    Triacastela

    We reached Galicia today, and arrived in Triacastela, after 26k, at about 12:30. We started our trek at 5:30am, walking straight uphill, for the first 5k, our headlamps lighting our path. Walking in the dark is magical. The stars seem so close, as the full moon that guided our walk two weeks ago, has now decreased to a sliver. The tiny droplets that appeared in the beam of my headlamp, turned into a fog bank, and hid the view below the mountains when we reached the top. Walking in the dark is silent, allowing for things to emerge and transform. It also presents surprises, like the dog who was not sure that he liked me walking by his barn in the dark. After lots of barking, and a momentary standoff, he allowed us to continue on our way. As the sunlight emerged over the mountain range, we shared a cup of coffee and made a toast to the new day, and our last Tuesday, walking the Camino.
    Triacastela , our destination, is a small farming community, with gardens and cattle. The photos show some of the sites, including the cows who don't follow street signs, and the bathroom sign that gives explicit instructions, in case you need them.😂 Love to you all!    Meer informatie

    We reached La Faba, a tiny, green, cool mountain town. I'm hoping this post will upload as the wifi is a little sketchy.... so I'll keep it short. We had a beautiful walk today, with fewer than 200 kilometers to go, with nearly 400 miles walked, without a day off. Still feeling strong, but missing home and my people.Meer informatie

    Villafranca

    Today, after a beautiful, 24k trek through the Cantabrian Mountains, we arrived in Villafranca. This amazing medieval city greeted us with ancient buildings, a cool breeze and an welcoming albergue, where we will spend the night, (see photo below).
    A few words about albergues...
    An albergue is a hostel for pilgrims, or people walking the Camino. It costs from donation- 14 euros for a bed for the night. Albergue Piedra, where we are staying tonight, is one of the nicest so far....(with single beds, without bunks!), but they vary greatly. Here are some examples:
    1. Bathrooms do have showers, but toilet seats, hand soap, paper towels are optional.
    2. Most have bunk beds with a vinyl mattress cover, a sheet optional. This means that you are guaranteed to sweat through your bedding and clothes at night, as air-conditioning or even fans are non existent.
    3. Some have windows, that may or may not open....again, the sweat thing....🥵
    4. We have had between 4 and 50 sleeping in mixed gender dorms each night. Ear plugs help drown out the snoring.
    5. Most have wifi. If not, a bar down the street usually does.
    6. Some have kitchens where we can prepare instant coffee and musceli before we start out at about 5:30am.
    7. All offer scrub sinks and a clothes line or rack, so you can wash your clothes, after showering.
    8. Some offer a communal dinner, where we eat with people from around the world. Last night, French, German, Italian, Spanish and English languages were all represented at our table, with lots of smiling, laughing and varying degrees of understanding. For 10 euros we got a three course meal with wine and bread- delicious!
    All Albergues, although different and unique in their own ways, are always a welcomed site after a long day of trekking!

    Ponferrada

    Early this morning, before the sun came up, we reached Puerto Irago Cruz de Ferro. The tradition is to leave a stone of love and blessings to the great collection. Zayne, Arlo, Avery, and Ezra- My stone was left for you. You are so special and a blessing to me- can you feel how loved you are, even all the way from Spain?❣️A beautiful sunrise lit our way as we descended over 1000 meters through the mountains, and small towns, down steep rocky trails, coffee at a trailer along the path, past a pilgrim retreat, and finally down into Ponferrada. We passed by the newly restored medieval Castle of the Templars, where knights were ordered by King Fernando II, in 1178, to protect Ponferrada. Our trek, today, was technically difficult, nearly 20 miles long, and took seven hours. After taking care of chores at our albergue, we were rewarded with falafels and an IPA at a craft beer street faire! Only 8 more days of walking, the countdown continues!     Foncebadon

    Arrived in Foncebadon, the highest point on the Camino Frances, 1510 meters, (lots of uphill walking today- but not too tough, our legs just seem to do it.😊), and we've begun our 10 day countdown to Santiago! It's beautiful, cool, and relaxing up here.
    A few words about food: in the morning, if the albergue has a kitchen, we fix coffee and musceli in the microwave, if not, we walk about 7k and stop at a bar for coffee, fresh squeezed OJ, and tortilla, (layers of egg, cheese, and potato). Along the walk, we eat fruit, hard boiled eggs, Napolitanos, (croissant with chocolate filling). Upon arriving, we usually have a beer and toast to our efforts of the day. 🍻For dinner, we get the Pilgrim meal offered by the albergue. For 13 Euros, we get a mixed salad or soup, a meat dish, dessert, and wine.     Astorga

