• Day 17 Wildlife park and longhouse

    August 1, 2025 in Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Once again early start to travel with our tour guide to the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre and the long house. The center is a orangutan sanctuary and nature reserve. We were lucky and managed to get up close to semi-wild orangutan. Semenggoh was set up in 1975 to care for wild animals that had been previously kept as illegal pets, orphaned or found injured in the rainforest. Over the years a number of orangutan have been successfully rehabilitated and released into the 653 hectare forest reserve.

Next we travelled to visit the Annah Rais Bidayuh Longhouse.
Annah Rais is located about 60 km from Kuching City. Annah Rais Bidayuh Longhouse is the oldest Bidayuh longhouse and the only traditional Bidayuh longhouse left in Sarawak. They are more than 80 doors (families) that lives in the longhouse which stood 10 feet above the ground. The longhouse was is built from Ironwood (belian) and mature bamboo (apek). Some parts of the longhouse is still original whereby it is attached without nails. They are approximately 1,500 people living in the longhouse and they are all related to each other. Not until the middle 19th century, our ancestors were “Head Hunters”. As a remembrance we still have the trophies which are kept at the Head House called “Panggah” until today ☠️💀 we saw it 😮. We also had the most delicious home cooked food and very fresh picked 🍍 pineapple. Traveling back and to refresh in the pool.
