Bit more productive today, whilst we still did a lot of driving south, we squeezed in a trip to Toledo, a UNESCO ancient city on a hill near Madrid. Lots of history and narrow streets. We managed to see a few sites and wander around before the storm hit again. We holed up in a cathedral whilst the lightning and thunder boomed overhead but then made a break for it back to the van. Treated ourselves to McDonald’s then trucked on. More heavy rain and lightning which eventually cleared as we neared our overnight stop, Valdepeñas. We saw lots of flooding and read afterwards that the mayor of Madrid issued a red weather warning and told the people to not go out! This region is renowned for its olive oil production so todays plan is to buy olives and olive oil. If we can pick up a new doormat too - even better.
We found our parking spot and walked into the local town, Gary hoping to catch the football. We didn’t find anywhere showing it but looked like the town were celebrating a week of history and wine in the shape of a festival. There seemed to be a gig later that evening in the town square, some local rapper, not starting until 10pm so we didn’t hang about. Had a strategic drink in a bar, practiced some Spanish, ate olives and picked up a domino’s pizza. We ate like royalty today!
    Just pipped 1200 miles today.
