In 1 week from today I will be on my way to Budapest to begin a Viking River Cruise on the Romantic Danube! Between now and next Thursday, there is a lot to get done. And as I'm house / Gretta sitting this week I am not home to get started. But I can make lists: laundry, what to take?, how many shoes?, bike clothes (yes, biking excursions are available on the trp), dress? Na- it will just hang in the closet! Skorts? Yes, dressy but comfortable. Slacks, capris, shorts, tops, etc...
10 days worth of vitamins and other pills, 3 oz liquids. in a ziploc bag of course, + this, + that...
Did I exchange USD for EUROS? yes, but Hungry doesn't use the Euros - I have some currency for there.
Documents: Avanti for flights, transfer and pre-night in Budapest. Viking docs for cruise. I'll be meeting 9 other AAA Carolinas agents and our BDM, Barry Johnston either on Friday or Saturday on board.
Last but not least, Jerry will be joining me. He's seen a lot of Europe in his young life and he never complains!
Looking forward to seeing new places, new experiences, learning how wonderful Viking is, and sharing these with friends, clients, and family.

Sometimes getting there is half the fun, sometimes not... this wasn't too bad: great 'parking spot' where the shuttle picks you up right at your car, flight was only 30 minutes delayed from CLT, plenty of time in Munich. Seated row 18D, aisle but right behind a couple and their 18 month son which dad decided to recline all night... didn't get much sleep. Grabbed a cafe and sandwich in MUC, quick change of clothes and I'm ready to go. Budapest here I come!!Baca selengkapnya

After flying 10+ hours what do you do???

Self guided walking tour, starting from our hotel with a short walk over the Szechenyi Lanchid ~ one of the bridges over the Danube that connects Buda to Pest. Can't believe all we saw in 5 hours, then we had a nice dinner, river side. A number of Viking ships ready to cruise if water levels are good. We embark tomorrow but stay in port part of Sunday. It was great to reconnect with 3 other AAA Carolinas agents. We will meet up with the others, if not before, at the dock.

Budapest day 2

Full day in Budapest to walk, see, eat, drink, and meet friends; new & old. Beautiful weather and water levels high enough to allow us to set sail up the Danube tomorrow.
This morning I took a leisurely walk and lite rail tour of Buda, then we walked across the bridge (toting our luggage from the Carlton hotel) to the Pest side and boarded the Viking Egil. Had a fabulous lunch on the Aquavit Terrace, then a wine and cheese pairing with Stephanie, Becky, Vicki, Barry Johnston and... we kept adding chairs as new friends joined us.
After, we took off walking again because you know what's coming... happy hour followed by a fabulous dinner. Night caps on the upper deck to see this beautiful city. Back to our cabin as Stephanie and I settle in and unpack. Early to bed because tomorrow the adventures start at 8a.Baca selengkapnya

Goodbye Budapest

Beautiful morning and last glimpse at Budapest. City tour through Pest side, then cross the Danube and head up to the castle area of Buda. Motorcoach drops us near St. Stephen's, unfortunately was not able to go in as Mass had already started, but it was impressive from the outside. The views from here were amazing. As we took the motorcoach tour, the Viking Elbe heads up river and we reboard. Now it's lunch and an afternoon of views, cocktails, naps and more cocktails! By the morning we should be in Vienna.

Afternoon and evening cruising

Making our way to Vienna. Afternoon and evening cruising the Danube and through our 1st lock, more to come. Great meal, excellent wines, fun table companions and the best chef! Then up to the top level for star gazing, Limoncello shots and passage through the first lock.Baca selengkapnya

VIENNA

The great thing about a river cruise is that it is your floating hotel and all your meals are available for you, but if you are in a city with so much to offer, spend the time exploring and eat with locals. We had a great lunch at Figlmuller, excellent wienerschnitzel and even better friends to share it with.
So the morning city tour took us around Vienna and to St. Stephen's a beautiful Catholic church that has great history and beautiful spires you can take an elevator to the top, ok, for a cost.
We wandered around and ended up at Figlmuller for lunch. Subway back to the ship for 15 minutes and back on the subway to the open market tour with our executive chef. Looking at all the fabulous local produce he purchases for our excellent meals. Toured around with Barry, Aly and Kristina then headed back to the ship via the subway again. Ready for a shower and nap... ok a drink too!!! Rested up on the sun desk till I needed a refill and am now in the lounge pre dinner music and cocktails. Others are back from their afternoon adventure of ' paddling through the wetlands' . Looking forward to hearing their stories.

By the time I got to bed I was so tired and my photos were on my phone and this app is on my tablet... anyway here's a fun recap of Tuesday night's fun. We had a lovely cocktail hour with Viking past guests who shared their past adventures and what's next! Great dinner on the Aquavit Terrace then drinks and entertainment! Morning in Krems, Austria

Just around breakfast time we docked in Krems. Many took the morning excursion to Gottweig Abbey. I joined the bike excursion along the river and into Durmstein. Riding alongside vineyards, we stopped to take in the view of the Abbey. After some time to shop and taste the Apricot liqueur, we head back to our ship. Lunch on the Aquavit Terrace and cruising day through the Wachua Valley. Beautiful day for sailing, relaxing, and Apple Strudel demonstration. Finished product was excellent.Baca selengkapnya

With the locks and cruising traffic, we were a little late getting into Passau but able to get our city tour done before lunch. Great meal and we are off again.

Bike tour along the River Inn

After a wonderful morning walking tour through Passau, great lunch on the terrace we are off again on our next bike adventures: Germany to Austria ( & back). Beautiful ride along the River Inn, through the forest and over the bridge to Austria. A few challenging times but e-bikes gives you that extra boost to make it easier. Funny feeling to be biking and see your ship cruising without you! Dropped the bikes off and bussed to our next port. 2 days, back to back bike excursions were challenging but an excellent way to see so much.
Dinner was perfect then evening drinks and off to bed, want to be well rested for Thursday: morning tour and afternoon microbreweries!!!🍺🍻🍺🍻🍺 Cheers!Baca selengkapnya

After getting back on the Danube we cruised into Nuremberg the next morning. But what we saw along the way; amazing sunset, castles, sheep, skinnie dippers ( sorry no pictures!) Sorry to say, but it's been another beautiful day along the Danube River. Today's adventures started with a walking tour through the city and visit the beautiful St. Peter's church. Lunch then our tour and tasting of Bavarian beers, pretzels and sausages! On our Microbreweries tour we stopped at 2 locations for beer and food pairing; excellent!! Found ourselves with an hour before we were to meet our transfer, so after a little more shopping and walking, we ended up at a beer garden near an ice cream shop. Great way to cool down. Weather has been so good, cool in the morning and sunny, not too warm in the afternoon. As we explored Regensburg, the ship moved up river towards our final port in Nuremberg.Baca selengkapnya

Nuremberg by day

Full day at our last stop along the Danube River. So much to see, to learn, to eat & drink. Ended our tour with pretzels and beer (or wine) before we head back to the ship and our farewell dinner.
