    Montezuma Falls in the rain

    We spend a chilly and cozy morning in the car, waiting for the rain to pass. That didn't happen though, so evetually we did a long wet and muddy walk to find Tassies highest waterfall.
    Under the roof on the side of our car we chopped up all our vegetables to warm up with soup before heading to a city in the north coast; getting ready to leave Tasmania.Lue lisää

    Leaving Tassie

    Finishing Tassie as we started, we made an attempt for shopping in a very small shopping street before getting stuff down from the roof again to go into the ferry back to the main land.
    Driving in Tasmania is all about finding a way with only fes unsealed roads and avoiding animals and roadkills on the road. It's easy to find places to park overnight, but drinking water taps are rare. Besides mountains and national parks, the island were a lot of cold and early mornings, beautiful skies, wildlife, convict history, and long drives with Spanish lessons.Lue lisää

    The state Victoria

    We are off the small towns in Tasmania for sure. Cities, freeways, and too much traffic all over. Though, in Melbourne we did have a good cafe breakfast, and we found a polish baker with piles of eye bread! Eventually, after another parking ticket (!), we stopped at a nice beach in the very first part of Great Ocean Road for a great afternoon break until sunset.
    At night we were, again, reminded that we are back in the most touristy area this state has to offer, which apparently means that you cannot sleep in your car anywhere within an hour from this place. While looking for a place to hide, getting lost on the way, we past a caravan park and stayed. First night since we left the couch in Darlinghurst, we are paying for. A funny old man in the reception tipped us on good spots further down the coastline not to miss.    Lue lisää

    Great Ocean Road day one

    Following curved mountain edges and coastlines, tourists and plenty of surfers, we made our way down the first part of Great Ocean Road with heavy clouds and an occasional rainbow ahead of us.
    Ending up in a hostel in Apollo Bay, we enjoyed having lights for cooking, even after sunset, and electricity for charging everything despite the rain making our solar panels useless. He even brought the tv and playstation to our room for bit of gaming and FINALLY watching Game of Thrones!Lue lisää

    Great Ocean Road day two

    Running between massive rain showers we saw a lot of tourists and a bit of The Twelve Apostles hiding behind beautiful grey clouds and impressive waves.
    We still can't sleep in the car anywhere but found a (cheap) powered campground and finished the last season of Game of Thrones.Lue lisää

    Going north

    We went back to the touristy spots along Great Ocean Road in the early morning to see these beautiful cliffs with no asians taking selfies in front of them. And beautiful it was! On our way back we stopped in a small hidden gravel road and found a way to the peak of one of the empty cliffs, walking in slippery clay to our ankles and a heavy wind pushing us forward.
    Having had enough of cold wind, we skipped the coastline for now and made our way towards the Grampians in the evening, driving slowly through thunder, hail and storm till we found a campsite for the night.    Lue lisää

    The Grampians

    The weather forecast promised snow, but all we saw was rain. And a lot of it, making the cliffs so very slippery. And all this heavy wind makes an endless waiting time for water to boil. This state really wants us to just leave. But we did eventually get breakfast, and we also managed to walk in the Grampians grand canyon to see cliffs so different from what we left on the coastline just a few 100 km south.Lue lisää

    Rain

    It keeps raining, and the wind is making the van shaky despite our sort of protected hiding spot to spend the night. Today we warmed up in a café, drove a lot, and worked a bit. And ventured out for a quick walk to McKenzie Falls on the way.Lue lisää

    Countdown

    I woke up from a sound of windows crashing and metal shaking. Luckily that was just some stormy hail hitting the car - and not any worse than the parking lot (which we thought was a secluded place) was filled up with surfers' 4wd.
    After recharging and heating up indoor (again) we continued the drive, but didn't make it far. We really want to get out of this state, to look for better weather and legal night parking, but a stop just before the border to, yet again, get rid of all our fresh fruits and vegetabels, became a long one, and we stayed for the night. One of the last ones before getting indoor at night for some time.    Lue lisää

    Crossing the border

    Under a blue sky we cooked breakfast outside for a change, and following the sun (and occasional light showers) we finally crossed the border to a different state with a different time zone. And nicer weather.
    Here the fields are round, formed by their watering systems, and the forrests are exchanged by pine plantations.
    For a short distance we were back on Princes Hwy, which too us out of Sydney, and followed us all the way to Tasmania. Only difference is the fewer cities around it and the higher speed limits despite a narrow road.
    Although still in a cold wind, we made a stop at a sinkhole and a connected lake which both are formed by highly porous limestone, eventually collapses into these holes surrounded by dark, porous cliffs.    Lue lisää