    Day 21 on the Camino- we hit 320 miles. It seemed like a good time to reflect on walking: Becoming one with a pack that is now finally adjusted, balanced, a comfortable back hug that carries what I need and provides insulation from the searing Meseta sun; In one day, seeing biome change from endless fields of agricultural products, to oakforest, to farmed pine and into the mountains; In one day, seeing the color of the soil change from limestone white, to pink, to red, to fertile brown; Visiting small, remote villages that visitors rarely see; Boosting the economy of small, rural towns through albergue and shop owners; Getting to personally interact with the local people- receiving well wishes, unsolicited directions and instructions, willingly answering questions, looking up to notice them staring in wonder, then quickly turning their heads, wishing us a Buen Camino even when we are not carrying our packs, (what gives us away?); Sharing stories with a friend as you match each other's stride, or just sharing space in your own thoughts, walking silently; Seeing the colors gradually changing and shadows appearing as the sun emerges from behind a mountain; Viewing the top of an ancient church, in the distance- a landmark that signals the next small village that we will be passing through; The meditative state that comes from just putting one foot in front of the other- providing time and space to consider the small things like the thick wool socks hugging and protecting my feet, the shower at the next albergue that will wash the trail down the drain, to the most important people and things in my life- considering how grateful I am for my family and friends, my home and my community. Walking brings you all to me, as I continue down the road. ❤️ Photos- hops; compost spreader; random rock carving; a cat walks the labyrinth; a roadside vendor; rivers and gardens; less than 300 kilometers to go; a duck points the way; sunflowers lead us to Astorga.     Hospital de Orbigo

    We trekked 20 miles today- cooler weather, feet are little achy, good time to put them up and blog. A little background about Orbigo: in 1432 a woman snubbed a knight. In order for him to be released from his prison of love and restore his honor, he had to joust and break 300 lances, near the Orbigo bridge. He succeed in his task, his honor restored, (get over it, already), and the old Roman bridge still stands, today. Signs seen along the way, since the beginning of the Camino: Castilla is crossed off many signs, signifying Leon's desire for autonomy; cute gender neutral shower/ bathroom signs; art in the park; two who met their demise in the Pamplona, Running of the Bulls; an invitation to my quilting sisters; good rules for any household; mural outside of a school; outside pooping area instructions for humans, you dog owners know the drill 😂; Socrates was right- the second bar WAS better😁; Just check out the name of the second bar!; Isn't it a shame that the free parking is perpetually Full? Oh wait, Full is the name of the hardware store!; An example of how the Basque language is so different from Spanish. I'll SIGN off for now. Love to you all!Meer informatie

    Leon

    Leon- only a 19K trek, (we got to sleep in until 5am), the temperature dropped to 25C with a cool breeze, beautiful city, it was like being on vacation! We dropped our packs at the albergue at about 10am, after our arrival, and toured the city. Something new; ancient; and fascinating to see around every corner, (including a tattoo shop where Marjory had to get some gage earrings- too many pictures of needles,😳, but nice guys; greeting other familiar pilgrims with yells and hugs, and really taking time to enjoy ourselves. When we returned to the Albergue, Daniel, from Germany, made a big green salad with muscles, and invited us to join him. Great conversation and delicious food! After our daily routine of showers, laundry, etc, back to the city central for dinner- burritos, salad, and churros con chocolate. Connected with several more familiar faces, several of whom had family members join them to finish the Camino!❤️ Many are spending an extra day in Leon to take a rest day and enjoy the city. Tomorrow, we will have a challenging 32k trek. Fingers crossed for continued cool weather! Side note- last evening, a BIG man from Germany decided pants were optional, and paraded around the albergue in his tight red chonies, including squeezing around people to sit at the dinner table.😨 Two women from Spain were especially horrified! This morning, as we headed out, into the silent darkness, I asked them: " Donde esta tu amigo? El no esta caminando contigo." We all started laughing uncontrollably, reminded of the crazy situation of the previous night. Marjory- "Pants are not optional- I may have to sit in that chair!"😂Meer informatie

    Mansilla de las Mulas

    On our trek to Mansilla, the meseta is transforming from endless dry wheat fields, to irrigated corn and cattle production. Photos: trees wrapped in afghans along the route, hug back!; Remnants of the old Roman wall fortress that surrounds Mansilla has been reinforced over the years and is 10 feet wide in some parts- 75 percent of the walls still remain; the arch that is the entrance to the city; tower that provides for the city's running water system; another church at daybreak. Finishing the evening comparing feet with a man from London and a woman from Italy. Their feet included bloody infections and blisters with threads running through them to help with drainage. I had nothing to compare to the carnage. So grateful for my strong, healthy feet. We trek to Leon, tomorrow, with the promise of cooler weather. Ojala.😊 Love to you all!Meer informatie

