    Calgary

    April 2, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 1 °C

Starting my work and travel in Calgary after receiving my working permit with the transit in Montreal.
Montreal was… interesting security and staff members not so friendly and a bit critical with just 2 hours time between the flights.
But I managed it on time and lucky for me that I did not had to get my luggage otherwise it would haven been chaos.

After 4 hours flight Montreal to Calgary I arrived with an uber by the hostel at around 18:00.
Checked in, good some food and went to bed. I was done for the day.
Big day ahead so I need my sleep.

  • Administration for my work and travel

    April 3, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 1 °C

After my breakfast in the hostel, which included waffles, toast and eggs I made my way to the Canadian service center to get my SIN number. For starters it’s the tax number which you also need to open up a bank account.
It took me 10 min walk and 1 hour waiting time but then I had my SIN and on my way to open my Canadian bank account.
First I went to CIBC but they told be to make an appointment for Monday. Definitely did not had time to wait for Monday so went to the next bank “scotiabank”. I went through the door and had my account after 30 min. Quick and easy nothing to worry about.

Did not thought that I’ll be done with this so quickly and decided to go some shopping for my time in Banff with horses.
So a must have are really good boots and a cowboy hat.
The sales person help me so much and after 1 hour trying on boots and different hats we finally found the perfect fit.

Quite a bit of tasked finished for one day but that’s good so I have free to do whatever I want for the next days.
PS: wore my new boots and of course, blisters. Have to walk them in until my work starts. Should be fine. I hope 🤞

  • Calgary

    April 4, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

On Friday I just took a stroll through town, dinner with a roommate and at night went to a small pub with live music.
Then bands were really cool and the atmosphere… amazing. Loved it so much.
Saturday I met up with my dad to go shopping for our 3 week trip in the car and yes can’t believe it either but camping/sleeping in the car trip.
We went to Walmart, got some groceries and ice cream.

From Sunday on it will be more exciting.

  • Waterton National Park to Kootenay

    Apr 7–8, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

After my first night in the car in Waterton National Park, we moved on to Skookchuck a recreation site to camp directly at the Larchwood lake. This lake is sides in the Kootenay National Park.

Most recreation side are use by the Canadians cause it’s more simple build.

no people nearby and one of the colder nights of the trip.
Driving through the national parks is amazing and gives you a surreal peaceful feeling.

  • Golden, BC canadian driving license

    April 8, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

After waking up frozen cause it was really cold even though I slept in the car, we decided to move on and check on breakfast spots on the way. We were lucky found a break spot near a river with an amazing view and washrooms with hot water, which I directly used to wash my hair cause I was going to change my driving license into a Canadian one.
Let me tell you …. That was a whole day process. I tried to change my internal license cause I did not want to lose my German one. Did not work cause you need an official statement from our car insurance that I have been driving my car for 5 years so I don’t get the beginner license. We had to drive to Golden so I could get it all sorted and in the end I just did an eye sight test and answered some question as well get my German license shredded. Full day wasted for this.

Since it was already late we checked in sleeping places and like the nights before we found a recreation side in the middle of nowhere. The lake was used by locals for fishing but with this temperature I would not be the first in the morning on the water. Nahhh way toooo cold 🥶
But I have to admit I was a bit concerned because of the bears waking up slowly.

  • Time to get to Banff

    April 9, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

After we finished the important stuff (driving license) it was time to get to Banff and plan our days up to jasper.

We actually stayed in a hotel, couldn’t believe it but yes 👍🏻 the campground was not really meant for tents and the weather was not as good. So lucky for me my dad accepted that we stay one night in a hotel.

When we arrived in Banff we went into town to do some looking, shopping and at night I met with a really nice German girl which I met in the hostel in Calgary. We went to the Irish pub and enjoyed a chilled night out. Next day will be a long day up to jasper driving the famous icefields parkway.

  • Scenic Icefields Parkway, Banff - Jasper

    April 10, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ -1 °C

We started early that day to be ahead of all the tour buses and it was worth it.
This drive is through the Rockies and it’s just breathtaking. The feeling of the beautiful nature surrounding you… no words

We past the glacier and the reality hit me hard when seeing the difference of how much it has melted. There you realize how much of an input humans have on the nature and global warming.

