    Longreach

    Stayed at the Longreach Tourist Park. We planned to stay 2 nights. The night before we left we did the Kinnon & Co. Starlight Cruise. We were picked up by a bus and taken the the river for a cruise on the paddle steamer for nibbles, drinks and sunset. Afterwards we had a camp oven tea and a sound and light show on the life of Captain Stardust who was a notorious cattle thief, who stole from his employees and put his own mark on them and moved the mob from Longreach to the coast in South Australia. He nearly got away with it except for the big White Longhorn Bull which was one of his acquisitions. Which was not quite unoticable. He got caught, was trialled and he got off by a jury of his peers. Afterwards we had damper and then a Billy tea. This show all came about for the necessity for the family to diversify or loose the farm. One day the father and son were driving into Longreach and the son noticed all the caravans going past. He said to his father "Dad, if we could get a dollar from every caravaner going through, we would make a lot of money". That was how it cam to be.Read more
