Slight panic as I realised I don't have the card I booked the hotel with on me except for on my phone. Oh well I'm sure it'll be fine.

Slight panic the second: I have to many liquids. They have to be seen to 'test' my sun lotion to allow me to go through with all of my metrosexual supplies such a beard tinter and aftersun.

I'm also pretty sure I bumped into Anna Maxwell Martin in the queue, she and her hub (who I've since learned is a famous director!) were running late.

So this took a funny turn, I get to the boarding gate (C52) and not long after I take a seat, the announcement says "can these 4 people come to the desk with all your belongings please.... ... And Peter Woolley". Uh oh, maybe those extra toiletries have come back to bite me?

Turns out they do spot checks and I was one of the lucky 4 woo. The two very lovely ground staff search my luggage and shoes and one notices from my passport in from Walsall, so yay I've made friends!

Anyway, I get to board first, I think I'm literally the first passenger on the plane?!!

And so begins a very uneventful 9hr50! The extra leg room is amazing, I doubt I'll get that lucky on the way home.

My two seat mates for the flight were very nice. A little French lady on my right who didn't move the entire flight and whose husband left her to be in the premium economy 😬. And to my left a very polite British guy.

I feel like I need to tell future Pete this as a lesson. DO. NOT. DRINK. ALCOHOL. OR. FIZZY. DRINKS. WHEN. YOU. FLY!!!

I start to feel a bit gurgly as the food arrives and I stupidly opt for red wine. I knew the moment I tasted it this was not going to be good.

Apart from feeling pretty unpleasant from the wine/piri piri chicken/pretzel combo, it was great and I slept a great deal. Even managed about 20 pages of my new book 'look both ways' that Dan is about to complete.

Grabbed a very quick (if not terrifying) taxi to the hotel and checked in! After getting my things unpacked I bravely decide I need to hit the town and find something to eat. I am very nervous at this point, I have no idea where I'm going, I have a vague idea of how to pay/tip, but more than that I need some food to settle my stomach from that plane ride, so I just play a bit of a left/right game.

So many people in Halloween fancy dress already! I finally stop at a sports bar who are still serving food at 9pm and I order shrimp and grits. This is exactly what I needed!!!!

Feeling much better, I ask the waiter where to go for some jazz and whiskey, and he suggests Frenchman Street, so that's where I shall go!Læs mere

Right! Here we go, a lovely sleep last night and I'm ready to roll! Breakfast went down well, then decided to take the streetcar to the garden district! I get my ticket and walk to the stop, but then I get very confused by the map and can't find which stop I need to catch it from. Very fortunately, a group of 3 lovely girls (Maria, Sarah and Nicole) help me out and get chatting and say I can tag along with them if I like. At this point I can't believe my luck that I can default to my usual 'follow what other people do' mode, so I do! They suggest a good walking tour of the garden district which I book for the following morning, so I then head into the French Quarter with them! Good food, my first taste of alligator, and a very interesting absinthe cocktail. These guys are great!!!Læs mere
