Once in Beaune we visited the fascinating Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune, a former charitable hospital. It was founded in 1443 by the chancellor of Burgundy as a hospital for the poor and run by an order of Catholic nuns and monks.
Elderly, disabled and sick people, orphans, women about to give birth and the destitute were all been welcomed for treatment and refuge from the Middle Ages until today, but now in a modern hospital.
It had displays of old medical equipment from the 1800's which made the stomach churn.Read more
