    Fossil Butte National Monument happened to be along our route so we stopped for a short hike and a scenic drive. The Aspen trees are in full color display here and we had quite the wildlife showing at dusk with mule deer, pronghorn, and jackrabbits all along the road.

    Fossil Butte National Monument was established in 1972 to protect one of the world’s richest fossil deposits from the Eocene Epoch, preserving a vivid snapshot of ancient life from 50 million year old Fossil Lake.