    Berciamos

    Again, we beat the heat, arriving in Bercianos before 12. It was a comfortable walk, but the last 2k seem to take forever. We continue to see many little houses dug into mountain sides. The sign explains how they are used. I guess I can stop looking for Hobbits, along the way. 😁 My picture is at the end of our walk, where I took a nap on the cement, until the albergue opened an hour and a half later. We are staying at a Parochial albergue, run by volunteers, that do not charge, but accept donations. They do not have wifi, so we are sitting in a bar, using their wifi, l enjoying a beer, and watching the Tour de France on TV and locals playing lively games of dominos. Lots of slamming on the tables, and observers yelling. I guess I've been playing dominos the wrong way all these years!😂I've been able to keep in touch with Cyndee- she has been doing some site seeing, plans to continue to bus ahead to Sarria, then walk 10k a day until she reaches Santiago. So glad she is doing the Camino her way.❤️Meer informatie

    Terradillos de los Templares

    Terradillos is a tiny farming community that is a great example of combining the old with the new: structure that is 100s of years old with a modern tractor parked next to it; ancient building made of beams, straw cob, and brick, with a modern structure built onto it, made of plaster with a corrugated metal roof. This ancient gate is the entrance to an ancient church, ( okay, those two match😄); the albergue we are staying at is a mix of the old and the renovated, although we have yet to stay in a place with air conditioning. Our walk today, 26k, was comfortable, although the last 2k always seems to stretch on forever! We arrived at 11:30am, after just under 6 hours of walking, and beat the heat. The thermometer on the side of a building registered 48C- really hot! Shared dinner with Jason from Scotland, who spent time on the Highlander series set. He talked about the props, people walking down streets in full costume, and the authenticity of the set. You would have loved it, Cyndee! Such interesting people on the Camino!     Carrion de los Condes

    Today we hit the 230 mile mark, and are nearly half way through the Camino. We're feeling strong, eating like horses, and although our feet are aching at the end of our walk each day, they are fine and ready to go in the morning! Still seeing interesting sites along the way: a random 20 foot long hand and arm laying in front of a house; door knockers shaped like hands on many doors; and the medival churches that tell dark stories. In Carrion, many of the carvings on the churches are missing their heads. In addition, for a period of time, the Moors demanded 100 Christian maidens be relinquished to them each year. No stories are told about what the Christians did to the Moors...hmmm. So much blood shed in the name of religion. Better get some sleep- love to you all.Meer informatie

    Boadilla

    Photos: 5am start time- selfie with the moon; Boots lined up outside of the albergue; Ancient churches seen in every town we cross; skull and crossbones on the side of a church- no Moors in perpetuity; landscape at the top of a steep grade; another house built into the side of a hill; another cross in the middle of nowhere.
    Communication on the Camino: a French woman mining a headache and vomiting lying on the bed across from me🤮; an Italian man, not able to speak the English conversation around the table, smiled and served each one of us paella and wine; in the cities, a honking car is a positive sign on the camino. It is usually followed by a waving hand, pointing the correct way, opposite of the direction we are traveling. We have never been more than a block off of our path before being redirected by the locals; finger shaking, then "no mijas" then pointing across the street; another Italian man with little English directing another Pilgrim with a question to Marjory and me, referring to us as "The Teachers; listening to two men arguing in Italian about whether DaVinci painted the Mona Lisa in France or Italy; listening to two German men discuss different types of beer, including one variety that is meat flavored, and that it should be served at room temperature; a young Brazilian woman aptly describing the hunched over limping gait seen by people after a long trek as the "Pilgrim walk"; our friends from Korea yelling across the street excitedly waving both hands with big smiles; a woman from the states yelling "Hey Peace Corps",noticing the patch on my pack. She had been stationed in Georgia before being evacuated. We all seem to find a way to communicate!    Meer informatie

    Hontanas

    Before leaving Burgos, we had a communal breakfast with friends from France and Chile. Next, we headed into the high Meseta-, 32K, some steep elevation gain, no shade, with temperatures in the high 90's. There were wheat fields as far as the eye could see, along with this small oasis of trees, and a dwelling cut into the side of a mountain. At one point, a car came driving up from nowhere- it was a team of bombaderos just checking up on pilgrims, offering water and assistance. We were doing ok, but thanked them for the offer! Even though we made it to Hontanas by 1:30, (7 hours of walking), the heat and distance made this one of our toughest days yet. Marjory and I had a beer and toasted our arrival in Hontanas. Later, we had a communal dinner offered by the albergue- salad, paella, and cheese cake- delicious! We met new friends from Denmark, Germany, and Italy. After dinner, we strolled around this tiny town and visited the church and this little structure cut into the side of a hill. What do you think is behind the blue door?! We will be starting our 27K trek, in the same type of terrain, at 5am tomorrow, to try to avoid the heat. We're learning!Meer informatie

