Climbing in Rai Leh , Krabi

    April 10, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Took a boat out to Railay beach to climb. We climbed 4 routes and one of these was the longest route I have ever climbed! The temperature was hot (as per normal) and the tide came in. Both of us had never sweated so much in our lives but it was such an amazing experience!

My arms are jelly right now as we bus to Surat Thani to catch our ferry to Koh Tao.

Surat thani - Thai experience next level

    April 10, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

We arrived after a 3 hr minibus ride from Ao Nang with Phantrip. A short walk brought us to the night ferry pier where we were due to catch our boat at 10pm.

We had dinner at a few street vendors before going to check into our boat…
Wow. An old wooden boat being loaded with supplies with loads of mattresses lining the floor. That’s a Thai sleeper boat for ya!

We checked in and went for dessert at a popular street vendor. Unsure of how to order, we asked a girl standing next to us. She not only showed us what to do but also spoke no English and communicated with us via Google translate. She (was getting dessert take away) helped us understand the menu and recommended two items to us off the menu which were delicious. The street vendor also gave us free ice cream!

Now, we’re packed like sardines on this boat on route to Koh Tao and I’m sweating buckets. Here’s to our next few hours of sleep on board!

    Koh Tao diving!!

    April 11, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Finally! This was a biggie on our trip! Getting our PADI open water diving certification.

We arrived in the early hours of yesterday morning via the overnight boat and spent the day today in the swimming pool learning basics of our scuba equipment.

Tomorrow will be our first open water dive at two locations - Mango bay and The Twins. It’s great to feel so much more comfortable with our equipment and being under water!!

Also, koh Tao had some pretty cool signage going on 😂

    Officially certified divers 🐠 👌🏽

    April 13, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

We spent the last 3 days getting our PADI Open Water certification with @Black Turtle Dive.

It’s official, we can now dive to 18m and rent scuba gear!! Woohoo 🙌🏽

Our confined water skills took place on day 1 which was a full day in a deep hotel pool. Learnt how to assemble our gear, breathe underwater and we had my most dreaded part of the course - the swimming and water treading tests.

Day 2 - dived in Mango bay and Twins. Both off the coast of Koh Tao. Visibility was beautiful and the water was perfect! Today was also Songkran (Thai new year) and everyone had water guns or buckets of water in the street. It’s a water festival so we were saturated to and from the dive store that day!

Day 3 - dived at the Japanese Gardens and Junkyard, also off the coast of Koh Tao. Super nice day! Saw pufferfish and used our confined skills in the open water.

    Motorbike trip to Tanote Bay

    April 15, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We hired a motorbike! First time riding a bike and it was an adventure alright!!

Hired from @DJsMotorbikeRentals Koh Tao for 300 baht for the day. His lower powered bikes were all out so we landed with a midrange. Props to Matt-o for driving for the first time after a 10 minute crash course with the dude from the store.

Made it to Tanote Bay with no issues even though the road was STEEP and windy. The way up was… adventurous! Comical incident where both of us toppled over the bike leaving the bay and heading up the first hill. Not so funny at the time but in hindsight, it was hilarious! I managed to somehow get off the bike first while Matt was half on and suddenly gave it a little too much juice as it slid out from under him!

Tanote bay was beautiful. The fish and coral were incredible and the clarity of the water was a thing of postcards. We had so much fun snorkelling and seeing HUNDREDS of fish. Matt spotted an octopus as well. There was a large jumping rock from which people were rope climbing to the top. That’s a ‘No thank you’ from me.

    Gooooood morning Vietnam 🇻🇳

    April 18, 2023 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

    Yay for tolerable temperatures!

Made it to Hanoi after an early morning flight out from Bangkok and Matt’s funny tummy before our hour long bus ride! Turns out the spicy Tom Yum the night before was equally spicy the next day… A short lived problem though since we wasted no time eating through the Old Quarter in Hanoi for the rest of the day - pho, banh mi, Vietnamese coffee..

Our hotel @AmbassadorHanoi was in a great location with so so so many coffee shops around and street vendors.

Went to the Note cafe after walking around the city at night and left some ‘love notes’ 😂

    Cooking class and city exploring

    April 19, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

We attended a cooking class today with @RoseKitchen and it was such a cool experience. They picked us up from the hotel and took us to a local market to obtain the ingredients before bringing us to the venue. We cooked 4 dishes - banana flower salad, spring rolls, beef pho and Vietnamese egg coffee.

We went for a wander around the city and Matt was fitted for a tailor made suit! After this we visited the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum where his body remains on guard 24/7 (“visited” but really just walked around because no shorts allowed .. 🤷🏻‍♀️). We went to see a Pagoda, watched kids zooming around on tricycle things on the footpath and then had the most underwhelming dinner since the start of our trip (ordered chicken but got served pigeon 🤦🏻‍♀️)

Ha Giang Loop - Day 1

    April 21, 2023 in Vietnam ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Completed our first of 4 days today!

Started in Ha Giang and stopped in Heavens Gate, Lung Khuy cave, Yuong Castle of the H’mong people and ending in Dong Van for the night.

The smoke from the fire season was not ideal for visibility but the mountains still looked spectacular behind the rows and rows of rice terraces in the valley. We did not regret our decision to opt for a guide and EasyRider because those roads are pretty windy and often potholed. Not unusual for the corners to be completely blind and to see a bike, car, suv or even truck coming at you as you round the bend!

Highlight of the day was Matt getting a celebrity treatment by the school kids on a field trip to the Lung Khuy cave. The “oo’s”, “ahh’s”, “omg!” and unsubtle photos the kids were taking (or asked to take) were hilarious! I suppose they’re really not used to white skinned giants roaming amongst them.

After dinner, our guide asked if we wanted to go to a bar and to karaoke. Little did we know he was just following the laid out itinerary to a tee and we thought he actually wanted to go so we said okay. Long story short, we ended up in a basement bar, a beer and vodka-coke on the table, music pumping, two of us as the only patrons and a bedazzled microphone sitting in front of us and our guide who ditched! Fun!
We downed our drink and went for a massage instead..
