    Day 1: Victorious Festival

    August 25, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Lovely sunny day on the most part, just rained at the last band, Jamiroquai - nothing a bit of dancing wouldn’t cure. Saw a few bands today and a bit of comedy and just a general reccie around.
Blossoms, Charlatans, Leeroy from Prodigy (banging dj set), Friendly Fires (great fun), Jake Bugg, Jamiroquai, also a highlight. Gary and I stuck together all day yet I moved an additional 8 miles? Can only be dancing 😁

    Day 2: Victorious Festival

    August 26, 2023 in England ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Lots of bands again and got some freebies (stickers, drinks). Ran out of non alcoholic beer so Gaz on the water. Free though, bloody over inflated festival prices! No one’s getting drunk! Watched - Julia, Natalie Imbruglia, Divine Comedy, Amyl & the Sniffers (awesome energy), Kasabian, also awesome. Nice easy bus back and sat out with Helen/Boovie for a bit.Read more

    Day 3: Victorious Festival

    August 27, 2023, English Channel ⋅ 🌬 19 °C

Gary’s birthday! Went for a lovely birthday brekkie with Helen/Boovie/Evie then on to the last day of the festival. Bit more low key as no major bands we wanted to see. Saw Hard Fi, The Go! Team, Heather Small, The Enemy, Ben Howard (sadly yawn), Vaccines, Johnny Marr. Great festival, well organised, shuttle buses frequent and toilets not too bad. £6.50/90 a tin of beer though! Had a £17 Greek salad though the curries were better priced. Such a lovely weekend catching up with everyone.
Ready for our next leg of the adventure…

    First day in France

    August 28, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Early ferry from Portsmouth to Caen. Nice and easy. 6 hr journey so took entertainments. They had a quiz on board plus a guy playing guitar. Pierre the Bear for the littlu’ns. drove an hour to Omaha beach, site of (American) d day landings. Museum small but informative, Monument on the lovely sandy beach. Mindblowing to think of the blood shed gone on years before - ‘lest we forget’. FaceTime call with the fam, bit of food shopping then found an Aire to stay. Simple quiet carpark in Port en Bessin, nr Bayeaux, north coast of France. Made dinner at the van then had a little stroll to the port. V quiet all around.Read more

    Mont St Michel

    August 29, 2023 in France ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Slow drive down to Mont St Michel, v similar to St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall. Parked up and walked there though got a shuttle bus back (part of the parking fee anyway). V busy/touristy so didn’t hang about too long, don’t really want to do busy/touristy things too much.
Drove couple of hours south to a lovely campsite just north of Nantes in Nort-sur-Erdre - strategic shower and water refill. Spent the evening trying to plan next couple of days but just really want to head south where it’s warmer as it’s a bit chilly at night so far so not really been sitting out.

    Operation: let’s get south!

    August 30, 2023 in France ⋅ 🌬 20 °C

After a lovely run, shower and relaxing morning we decided to bypass the main town and head a bit further south. The clouds are still loitering plus rain showers, still, may as well be at home! Said goodbye to the cute red squirrels on the site and took a leisurely drive down towards La Rochelle. Up until this point, the scenery is the same as the UK but the last half hour or so changed to more Spain like - white buildings, drier grass, less trees. The roads infrastructure (so far) is quite new and v well maintained. We’re getting the hang of right hand drive driving too though still need the odd prompt. Once we got to La Rochelle there’s an island off the mainland (l'île de Ré), you pay a toll to get over the 2km bridge. We found a defence fort originally dating back to 1600s, the time of Louis XIV and the musketeers history. Then taken over by the Germans during the war. Quite fascinating. Time was getting on then so we needed to find an Aire. Drove a little further south, literally just a field though with lots of other motor homes. Walked in to local town (Angoulins) and had some freshly made pizza, lovely. Once back at site, chatted to our ‘neighbour’ for a bit, German but live in France. 2 lively dogs after my chocolate. Then the sun went down and the mosquitoes came out - we ran for cover! First time we’ve had this so definitely getting more southerly. Were also by water which doesn’t help. Got bitten loads in those short minutes, must put spray on from now and remember to take antihistamine every day. Slept ok though, new mattress is amazing.
Council man came collecting the fee this morning but told me as Eddie isn’t a ‘camping car’ (motorhome in Europe) we didn’t need to pay. Result! Not sure I’m offended though? 😄
Started to rain again and Gary has to do a little work this morning so we’ll head off a bit later and keep going south. To the beach!

    Not much to report

    August 31, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Knowing we wanted to progress southward, we aimed for the Bordeaux region and find something to do in the area. It rained so much on the way down, just as well we were traveling in the end, not much else to do otherwise. As I was driving, I asked Gary to look for a wine tasting/vineyard that I could go to, when in Bordeaux… apparently, he couldn’t find one or they were all booked up! I mean, 272,000 acres of vineyard and the teetotaller couldn’t find one? ;0) Anyway, I found one on our route and when we drove on to the estate, there were signs but no sign of life. Instead, bought some regional wine locally to go with my cheese.
We drove to an Aire in Andernos-les-Bains, a little seaside town west of Bordeaux. Temperatures are rising now so was very warm indeed. Sea looked a bit frothy and grim for a swim so we’ll save that for another time.
A friend lent us Rummikub game for our travels so we played that last night.
The next set of travels should take us over the border in to Spain. Must keep that tan topped up!

    Dune du Pilat

    September 1, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Laundry day! The French have 24 hr laundry machines in car parks - and they are great. We got up super early to get the laundry done, lovely sunrise too. Spot of shopping then on to the dune of Pilat on the west coast nr Arcachon, the tallest sand dune in Europe. 100m high, 2.7km long. Sea on one side and forest on the other. Very impressive. Was a barefoot hike up in 22 degrees. Why people took their dogs up I’ll never know, poor things. Great views. Drove a couple more hours south to Messanges, still along the west coast, along the longest beach in Europe. A lovely campsite for the night. Was actually proper hot for the first time this trip. Realised someone had left my door mat in the car park of the services when he moved the chairs out of the way to make a sandwich! Will have to get a new one as it’s v handy to stop trailing in mud/dust/grass to the van.
Walked 2 miles to the beach but it was worth it. Had an epic swim in the sea, some great surfing waves. Very busy though. Walked back in time for dinner, shower and planning the next leg (España). Was a stormy night last night, lots of lightning and thunder (plus rain) but still warm this morning. Up early to make the most of the day.

    España

    September 2, 2023 in Spain ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

Bit of an anticlimax. We were up and set off early to make some good headway on the drive. We must’ve driven a good 2-3 hours each, sadly in the torrential rain for the most part. So visions of driving into gloriously sunny Spain were quickly dashed. Went through plenty of tolls though thankfully, I had preordered a toll tag for the windscreen that beeps you straight through, v easy.
Once we hit Spain, the landscape did start to change. Straight away there were mountains though what with the rain, it feels like driving around Wales! We eventually came off the main highway and started traveling south through a national park. Very quiet around and lovely scenery/sheer drops/bridges, just a bit wet to get out and explore so we cracked on. Stopped randomly to see a side of the road natural spring water fountain - fuente agua potable - drinking water source, then carried on. Gary had booked a campsite nr Valdeavellano de Tera, Soria in the Rioja región (wine). It’s lovely and peaceful. You can tell they have actually had lots of hot, dry weather as the ground is yellow/dusty. Gary cooked dinner (burgers with an extra egg roll - see photo, don’t ask!) which was delicious. Quiet night in doing more planning, avoiding rain. Not quite the trip I hoped it would be… yet… but I’m sure it will be. Think I’m just missing everyone.
