We thought that the dude in Nikko was doing pretty well in the history stakes but he was out shone today by Kiyohira, the first lord of the Fujiwara clan. He built the Chūson-ji Temple in around 1100 and some of it is still in existence! Most impressive, as were the avenue of cedars that leads up to the Shrine. We could have spent more time there but we're pressed for time having thoroughly tested JR's Hiraizumi rail network and Google's knowledge of it!
