  • Kuala Lumpur Day 1

    22 de novembro de 2023, Malásia ⋅ 🌧 30 °C

After such a late arrival last night we had a very slow start. Eventually we headed out and picked up a’tapandgo’ card for the subway before heading to China town. We got a bit sidetracked and ended up walking around a market, buying some different fruit and having some lunch.

We went back to the apartment and in the evening went along food street and to the fancy shopping malls. We found a supermarket and bought food for dinner before heading back.

The morning was spent repacking the suitcases ready for our trip to Danum Valley tomorrow. We then checked out of the not great hotel, much to the receptionist surprise and got a Grab to the Hyatt Regency.

We left our bags and went for a walk around town, having fried rice for lunch. We checked into the hotel at 2pm and had another repack.

At sunset we went to the pool bar for a beer and then had a buffet dinner before bed.

  • Kota Kinabalu to Danum Valley

    26 de novembro de 2023, Malásia ⋅ 🌧 25 °C

Up early and a taxi to the airport for our 7.30am flight to Lahad Datu. On arrival we were met by the tour company and taken to the office to check in. We then had a two and a half hour drive through the forest to the Borneo Rainforest Lodge.

After our welcome drink we had lunch and waited for our room to be ready. At 3pm we went for our briefing and then for our first walk.

We set off along the road and headed for the canopy walkway, a sequence of suspension bridges through the canopy. We saw a few birds including the crested serpent eagle.

After the walk we had some time to ourselves for a shower and dinner. After dinner we hopped into a buggy and went for a night drive. We saw giant red squirrel and lesser mouse deer.

  • Danum valley day 1

    27 de novembro de 2023, Malásia ⋅ 🌧 29 °C

Up early to the noise of the jungle and we set off walking at 8am. Our walk was to the coffin cliffs and view point. It was hot, wet, muddy and there were leeches. We walked for abo2 hours up the hill to the coffin cliffs and saw the bones of the tribal ancestors. At the view point we could see out across the forest. Back at the lodge we cleaned our shoes and had a shower before lunch. We then had a little time to watch the world go by before our afternoon trek.

We set off through the jungle again, this walk was muddier, wetter and leechier than this morning! We walked for about 3 hours but after 2 there was a huge storm and it rained on us. Once back at the lodge we sort of got dry and then got ready for our night walk.

It had just stopped raining so it was damp but ok. We saw a few different things before heading back for dinner and bed.

    Today we saw:
    Red leaf monkeys
    Long tailed macaque
    Birds
    Leeches
    Frogs
    Slow loris
    Civet cat
    Conago
    Lizard
    Mud
    Pygmy elephant footprints
    Owls 🦉

  • Danum valley day 2

    28 de novembro de 2023, Malásia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We were awoken at5am by rustling around the house, no idea what it was. After breakfast we were putting our leech socks on and a troupe of red leaf monkeys came to the trees by the lodge. After watching them for a while we set off along the trails. Within 10 minutes we saw a mum and baby orangutan 🦧 🦧 in the trees across the river. We watched them for a while and then continued along the hornbill trail. There were quite a few hornbills so well named, but there were more mud and leeches!

We walked through the jungle for about an hour and a half and suddenly the cry came ‘ orangutan’ 🦧 🦧 🦧. Up in the tree there were three, mum, baby and child. Apparently this is unusual as mums only have 1 child at a time. We watched them eating the fruit and moving around the tree for ages.

We were just about at the road so it was a quick walk back to the lodge, where another female orangutan 🦧 was in the tree. We then went to the shoe wash station and cleaned and deleeched our shoes. Back in the room, after the leech check, Simon was hanging out some wet clothes and a neighbour said there was an orangutan 🦧 on the path outside the room. We went outside and there he was, shaking the bushes. Apparently he didn’t like the group watching as he charged them and they scarpered. We watched from afar as he made his way through the underbrush and then to a tree. 7 wild orangutans before lunch!

After a shower we went for lunch and then an afternoon to ourselves. After a little nap I sat on the deck and saw some samba deer 🦌 and a lesser fish eagle.

