24 hours to go and we are off

    August 9 in Australia ⋅ 🌫 7 °C

24 hours until this adventure begins! And what better way to kick it off than giving blood lol, so much to do still. Haven’t even started packing 🙄😇😂😂

  • T’was the night before…..

    August 9 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 7 °C

T’was the night before travelling and all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a “Finnegan”.
Less than 12 hours before we take flight and head to the US & Canada.
If it’s not packed now, it won’t be. It’s snuck up on us like “WOW”.
Matching CFA deployment kit bags with fabulous bag tags from Uluru (Amanda ❤️).
Looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.
But what better way to ship us off than Pizza with Amanda, Alex and Emma on Friday night. Then celebrating Jett’s 60th on Saturday night.
All while Lachlan is at recruit course at Kapooka. His graduation will be here before we know it (3rd Oct).

To family and friends following along please add comments and stories. Even if it’s the footy or Rugby scores… give this adventure some global life and context.

  • What time is it????

    August 10 in Australia ⋅ 🌙 3 °C

We’ve made it to Melbourne airport in record time. Who would have thought Bell St would have been the fastest route. (The Eastern Freeway is closed at Doncaster Road)

Long term carpark was chockas but we found a spot close to the bus stop - winning… just remember we’re parked in C (for Connie) when we return.
Through check in & customs in minutes. Now sitting in the Qantas Business Lounge eating a hot breakfast with juice and coffee. Boarding is in 1.5 hours so we’ll kick back for a while and take it all in.

  • Blink & you’ll miss New Zealand

    August 10 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌬 11 °C

Transiting through Auckland was pretty uneventful, which is a fabulous thing. Gave us plenty of time to get a real coffee and head to the gate.
Last time I came through Auckland airport was transiting with Mum & Lachlan when we went to Canada & Alaska in 2019. It still looks the same.Read more

  • Auckland for a quick stop

    August 10 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 12 °C

Rush,Rush, Rush and wait is the order of the day here! Off on plane onto the next through transfers and then wait to board lol. It’s not too long a wait, just enough to visit the rest room and down a much needed coffee! Premium seats have improved since the last time we did this trip - very happy 😇😎🇦🇺🚒🏍️Read more

  • New York, New York

    August 10 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

We’ve made it into the USA… the customs rush baggage collection and Hotel checkin all happened pretty quick. The only thing above us is the roof top pool and the TWA “Connie” is just outside (and right a little lol) showers to freshen us up (20 hours in the farts of so many makes you smell - I’m told) then cocktails in the “Connie” before some dinner and the pool. The party has officially startedRead more

  • TWA - we made it.

    August 10 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

This place is so nostalgic - the photos do not do it justice. We will just take it all in and enjoy a bygone era.
The motel room overlooks the main TWA terminal. We can see the Constellation aircraft (Connie) she’s just off to the right. We’ll be having a drink or two in there.
The terminal has so many cute shops set up in the 1962 themes. Lots of information on the walls with all the stories. Original building plans. Mind blown with everything.
Swimming pool on the roof, we’ll be there later watching the planes retake off all while we enjoy a couple of cocktail.
What a way to start our US travels.

  • TWA Hotel

    August 11 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

More time spent wandering around the hotel this morning. Found the original design plans, displays of uniforms over the time, retro equipment , coke machine, even the lift had helpful information ….. including where to find me - LOL.
Everything was in perfect condition and cared for. Was like an oversized time capsule.

Interestingly, most flight crews are staying here as it’s the closet hotel to JFK.

    August 11 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Standing where it all began in 1982.
Mass 1 members do an amazing job at making everyone feel at home. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts for also remembering the members that have since departed. Sadly there are many names on the boards.
A 911 monument is part of the garden. Very respectively presented

We noticed they took the time to fly the Aussie flag…. Honoured & humbled.

The day starts with a sleep in and lazy start. A short stroll to an all you can eat breakfast… interesting selection. Henry & Marybelle head back to the motel and Roger and walk to Clifton Hill. Drop the postcards in the mailbox, let’s see if they get back to Australia before we do.
We wander down to the boat for the falls cruise, so pleased they have this process down to a fine art. Photos done ponchos on and we’re off….AMAZING. Mother Nature at her finest.

And I either didn’t need a shower this morning or I do need another one now!! Either way they tried to soak us under the falls as it literally rained on us the mist is so thick and the droplets so big. It’s safe to say, this is not the way into the USA LMAORead more

Fillet Mignon cook to perfection, dessert was amazing and the drinks were outstanding. We cannot rave enough about this place….
Thankfully we have accommodation close so we walked back to the motel. Now we’re sitting back relaxing waiting for the 10pm fireworks….. again 🥳

Found yet another gorgeous place to eat. (Pur & Simple Niagara Falls)
Final meal with Henry & Marybelle.

  • Detroit

    August 15 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

We’ve made it to Detroit but not before passing the turn off for Melbourne, London & Windsor. Remind me again which continent we’re on!!!!!!

The border crossing back into the USA was a very long wait in the queue, luckily only 2 minutes to get past the guard, then we were waived through the inspection point…. There were many unhappy people at the point when we drove past - sucks to be them.

We headed to Motown only to find out the days allotment of tickets had been sold, come back tomorrow was the suggestion… don’t worry, we’ll be the first in line at 9:30 sharp.

Off to Piquette Ave Ford Museum at the original plant. If only the walls could talk.
My grandfather Ernest Barling was a bodybuilder at the Ford Factory in Geelong Australia back in the 1930’s.

Lots of Model T’s, Trucks, machinery & car parts. Too many to take photos of but the most important one is the Fire Truck. Roger was a little stocked.

Off to our accommodation, The Inn on Ferry - Owen’s House. Stunning old buildings converted from a single home to rooms… glorious.
We’re on the 3rd floor, no lifts 😳
Roger’s suggestion of taking up only the bare essentials was a fabulous suggestion. We’ll be getting our steps up today.

  • Off to dinner at Shields

    August 15 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

It’s never a dull moment for the two of us….. short walk to the pizza joint has sirens going off. I wasn’t quick enough to zoom in but the cranks following us will get the jist.

Dinner at Shields was so much fun, we left before Karaoke started even though I’m sure we would have had a ball.

Dinner was a scrumptious bacon cheese beef burger for Roger and a Greek salad with chicken for me. Chased with a beer and cocktail.
