  • Detroit

    1. Oktober 2025 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

A day in Detroit spent walking in the heart of the city and along the waterfront.

We had some insane pastries at Cannelle, saw the spirit of Detroit, checked out Hart plaza, walked along the water, and toured the Renaissance Center (General Motors headquarters).

We followed all that up with some pizza at Pie Sci Pizza.

  • Indiana Dunes National Park

    6. Oktober 2025 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Asking the south shore of Lake Michigan, in sight of the Chicago skyline, sits Indiana Dunes National Park.

This park is the product of over a century of passionate advocacy. The movement began in 1916 when botanist Henry Cowles and local citizens rallied to protect the region’s rare dune ecosystems. Despite early setbacks, their efforts led to the creation of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in 1966. After decades of grassroots campaigning, it was officially redesignated as a national park in 2019.

It was a fun and unexpected park, sitting in a hub of industrial activity.

  • Des Moines

    7. Oktober 2025 in den USA ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

A short stop in Des Moines to stretch our legs. We walked around the Pappajohn Sculpture Park and then meandered downtown. While we saw the capital building, we weren’t close enough to take pictures.

Des Moines has an interesting “Skywalk” that connects most of the buildings downtown together so you don’t need to go outside. 4.2 miles of walkway connect 55 buildings and 12 parking garage. The system was conceived in the 1960’s and inspired by a similar connected system in Minneapolis.

A little history about Des Moines… It was founded in 1843 as Fort Des Moines. The city was established at the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers to protect the Sauk and Fox peoples. The area opened to settlers in 1845, and by 1857, the “Fort” was dropped from its name as Des Moines became the official capital of Iowa, replacing Iowa City.

Des Moines also played a role in civil rights history: in 1920, Iowa women voted for the first time, and in 1925, the National Bar Association was founded here by African-American lawyers advocating for justice.

  • Vedauwoo - Medicine Bow Natl Forest

    9. Oktober 2025 in den USA ⋅ 🌙 8 °C

Camping in National Forests again after so long feels like a real treat. Free dispersed camping overlooking some incredible rock formations at Vedauwoo in Medicine Bow National Forest.

Some fun facts about this area:

The rock is 1.4 billion-year-old Sherman Granite with towers and bewildering landforms sculpted by natural forces over eons of time.

It’s considered the Fat Crack/Offwidth climbing mecca of North America with well over 1,000 climbing routes here.

We woke up to a beautiful sunrise and had some mule deer join us for coffee before a 3 mile hike around Turtle Rock.

  • Fossil Butte National Monument

    9. Oktober 2025 in den USA ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Fossil Butte National Monument happened to be along our route so we stopped for a short hike and a scenic drive. The Aspen trees are in full color display here and we had quite the wildlife showing at dusk with mule deer, pronghorn, and jackrabbits all along the road.

Fossil Butte National Monument was established in 1972 to protect one of the world’s richest fossil deposits from the Eocene Epoch, preserving a vivid snapshot of ancient life from 50 million year old Fossil Lake.