At 4.30pm we met the guide for our dusk walk. We went back along the muddy leech trail from yesterday and took a different turning, coming out at the canopy bridges. We climbed up to the first pylon and waited for dusk. Just before it went dark a giant red squirrel came out from a hole in the tree, climbed up and then leaped, gliding across to another tree.

We then walked back to the main road and slowly walked back to the lodge in the dark. We saw another Colugo, this time I saw it glide between trees.

Back at the lodge we demudded and it deleeched before a shower. I washed my hair for the third time today and it was needed!

Dinner at the lodge and bed, ready for an early start tomorrow.

  • Danum Valley to Kota Kinabalu

    29 de novembro de 2023, Malásia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Up very early to the sound of jungle insects. We saw a troupe of long tailed macaques by the river and then went for our final lodge breakfast.

After breakfast we set out along the Danum trail, finding lots more mud and leeches as we went. At the end of the trail we came to o bend in the river and walked out onto the rocks. The guide then told us that the male orangutan we’d been looking for was now at the lodge.

We set off back and went straight to where he knew it was. We first approached from the raised platform but the orangutan 🦧 threatened us so we backed off quickly.

Instead we approached from the ground and he tolerated us. We were able to stand and watch him for ages as he relaxed and munched his fruit, drooling 🤤 and dribbling because he was enjoying it so much.

As time ran out we returned to the lodge for the final leech check and mud removal and then back to the room for showers and packing. We then checked out and had lunch before the 2.5 hours drive back to Lahad Datu airport and the flight to Kota Kinabalu.

On arrival we collected our bags and got a grab to the hotel where we had dinner and bed, ignoring the pile of stinking clothes!

    30 de novembro de 2023, Malásia ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

After a horrendous night where we didn’t know if I had indigestion or a heart attack, but deciding on indigestion, and then a migraine, we had a slow day.
First job was to deal with the laundry, which wasn’t as difficult as we thought as there was a laundromat close by and it did a great job on the stench.

Once everything was hanging around the room drying we headed to the sun and got some food supplies in.

We did some admin jobs and booked some tours for the next few days.

In the evening we had the buffet dinner and an early night.

  • Kawa Kawa River Trip

    1 de dezembro de 2023, Malásia ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

After the night before’s lack of sleep we had a lie in and then the buffet breakfast. We then had a walk along the front and came to a shopping mall which we walked around for a while. It’s odd knowing we’re in Borneo and seeing familiar shops.

Back in the room we got ready for our afternoon/evening trip. We went to meet the driver at1pm and he didn’t arrive until nearly 2.30pm. This meant a super fast drive to get us to the Kawa Kawa dock for 4pm. Once there we had some pastries and fresh young coconut milk for afternoon tea.

We then got on a boat to see proboscis monkeys 🙈. They, along with just about everything else, were hiding.

Once off the boat we were taken to the sunset beach to watch the nonexistent sunset before returning to the dock for dinner. Fortunately they managed to do us a vegetarian meal and more coconut water.

We then got back on the boat for the firefly tour and this bit was worthwhile. The fireflies were plentiful and sparkling in the dark.

After 30 minutes we got off the boat and back in the car for the speedy drive home.

    2 de dezembro de 2023, Malásia ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

No day trip today so after breakfast I got a grab to Kota Kinabalu Wetlands and walked around for a couple of hours. They said there were horseshoe crabs but I didn’t see any.

Back at the hotel we sat by the pool until it started to rain. After lunch we went and had a walk around the waterfront food stalls and markets.

In the evening we went to a restaurant for dinner.

  • Tip of Borneo

    3 de dezembro de 2023, Malásia ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

I went on today’s trip by myself, with a driver and a guide. We went along the coast road and stopped at a market where I wandered around for half an hour. We then continued driving to the northern most point of Borneo, where the South China Sea meets the Sulu Sea. We walked around and went on the beach for a while.

Back in the minibus we drove to a village for lunch and visited a replica traditional long house.

We then drove to the Gong making village and walked around there before visiting a bee farm and tasting some honey.

We then had a long drive back to KK. In the evening we had dinner in the hotel.
