    Budapest

    Dec 15–17, 2024 in Hungary ⋅ ☁️ 3 °C

After a missed connecting flight from Munich, I snuck into our hotel room at 12:30am, trying not to disturb my "stranger" roommate (who I'll be rooming with for the next 8 nights). Turns out she is an Aussie girl from Wollongong and grew up in Orange, Jo Vanderstok. What are the chances?
In the morning I met everyone at breakfast and we started our tour of the European Christmas markets in this beautiful city. Walked over 19,000 steps today. Saw Christmas markets, churches, the Houses of Parliament (day and night), a very moving memorial of shoes by the Danube, ruin bars and the Jewish Quarter. Finished the evening with a beautiful meal at a cool restaurant with the members of our Intrepid tour group; 7 Aussies and 5 Americans and a terrific host from Croatia - Maare.

  • Graz Austria

    Dec 16–17, 2024 in Austria ⋅ ☁️ 9 °C

Travelled by train to Graz (about 6 hours). Austria’s second largest city has no less than 14 Christmas markets open over the holiday season. Started off with a visit to the main one at Hauptplatz square in front of the town hall. This is a beautiful town and we wandered around the beautiful old part of town!
Took funicular to top of the hill to see amazing view and clock tower.
Descended the hill via a “rollercoaster” slide. Speeds up to 25km/h. The highest underground slide in the world! 64 metres high and a great lot of unexpected fun.

  • Ljubljana

    Dec 17–19, 2024 in Slovenia ⋅ ☀️ 8 °C

Travelled by train to Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana (about 3.5 hours). Set amongst grand lakes and mountains. Love love love. That’s what Slovenia means. We love this little village!
A different vibe - spread out, maybe because it was bigger and set on the river, more classier or speciality markets, but beautiful. Castle on the hill... no slide this time !
    Beautiful streets and good vibes.

  • Lake Bled

    December 18, 2024 in Slovenia ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Oh my! One of the most beautiful days to explore this beautiful place. A little lake nestled in the valley surrounded by snow capped mountains and hosting a little island with the most gorgeous church.
We encouraged the group to wear Christmas colours and Sharon and Felicity embraced their gifts from me.
6 km round the lake walk was well worth it and I think we took a photo from every aspect!
“Scaled” the 130 m rock face to see the castle on top of cliff looking down over the lake. Wow!

  • Zagreb

    Dec 19–22, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Travelled to Zagreb this morning (about 2.5 hours by train). Nestled below Mt Medvednica, Croatia’s thriving capital is an exciting winter destination. A month-long Advent festival transforms the city into an illuminated winter wonderland, complete with acres of fairy-lights, huge Christmas trees, nativity scenes, temporary ice rinks, mulled wine stalls and igloo-shaped rakija (a potent local drop) bars. The Christmas market here is considered among the best in Europe. Arrived, dumped our bags and we were back out walking the streets. Maare took us to a traditional lunch and then an expert gave us a walking tour. We finished with a beautiful dinner at a very special restaurant.

  • Zicara Sljeme

    December 20, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 6 °C

Took in the panoramic view of Zagreb on the cable car ride to Sljeme, the summit of Medvednica mountain. Loved seeing the snow-covered sights on a short walk with Maare, before enjoying a traditional Croatian lunch. We feasted on local specialties like soup, meat stew or sarma (cabbage rolls stuffed with meat). It snowed while we were up there and the cable car ride was enjoyable, even cable car karaoke.
    Compulsory Christmas sweater day!

  • Plitvice lakes

    December 21, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 2 °C

Our last day in Croatia and last day of this amazing Christmas market tour. We said goodbye last night to our tour group and met a new tour guide this morning. Petra drove us to the beautiful Plitvice lakes... a wander through the snow cover tiered lakes was amazing. On the way home we stopped to look at the town of Rastoke where the river just ran through the town!
