• Day 6 - Woomera / Adelaide

    June 11 in Australia ⛅ 20 °C

    Last day of the trip.

Had breakie at the military base. A fair number of military people and workmen in the restaurant, we appeared to be the only tourists. Our tour leader lost her coffee. There were many museums adjoining the restaurant showcasing the rockets and projects that the base had been associated with. There were also displays about the life of Len Beadell.

We then browsed the mock rockets on display at the local park and continued on.

Our next stop was the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden. Honestly it was pretty boring, I was mostly interested in a sun dial that gave both the time of day as well as the date. There were surprisingly few flies, so maybe the plants there give off some chemicals to keep them away??

On our way south we passed many wind and solar projects. Including a setup where they use mirrors to desalinate water and produce power. The desalinated water is used to grow tomatoes that are supplied to Coles.

It was a long drive down to Port Germein. We had a lunch stop and took in the town. The town's main feature is a long jetty that was once the longest in the southern hemisphere, unfortunately you can no longer walk down due to safety concerns. Like many places, the town's decline was due to the railways - in this case the rail network expanded, bypassing the need to ship grain out from the port.

The last notable event of the trip was to observe Nessy. She was taking a holiday from her native land of Scotland to visit Lake Bumbunga in South Australia.

After that it was back to our hotel in Adelaide. Pizza from Sunny’s Pizza, which was recommended to us from the tour leader. A delicious way to end the trip.