    Kangaroo Island

    A morning way too early, and a drive way too long, still on Princes Hwy, past flat fields and short trees growing in sand, and at last a short ferry trip to Kangaroo Island. To small roads, even smaller towns or just the farms, and one city with a closed grocery store and expensive fuel. But finally we made it to that farm I didn't visit during Christmas. 250 ha of fields and trees and animals, dinner at a proper table with a nice family, a real bed, a warm shower.     Farm stay

    Dreaming about our own place we have spend quite some time clearing a former pine plantation from rocks and sticks and done weeding in two vegetable gardens while taking up all the knowledge we can get from winter in a farm.
    We are surrounded by nothing but Bill's land as far as we can see; in rare occasions a car passes by on the nearby gravel roads. Besides the horses and sheeps living on the farm, kangaroos, wallabies, enchidnas, possums and koalas make their appearance on a daily basis.    Lue lisää

    Stick picking

    When you want a bunfire in the garden but need a car to get there (!) It's a massive area, and today we had a well deserved rest woth barbecue and a good scotch (for me at least) after five loads of sticks with two new helpers. That meaning walking in front of Bill's tractor filling the front showel with rocks, pine roots and big sticks laying around after clearance of the pine tree plantation.
    In between we've gone a few times to the (!) town on this island to cross off some points of our rapidly growing list of internet demanding tasks.    Lue lisää

    Touring

    In the company of two French helpers and Bill as a tour guide we went around the island, having a break from squatting and getting pine roots off the ground. We started out at a marron farm with coffee with the owners followed by another of Bill's friends having kangaroos in the garden. Continuing on red gravel roads, high in iron content, and through endless natural plantations and not a single building we went into Flinders Range to see the "marvelous rocks" and fur seals on the rocks. Again some very different rock formations within very short distances, though it all starts to seem familiar.Lue lisää

    Getting ready for the road

    A second visit to the dentist (not for me) may cause bit of change of plans after the farm. But so far we're done with the stick picking; did another long half a day and lost track of load count. Last day with the French we learned-ish to shear sheeps before heading to the town (again) for a Skype call, and on our very last day we cleaned up the van and Bill helped us fixing the cooling system and changing oil, got ready for another round on the road.Lue lisää

    Vivonne Bay

    After a morning and early afternoon being creative, making rye bread for the trip, and getting plenty of tips for surviving and enjoying the long road trip ahead of us, we sayed goodbye to Bill, Tina and Anne and was back in the van. In a small, empty town in the middle of the island we gave up on refueling and refilling food storages for now and headed straight back to one of the stops from the tour with Bill. Back to falling asleep with the door open, listening to the ocean and the silent rain.
    To an early, rainy sunset we had a light dinner in the front seats of the car and crawled back to plan the drive west - starting when we're done with Kangaroo Island, back in the main land and pass by Adelaide.    Lue lisää

    Sunshine

    We followed the sun for a drive around the western part of the island, stopping at a honning factory, beaches and an old school on the way, having coffee at a lavender farm and finishing off by the end of a long gravel road for again to sleep by the ocean.     On our way to Adelaide

    After starting the day in a cafe, finally a place with a proper coffee size, followed by a ferry ride, we started making our way to Adelaide; passing by new beaches and red sand dunes on the way.
    And after a coffee break and nice sunset by the ocean we were back to spending the afternoon searching for a place to legally hide the car for the night.Lue lisää

    Going for the safe countryside

    After a tough day yesterday in the city, getting familiar with the walk between the hostel and the police station we skipped a second free night indoor and found a quiet street in the area of Adelaide Hills at night time, and woke up to a beautiful sky and a frozen windscreen. Still feeling home.
    Cups got replaced, and after successfully searching for an abandoned railway tunnel found on instagram, we parked far from civilization for coffee and computer time before sunset.    Lue lisää

    Perfect morning, beautiful colors behind Adelaide in the far distance, coffee in the blankets, and a late brekkie before heading back to the city for a big shopping and bit of social life.
    At nighttime we drove north and began the final round before a longer break from travelling; now having about 4000 km and some weeks ahead of us before reaching Perth.Lue lisää

    Camping

    The morning was freezing cold until the sun came out. Then summer was back for the day, making us get rid of all those layers on the first drive.
    Nico cooked lunch by the beach while I tried to get back to my assignment before testing my new toy. Which is definitely an upgrade!
    After another short drive we took our chances with a steep gravel road, best suitable for 4wd, and parked secluded by the ocean, having all afternoon to enjoy camping in the sun.    Lue lisää

    Australia's longest jetty

    The sun never came out, but wrapped in layers and gloves we eventually did the breakfast and several warm coffees - after our van almost too easily drove back up from our camping spot. Who needs a 4wd?
    We made it to Port Germein, a very small town with Australia's longest jetty, and did the walk all the way to the end, still wrapped in clothes.
    Leaning the lesson we brought the sleeping bag down from the roof for a third blanket for the night.    Lue lisää
