Leaving Plitvic Lakes bejond we traveled west to return again to the Adriatic sea coast and the town of Opatija.

What an amazing contrast to our earlier stops! A, seaside resort and haven for royalty since the 19 th century the area reeks of money and high class.

Most of our tour group breaded out on an optional tour. Barb and I opted to takes the day oon or LeAnn and remained in town.

  • Train Ride in a Cave

    21 maja 2018, Słowenia ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Today we left Coatia for the last time on this trip and entered Slovenia. Our first destination was Postojna Caves.

An electric train took us 3 miles into the cave where we disembarked and walked amoung amazing caverns and geologic formations.

During WW II, German forces stored aircraft fuel inside the cave. Partisans blew up the fuel depot and it burned fpr 7 days. Formations near the depot are still blackened by the smoke.

  • Tongue Twisted in Slovenia

    21 maja 2018, Słowenia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

After the fast pace and noise (Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini and motorcycles all with extra loud engines that young drivers delight in driving fast and loud) of Opatija a stroll in the pedestrians only old town area of Ljubljana was a delight.

This city, in the Republic of Slovenia, our 5th country visited since May 1, is a real gem. Life moves at a relaxing pace with locals and visitors alike, most with smiles om their faces, strolling about the shops and historic sites.

We took a short guided tour of town then boarded a small river boat for a 45 minute cruise on the Ljubljananica River Canal.

The city is immaculate, environmentally green conscientious and has a strong and vibrant economy. It is an amazing place with amazing people justifiably proud of their city and country. It rivals any other city we have visited in Europe for charm and wsrmth and all should consider a visit before it gets "discovered ".

  • Country Number Six

    24 maja 2018, Węgry ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

We bid a fond farewell to our guide and touring companions last night at a dinner that included Slovenian foods and cultural music and dancing.

Today our driver from Mydaytrip.com met us at our Ljubljana hotel and we were quickly and comfortably off to Budapest, a 4.5 hour drive. We can highly recommend this means of travel within Europe. Our alternative was to fly to London then to Budapest, a 6 hour trip with layover, at more than twice the cost of the car journey or try to figure out a route by train lugging our suitcases along. And they stop for tours along the way!

We strolled the pedestrian only zone near our Budapest hotel, avoiding the hectic traffic of the city, and enjoyed Hungarian cuisine at a nearby restaurant before returning to our room. It overlooks the Danube river and has great views of historic buildings and the lovely bridges that connect Buda and Pest areas of the city.