    Burgos

    Today our trek ended in Burgos. We traveled through the industrial part of the city, got a little lost trying to find our Albergue, but found our way, thanks to the helpful folks who live here. Today, one man who helped us, dubbed us "Las Tres Valientes!" We decided to keep it. 😄 Burgos is a large city, 180,000 people, with amazing cathedrals and churches, as well as old world charm. Today was Maria's last day on the Camino, before she joins her family in Mexico. To honor her last day, we stayed at a beautiful Jesuit albergue. We went to a short mass and were brought to the front receive a pilgrim's blessing by the priest. We were then served a communal meal, and had dinner conversation with new friends from France and Chile. Tomorrow, Marjory and I tackle a 31K trek, across the Meseta- it's supposed to be a hot one...     Last night we had a final dinner together, as a foursome. Cyndee has decided to walk with two women who are walking at a slower pace and will take an additional 3-5 days to complete the Camino.Today, Marjory, Maria and I trekked 28k, about 7 hours, to Ages. This section took us through wheat fields, and over some steep inclines, into the forest. Along the way, we saw more cave dwellings and continue to see these snails that devour entire plants! Escargot?? Tomorrow, we hike to Burgos, Maria's final day on the Camino. She will be taking a bus to Madrid, then flying to Guadalajara to meet her family for vacation, and soak her feet in the Pacific Ocean. We'll miss our friend!Meer informatie

    Belorado

    Along the path, I often reflect on the people and things for which I am so grateful: red poppies in an endless yellow wheat field; the rhythmic crunch of rocks under my boots; simplicity of the journey; yellow arrows leading the way; a body that is doing everything I'm asking of it; the moment I get to unlace my boots and place my feet on the cool tiles of the new Albergue; seeing the sunrise behind a building that was built a thousand years ago; losing my thinking mind in the walking and reflecting deeply on each beloved member of my family ❤️; smelling cereal as we trudge through miles of wheat fields; hearing 10 different languages during the course of the day, each changing to "Buen Camino!" with big smiles as we pass; Marjory's quick wit, passion for social justice and our deepening friendship; Maria's patience and the special "Amiga" relationship we share; Cindy's gentle spirit and bravery in paving a new path; the breeze that mixes with sweat to cool us down; Cafe sin leche; Mark, who helps me get my balance, even when he is 5,000? miles away; chocolate croissants; the beautiful people of Spain who are always willing to pause for questions, give directions, welcome total strangers to walk through their neighborhoods, yelling "Buen Camino!"; little surprises that seem to appear around each corner; my family who has supported me in this adventure, researched and gifted me with the perfect items for the journey, who leave encouraging messages on my blog posts and who's love I can feel all the way from home.❤️Meer informatie

    Santo Domingo del Calzada

    Today was a comfortable day of walking, 21 k, with a cool morning breeze. We started on our way at 6am, and I was able to get this amazing photo of the sunrise, on the trail outside of Najera. We also saw nesting storks on the church steeple, and cave dwellings carved into the side of this mountain! Our albergue, pictured here, was one of the nicest we've experienced so far! We are walking through lots of grape vineyards. They are planted in very rocky soil, and irrigated through a deep well and flume system, that uses gravity to keep the system flowing. Amazing! The vines are so healthy and producing lots of grapes! I have included pictures of my dinner tonight. We ate with people from Germany, Scotland, and New York. It included the biggest prawns I ever eaten, a huge piece of cod, salad, and a piece of cheese cake. Delicious! Love and hugs!Meer informatie

    Najera

    Our mantra, from the start of our adventure, was to have our own Camino- to do it in our way. Today, Maria and Cyndee decided to take a break and rest their weary feet. They took a bus to Najera. Marjory and I started out at 6am, and walked for 7 hours, covering 30 kilometers. It was even terrain, on a dirt road, and we had a cool breeze for the entire trip. We saw a shepherd, driving a herd of sheep on the trail we were hiking. His boarder collie kept them all in line! We have been seeing lots of beautiful wild flowers, including the red poppy in the photo below. We also saw this beehive structure- not sure what it was, but I'll let you know when I figure it out.🤔If you look closely at the photo of Marjory and me, you can see a huge black bull on the hill behind us. This week, in Spain, is the celebration of Saint Fermin and the running of the bulls. We got out of Pamplona before the madness began! Finally, I snapped a photo of this street art before we left Logrono. She just seemed to call out to me😁. Love to you all.Meer informatie