  • Jasper

    Apr 10–11, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C

Jasper had a big hit back with the fire two years ago and you can still see the damage. The once beautiful campground where the animals were walking through, destroyed and robed of the beautiful nature and food resources.
It is shocking how much a fire can change everything.

Jasper is smaller than Banff and not as touristic (Ski season and many young people arriving). We stayed on one of the campgrounds and still had a lot off luck to meet some of the animals.

  • Jasper to Mount Robson

    April 11, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

After a really nice night in Jasper we decided to move on and have a drive to Mount Robson. Its still winter so no big trails to hike but at least I know where to go and my Dad gave me really good tip one which trail to do.
Have a mentioned that the toilets at the campgrounds and any other open washrooms are sooo clean I can't. It´s amazing how they keep all clean for no extra money and in Germany you pay for a disgusting washroom.

Anyway after our late breakfast we went to check on where to stay next cause all campground where closed for the winter, not may options.

We drove to Wells Grey Park, beautiful and probably even better when you do not need to sleep at some car park which signs of wolfs and bears. Bear bell and bear spray on hand.
It was pretty scary but still a thing to remember.

    Apr 12–13, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

Next stop on the way to Clearwater and revelstocke. Somewhere on the contry side.
It was cold really cold so did not stay there too long. Still nice place for the summer to remember.

  • Clearwater and Revelstoke

    Apr 13–15, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 5 °C

Next stop Clearwater and Revelstock where we spend two nights because of the beautiful campground.
This are to not so touristic places but nice to have a stop offer and have some time back into the civilisation since in most parts in the national parks you do not have any phone connection.Read more

  • Revelstoke to Banff

    April 16, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

Almost at the end with the father daughter trip. We are on our way back to Banff so that I can move into my home for the next 6 month. One last night at the campground ⛺️ which was almost booked out cause of the eastern weekend. Banff is a spot not just for tourists, also for the Canadian locals.

I actually made plans the first night with my new roommates who are from Australia.
In Banff there is every night something going on and since it was Wednesday it was open Mic at Tommy’s neighborhood Pub. A small old pub but the open mic was amazing. So many good singers. My dad joined us and we had a really nice night out.

  • Move in day

    April 17, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 2 °C

But nervous I have to admit but well it was the the to move in and meet our manager for the first time. I picked up the girls from their hostel since they had quite a bit of luggage and after we parked we met up with Oliver, checked if all the documents were right and off the went to the house.
What everyone needs to know, Canada has a different understanding when it comes to housing. In Germany no one would pay rent for current kind of apartments which here in Canada doesn’t apply.
It is a house with two apartments, we live in the OG and 3 other girls downstairs.
So our place has 3 bedrooms which will be shared with each two people so we’ll be living with 6 people in this place.

When the girls and I arrived there were still 2 Dutch girls living in one room which we did not mind but as soon as we got into the house we were 🤢 it was dirty all over and no cleaning utensils as well the vacuum was not working. Great start I recon.

We decided right away to go to Calgary the next day to get everything we needed.

  • Time for shopping

    April 18, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Since the house has nothing in it we spent the whole day in Calgary and in Cochrane to get all necessary things like bedding, vacuum and food. As well shirts, hat and boots for the Australian housemates.
Cleaned the house and made it a bit more cozy.

  • Canmore, Banff and Lake Louis

    Apr 19–25, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

After the big shopping the next view days we just check out the area around us (Canmore, Johnson Canyon) as well joining a beginner snowboarding class.
FYI I suck at snowboarding 😂 ok stay with the water sports.

As well spending some nights out with drinks and live music.
Banff is a tourist spot but almost every night you have live music and some pubs have pool tables.

On Tuesday I drove my dad to Calgary since his flight back to Germany was on the 28th. But before that we had an amazing fire pit night with sausages and drinks.

  • Banff to Redstone, BC (changed job)

    Apr 26–May 26, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

I have to admit… I stopped writing cause so much happened. The first view days at work and In Banff where nice and I was able to meet so many nice people and learn more about myself but guiding horse trails was not for me. It was neither about the horses or the people so I did not felt comfortable there. I loved my roommates but the work not so. Just imagine spending in high season 15 hours just talking all day about the same thinks and not just over the day, every day… nooo not for me. So I took some time off and travelled to my next job. Working for a Swiss family. Well that topic is for a different post 😎Read more

