  • Lost City Trek - Day 4

    February 26 in Colombia ⛅ 18 °C

It's just a routine now; up at 5 am and trekking at 6am . This time we're heading for home. The hike took us alongside a beautiful river and we crossed and recrossed its fast flow. This was a proper adventure but I'm feeling really tired now and will be so pleased when tomorrow arrives and we finally mark the end of the trek. The other trekkers have been great company and together we've experienced something quite special. Andreas and our other two guides have been outstanding.Read more

  • Santa Marta

    February 28 in Colombia ⛅ 29 °C

We remain in Santa Marta for another 3 days before travelling to Cartagena by coach. We guessed the Lost City Trek would be tiring so will be moving to a better hotel today. Our current hotel, Tayromar, is basic by any standards! Today is a day to chill and recover!Read more

  • Santa Marta

    March 1 in Colombia ☀️ 29 °C

" The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta rides up from the Caribbean beaches to Colon and Bolivar peaks at 5,775 metres above sea level. It ascends through narrow valleys with rivers of crystal clear waters,, deserts, rainforests, moorland and perpetual snows. It is surrounded by the Caribbean sea, the dry plains of La Guajira and the grasslands that border the Magdalena and Cesar rivers."

This is where we are now. It is the oldest city in Columbia celebrating it's 500th th year in 2025. Of course, I should make it clear that before Spanish colonialism, the Santa Marta region was a sophisticated, highly developed territory inhabited primarily by the Tayrona people. They built advanced, large-scale stone cities like Ciudad Perdida featuring terraces, roads, and agricultural systems. They were known for skilled goldsmithing and pottery.

  • Santa Marta to Cartagena

    March 3 in Colombia ☀️ 27 °C

We said goodbye to Santa Marta and boarded our coach t. A long journey but so fascinating just watching life flash by as our coach careened towards Cartagena! We made it and accessed our Airbnb without too much fuss. My boots remain in Santa Marta however. They are less than 2 years old but the Lost City Trek finished them off!Read more

  • Getsemani

    March 4 in Colombia 🌬 30 °C

Another interesting area of Cartagena. Great vibe, great food and plenty of Colombian sparkle! We walked around hip Getsemani where laid-back people ( like us!) drink beer and coffee listen to street musicians and snack on grilled arepas from nearby stalls. Vivid murals are also a feature! Katherine also had her haircut here and purchased some lovely jewellery from a very talented woman.Read more

  • Lazy Days

    March 5 ☀️ 30 °C

We finished watching a documentary on Paul McCartney on Amazon that we started last night. An excellent way to begin the day. Showered, dressed then headed for coffee and a large cheese straw at San Alberto coffee house! It's hot outside so naturally I'm feeling slightly sleepy! Finished the day with another tour of the old city! Totally knackered by now so it was all I could do to find somewhere for us to eat. I would recommend Sierpe!Read more

  • Manzanilla Beach near Cartagena

    March 6 in Colombia ☀️ 31 °C

Manzanilla beach is barely a 25 minute walk from our Airbnb. I ate fish empanadas and then we settled down on loungers and when the mood took us, enjoyed plunging into the Caribbean sea for a while. We then walked back into the old town for coffee at Epoca. Decadent behaviour! But in a few days this will change as we travel back to the UK and news of how the US continues to wreak havoc on the rest of us!Read more

  • Return to Bogota

    March 7 in Colombia ☀️ 30 °C

Katherine spent her last few hours of our time here in the museum of Cartagena de Indias whilst I people watched and read my book. Next we head for the airport and Bogota. Safely back in Bogota now and safely in our hotel. We left Cartagena in 30 degree heat with 80% humidity. In Bogota atm it's 14 degrees and showery!Read more

  • Bogota Cycle Tour

    March 9 in Colombia ☁️ 16 °C

It's our last full day in Bogota so we took part in a cycle tour around central Bogota. Very enjoyable and as always we were given a host of interesting information! Another great stop for coffee along the route and chance to watch how the beans were roasted.Read more

  • Landing in Madrid & London

    March 11 in Colombia ☁️ 13 °C

We travelled 8000 Kms overnight and are about to land in Madrid. The first part of our return journey is almost complete. The morning sun is shining and the snow on the distant mountains looks stunning. Slight delay in leaving Madrid for Heathrow but the flight was smooth but we travelled back with a plane load of disconsolate Spurs fans after seeing their team lose 5:2 to Atletico Madrid! Finally we are home in Bath. At last!Read more
