after breakfast and said our goodbyes to the Swiss couple on the site who we think will be on the same site as us tonight. We also swapped penguin accounts with Barry and Waltraud who we had a fantastic dinner with the night before and look forward to following each other’s adventures and hopefully our paths will cross again.

Arrived at Camping Arenillas just outside Bilbao for our last night. Campsite is really tightly packed but right on the beach. We set up and caught the bus into Castro Urdiales which was a great town on the sea. After a walk along the Victorian sea front we found a place by the sea selling BBQ Sardines and fresh tuna with good wine and beer.
After a little walk to the end harbour wall we stopped for a drink and bus back.

We found a great surf bar at the entrance to the campsite and settled in for a few drinks and some dinner watching the sunset. Wandered back to the van and found our Swiss friends parked directly behind us so with Google
Translate we enjoyed a glass of wine and a good chat.

Bed time now and off to the port at 10am for the start of a long journey home.