  • Rafter25Ranch

    Jun 3–27, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

I was supposed to work at the Ranch but when I arrived they put me in the restaurant, which kinda made me mad but well I have to get money in so I decided to just do it. Working in the restaurant is fine I think so but being honest…. They have frozen food from 2017 and the milk they use for the coffee is not pasteurized and still they sell it and serve it. On the good side I got the horses which they said are fine to ride. Side note they are not I’m starting with the training from scratch and also giving ridding lessons. Mostly every day after work for 3 hours and the best part, I don’t get paid. Conclusion from one unsatisfying job to the other. My plan is to stay until I find a better job. Let’s see where this is taking meRead more

  • New roommate arrived

    June 16, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

After almost a month alone with the owner in the restaurant doing cooking, cleaning, shop work, accommodation work and gardening i finally got a roommate and a second girl to join the crew. She is from Japan and since I wanted to get some groceries on Monday it was convenient for me to pick her up from the airport anyway. Working alone with the boss was really tiring cause she is not reasonable and professional communication is not available in that family. But that’s fine I know how to ignore that kind of behavior. Anyway I picked Rumi up from the airport and we went to get some food and stopped in the way for some sightseeing.
Before Rumi was coming we had to Australians joining us but they left the next day after arrival. They even told everyone a different story why they’re leaving 😂 still don’t know why and we’ll never find out. Put that is actually a thing. Some people cancel the day before arrival and others one day after arrival.

  • Rodeo in Williams Lake

    Jun 27–28, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Best thing ever, we where allowed to go to the Rodeo which is 2 hours drive away. The restaurant was closed for the whole Saturday. We (Rumi, Lukas, Mat and I) decided to get there on Friday and spend the night. We got a tip from a local where it would be best to camp. To our surprise we were in the middle of a whole group of First Nation people. They did a 7 day cycling and horse riding trip to Williams lake to attend the parade. It was amazing besides the fact that I was knocking on car windows at 3 o’clock at night cause some of the horses escaped and we had to catch them. The next day I got a sticker and they told me to keep it close and if I need help at anytime I just need to go to some people and show them the sticker and they will help me.
Back to the rodeo, we decided to go on Friday to the live music event and also paid 20$ which was not a good idea. They stopped serving alcohol at 12:30 and closed down at 12:45. That much to going out dancing 😑 but the Saturday was fun with all the acts and the good seatings we were able to get. The boys and Rumi enjoyed it and it was their first Rodeo.

  • Accidentally helping with a cattle drive

    June 30, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

At the Ranch you have only beginners who learn riding from me besides the boss of course so you can just imagine how surprised I was when the information came that they want to do the cattle via horse. The boss will be at the quad and Chris the ranch help from the UK which I have given riding lessons on the horse.
I offered to just tag along since it is my day off and I’ll will not be paid for the work. I just wanted to make sure Chris would not be killing himself. 5 am we were on the horses and of we went but suddenly it was” Naomi you have to lead”. Okayyy never done that but ok I’ll rock that which I did. 😎 but it was fucking scary, cantering through trees and guiding the cows or catching the runaways. My knees took quite some damage and my jeans well one leg ripped cause of the trees we were hitting. Lucky my boots stopped getting my calves being cut open. 9 hours on the horses, we all were so tired and I was a little pissed off cause I’ve been doing that for nothing. Working for free. Well at least I can put that now on my CV.

  • Meeting with a new friend

    July 1, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

After the day from the cattle drive I was driving with the car to anaham lake to meet with a German girl and a potentially new job opportunity.
I also wanted to take the garbage away, let’s say Canada wants to do so much for the nature but dumping the garbage into holes in the ground is not a good option.
Anyway it was a nice day out with finally someone to ride out with and just talk about experiences in Canada.

  • Redstone to Calgary

    Jul 5–7, 2025 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

I bought tickets for the biggest rodeo in Canada before I knew that I would not be staying in Banff. But I decided to go anyway and pack all my stuff in case I’ll find a new job. Of course I still have the one at the restaurant but still who knows.
First day I drove 6 hours and the next day 5. I have to say that is a long way with the car on my own and camping, as well sleeping at strange places 😂 but I arrived had also a job interview and now starts the relaxing. Oh yea I also did an oil change and made an appointment for a windshield replacement.
First night in an Airbnb was not great. Not sure where I landed but I did not slept and I checked every 30 min if my car is still there. Can’t recommend. But now I have a really nice room and can’t wait to start my stampede adventure.