    Logrono

    Our trek to Logrono was our longest stretch yet, 18.5 miles, officially passing the 100 mile mark! This morning we decided to get an early start, only to find the front courtyard gate of the albergue was locked and no one could leave. 😨 Finally, I was able to pull a bolt on a back gate and we were all able to get out. It was a long, tough trek, but saw some cool things along the way. It is amazing to realize that this part of the Spanish countryside reminds us so much of Zamora and the Dunnigan hills! When we finally arrived in Logrono, after showering, washing our clothes, and checking our feet for blisters, we bought food for breakfast and lunch for tomorrow, (this is our routine, now). On the way back to our albergue, we followed V's advise and had churros and thick dipping chocolate- delicious and rich! Next, we ate dinner and are ready for bed. Tomorrow is another long day, but my body seems to be adjusting to this distance walking and nothing hurts anymore. On with the adventure!Meer informatie

    Estrella to Los Arcos

    We met in the plaza of San Miguel at 6:30am... The previous evening, we were picked by a man and taken to two separate pensions. We had no idea where we were going until we got there. The room was nice, but we had to navigate a medieval city, with high walls and no street signs, before the sun came up. After wandering and getting lost, a man who was trying open his shop put Cyndee and me in his car and drove us to the Plaza. Maria and Marjory were just as lost, and didn't arrive until a half hour later. This all happened before we even started on the Camino this morning! We got about an hour into our walk, when lightning filled the sky, the thunder roared, and rain poured down. We threw our ponchos on and continued to walk. It was a day that brought a sip of wine offered by a monastery, a warm cup of coffee held between wet hands, the fresh smell of a saturated t wheat field, sharing stories and laughing at our situation.     Estrella

    Today we arrived in Estrella. Walking is an adventure in itself- we, as a group, stick together most of the time. Falling back or pulling forward, away from the group, can provide time for quite reflection or even belting out songs that I was practicing on the guitar. It's amazing to realize that although hundreds of people are walking the Camino, you can still find moments of quite solitude. It has also been amazing to meet people from all over the world, some from our neck of the woods, and so many teachers! We had dinner with Elaine from Scotland, Martin from Germany, and Connie from Sacramento. Francesca from Italy and I shared stories on the trail, and Marshall from Willows, CA chased after our group to tell us we had taken a wrong turn! The towns people are so friendly, willing to offer directions, or just yell, Buen Camino! as we talk by. Tomorrow, we are trying to get an earlier start, (6 am), so we can arrive in Los Arcos before the forecasted thunderstorm that is supposed to begin at 2 pm.     Puente de la Reina

    Today we arrived in Puente de la Reina, after a great day of walking. We have begun to hit our stride: remembering to eat before hitting empty; taking more breaks to rest; and reflecting more fully on the amazing sites around us. The area outside of Pamplona was surrounded by fields of wheat, barley, and sunflowers. It was interesting to see modern ag equipment and 200 year old buildings in the same field, as well as sign prohibiting sexist aggressions in front of an ancient church- an impressive marriage of the old and the progressive. The people on the Camino continue to be helpful, wonderful, and are becoming familiar faces as we continue cross each others' paths, and share stories and experiences.     Pamplona

    We had some time to check out the city before bed. A quick description in photo order: Hemingway's Corner, (we made a toast to him with a cold one); a parade in the streets,( Saint Fermin's Day and the running of the bulls is next week; standing in front of the draw bridge that leads to Pamplona's center; a beautiful cathedral;the signs and yellow arrows that have guided our way; an albergue dorm where we will be sleeping tonight.     Another great day of trekking! We passed through farmlands to the city today. It was interesting to discover that the outskirts of Pamplona is in Basque country that has its own language, and independent cultural identity. They do not claim to be part of Spain and have their own distinct language. We are staying at Jesus and Maria albergue de peregrinos, in Pamplona. There are about 100 beds, bunk beds, dormitory style. Our routine is to arrive, check in, shower, wash our clothes, make our beds, and then eat. It's time to get something to eat!     Roncevalles

    We trekked over the Pyrenees mountains and crossed the boarder from France into Spain. Beautiful! There were amazing views of lush green countryside and small villages with with white houses and red tile roofs far below. Herds of cows and sheep with cowbells and bands of wild horses roamed the grazed. Friendly people from around the world starting this adventure and reaching Roncesvalles, where we finished our day and slept in an old monastery.Meer informatie
