After our wait in Hong Kong we boarded the 14 hour flight to Barcelona. We were in the very last row of the plane but I was right next to the help yourself snack basket 😂.

Eventually we arrived in Barcelona and then got the metro to our hotel and tried to check in. Unfortunately we were too early so we went for a walk around the Gothic quarter.

By 1pm we were too tired and hot to do more so we went back to the hotel and fortunately the room was ready.

After a little nap we went to Aldi and got some groceries for dinner before an early night after a long journey.

We then headed up the hill to the old town and visited a few churches and looked around the shops and markets.

  • MAH to BCN

    July 16 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

An early start and finished packing before checking out. We drove to the car rental and dropped off the car before getting a transfer to the airport.

We checked in for our separate flights and met everyone else before going through security.

We had coffee and breakfast together before saying goodbye.

I caught my flight to Barcelona and then things got eventful!

Firstly, there was a 30 minute walk from the plane to the luggage carousel, which was almost impossible to identify but finally I located my suitcase.

Then I tried to find the Uber pick up location, which wasn’t nearly as difficult as getting an Uber! I tried and cancelled 2 before getting a regular taxi. When I googled it, the Barcelona taxi association is stopping uber using the airport… and being very successful.

Finally made it to the hotel. Well, yes and no. Turns out I stuffed up and booked the right hotel, the right date but the wrong year. And it was a non refundable reservation. And very expensive. Fortunately the receptionist was very nice and helpful. He found me a room on booking. Com and got me checked in early and let me have the upgrade I requested. And he talked to management who allowed me to cancel the incorrect reservation free of charge and get a full refund! 🎉!

Once in my room I sorted a few bits and checked in for my flight tomorrow. I then went to the lounge for a free lunch.

In the evening I went back to the lounge for cocktails and tapas. I ate a variety of different tapas and had some wine and cocktails before going to the restaurant for dinner.

When I got back to my room there was a night chocolate on the bed.

I went and had my included breakfast but had a migraine so didn’t indulge much.

Back in the room I had a shower and packed up and then caught a taxi back to the airport.

After I checked in, I went through security and found a coffee and my migraine meds before clearing immigration and boarding the 11 and a half hour flight to Hong Kong.

  • Hong Kong

    July 18 in Hong Kong ⋅ 🌧 31 °C

On landing in Hong Kong, I cleared immigration and collected my luggage. I then caught the AirPort Express to Hong Kong station and transferred to the MRT. I bought an Octopus card to make travel a little easier and after a walk, a train and another walk, I made it to my hotel.

Fortunately I was able to get in my room super early and have a shower before heading out… into the torrential rain ☔️. I went in the first coffee shop I saw and planned things out. I then caught a tram t mid level escalators and went up the hill a bit but I was tired and it was wet.

I went for a sit down in central market and then spent a few hours walking around the IFc mall and covered walkways. In the end I decided the rain wasn’t stopping and caught a tram back to the hotel.

I stopped at 7:11 on the way and bought lunch.

Back in the room I ate lunch and fell asleep. In the late afternoon, I tried going for another walk but was too tired so bought dinner in the 7/11 and watched the city lights come on as it went dark.

  • HKG to AKL

    July 19 in Hong Kong ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

I was up early and eating the hotel breakfast. I left just after 8am and caught the tram to the Peak Tram. Somewhere around here I noticed that we were under a typhoon warning, due to come in later today.

There were only a few other people so we had a pleasant journey to the top.

Once at the top, I battled the consumerism and found the free look out point for great views.

I caught the tram down and found the whole waiting hall full of people - I timed it well.

I the caught the tram back to the mid levels escalator and walked around the markets that I had missed yesterday. I then walked along the main shopping street, popping a few shops along the way.

Once I was done, I caught the tram back but got off early and walked through the shops and markets of Wan Chai.

I stopped and got some lunch which I ate in the room. At 2 pm I checked out and headed to the train station. The journey to the airport took about 1.5 hours.

After a little wait, I checked in and cleared security and immigration and then made my way to the lounge.

After some snacks and drinks and a shower, I headed to the gate. We boarded on time and they played the safety video… then the captain told us that the whole of air traffic in the area was a mess because of the typhoon and we had a major delay.

We sat on the tarmac for 2 hours and eventually took off, touching down in NZ an hour and a half before my connecting flight!
