Day 4 - Gellibrand to Mount Martha

    December 30, 2019 in Australia ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Well, what an interesting day weather-wise. Went to bed on Sunday evening when it was 36C and woke up to 19C – very pleasant. After leaving the campsite around 0900 we drove to Lavers Hill for breakfast – on the short drive of around 20 minutes the temperature rose from 19C to 29C. Lovely breakfast in a nice café with some wonderful colourful birds just outside on the bird tables. After breakfast we drove down to the coast at Apollo bay and the temperature rose again to 39C by the time we hit the coast (just after 1030). As such, the temperature had gone from 19C to 39C in about 1.5 hours. On the coast road we stopped where a few other cars had stopped and saw no less than 3 wild Koalas quite close up. After a refuelling in Apollo Bay we drove the section of the Great Ocean Road to Lorne – the section we had missed on Friday due to the traffic. Very pretty and quite spectacular in places. By the time we arrived in Lorne it was 43C and we stopped for a cold drink. We then drove on to Torquay for lunch and by then the temperature had risen to 45C. After Torquay we did some shopping on the outskirts of Geelong before driving to Queenscliff for the ferry back to Sorrento. The sky was rapidly darkening but it was still very hot and eventually we had some rain. We arrived back at Mount Martha in the early evening.Read more
